Powell clocks 9.97 on his return

BELGRADE: World 100m record holder Asafa Powell got off to an impressive 2007 start on Tuesday when he won the sprint event in 9.97.

Powell, who suffered a knee injury in April, was quickest out of the blocks and led comfortably throughout the race to finish ahead of Churandy Martina of the Netherlands Antilles, who clocked 10.11, and Jamaican compatriot Michael Frater with 10.19.

Athletics: 'This is not a joy ride'
By : Devinder Singh

AFTER much persuasion, the National Sports Council has agreed to fund a month-long training-cum-competition stint to Europe and the 10 national track and field athletes involved have been warned not to spurn the opportunity.

National athletics chief coach Hanapiah Nasir said he would not hesitate to put any of the athletes on the first flight home if they do not pull their weight while in Europe.

"This is not a free ride to enjoy the scenery. I will be strict with them because they must show that they deserve to be in the squad. They must earn their stripes to represent the country," he said before leaving with the athletes for Sofia, Bulgaria on Wednesday.

Hanapiah added that the European-bound athletes are the cream of the lot in the country and he expected nothing but the best from them, beginning with the Vulpev-Bahchevanov International Permit Meeting in Plovdiv, Bulgaria tomorrow.

"They must perform and be disciplined at all times. I will not hesitate to put anyone on the first flight home if they fall out of line. If they think this is just a glorified training stint, they might as well train in Bukit Jalil," he said.

The Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) opted to send nine athletes to Bulgaria because the level of competition there was more suited to the standard of the Malaysians.

Roslinda Samsu, the 10th athlete, headed for Germany with her coach Gennady Potapovich for a series of high-level pole vault competitions.

MAAU vice-president Karim Ibrahim said the Bulgarian stint was the only option available to them because the entry deadlines for other meets had closed.

"They were able to accommodate us at short notice and we believe the competition there will be highly beneficial to the athletes," he said.

China expect gold from Liu Xiang in Osaka

BEIJING: Liu Xiang is confident of claiming the only major 110m hurdles title to have eluded him at this month's world championships but is likely to be the only Chinese to top the podium, China's head coach said.

Despite China's rise to sporting superpower status, athletics remains an Achilles heel and Feng Shuyong thinks the best haul his 57-strong team will bring back from the Osaka championships

Roslinda carries nation抯 hopes at world meet
By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu (pic) will be the only Malaysian flag-bearer in the World Championships beginning in Osaka on Saturday following the withdrawal of hurdler Noraseela Khalid because of a hamstring injury.

Noraseela also skipped the Asian Track and Field (ATF) Championships in Amman recently and she has still not recovered well enough to see action in Osaka.

And Roslinda, who has qualified for the Beijing Olympics next year under Category B, has set her sights on making an impression in her first appearance in the championships.

She wants to meet the Category A qualifying mark of 4.45m. She earned an Olympic berth with a 4.30m effort, which won her a gold in the Kazakhstan Open in June. Roslinda抯 national record stands at 4.40m.

揑 hope to go one better and meet the Category A mark for the Olympics. First, I have to make the top 12 final. Competition will be stiff but if I can get into the final, I have a shot at getting over 4.45m,

Athletics / World championships: POWELL-GAY SHOWDOWN

http://www.nst.com.my/Friday/Sport/20070824074408/insidepix1
Asafa Powell co-holder of the 100m world record (LEFT).
Tyson Gay clocked the fastest 100m time this year.

ASAFA Powell and Tyson Gay are quiet guys.

So leave it to one of the best talkers in the sport抯 history to sum up the anticipated sprint showdown between the two at the World Championships.

The winner, Jon Drummond declared, will be "The Man in Japan."

The now-retired Drummond has a vested interest. Gay credits Drummond with helping him become this year抯 fastest human, if not quite the world record holder yet. That could change on the ultra-fast track at Nagai Stadium, where the Championships begin a nine-day run tomorrow.

"This is what everyone has waited for," Gay said yesterday.

Powell enters the competition as co-holder of the world record but the Jamaican never has won a medal in an Olympics or a World Championships. Neither has Gay, who emerged this season as successor to the banished Justin Gatlin as the undisputed leader of the ever-fast American sprint corps.

Powell shares the world mark of 9.77 seconds with Gatlin, who is expected to be stripped of the record once an arbitration panel rules on just how long his doping suspension will be.

Gay, though, is literally on Powell抯 heels. He ran the fastest 100 this year

Gay rampas mahkota 100m

揔etika bermula, saya melakukan banyak kesilapan. Saya agak gopoh dan tidak mendapat rentak larian yang saya mahukan, tetapi saya tetap berpuas hati dengan gangsa,

Kenya-born runner wins 1,500m for adopted country

A 99-year-old ghost was laid to rest by Bernard Lagat yesterday when he achieved what no American man has managed in almost a century by winning a global 1,500 metres title.

Never mind that Lagat was Kenya-born, he dabbed his eyes and placed his right hand over his heart as the Star-Spangled Banner blared over the Nagai stadium sound system to herald his feat at the 11th world championships.

The US had not boasted a men's 1,500m champion in a global event since Melvin Sheppard won the 1908 Olympics in London.

揑've never been happier than this,
