Brunei's Aceh Mission

Bandar Seri Begawan - Twenty two personnel from the Brunei Darussalam Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) have been awarded the "Satyalancana Dharma Nusa" medal by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr H Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, in recognition of the successful accomplishment of their mission.
Brunei Darussalam's AMM team who participated in the mission from September 5 to September 15 2005, accomplished its mission through the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Helsinki, Finland in August 2005, comprising 14 Royal Brunei Armed Force officers and eight Royal Brunei Police Officers. Presenting the honorary medals to the 22 personnel at an Award Presentation ceremony held at the Pahlawan Hall in Berakas Garrison was the guest of honour, the Commander of RBAF Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General Dato Paduka Seri Hj Awg Halbi Hj Md Yussof.
Also in attendance to witness the presentation were Commissioner of Police Pehin Datu Kerma Setia CP Dato Paduka Seri Zainuddin Jalani, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence Dato Paduka Mustappa Hj Sirat, Deputy Permanent Secretaries at MINDEF and the Ambassador of the Republic of -Indonesia to Brunei Darussalam Mr Herijanto Soeprapto.
The Commander in his speech prior to presenting the medals highlighted that in the Defence White Paper and RBAF Strategic Plans issued in 2004 amongst all, underlines the force's desire to explore new dimensions, roles and responsibilities, to get involved in its pure efforts particularly those sponsored by United Nations before the end of the first decade - a new decade of the 21st century and to execute specific preparations and planning on it.
The climate changes, politics and national disaster that have troubled the Asean region have provided RBAF the opportunity, despite the lack of wider experience and their limitations from the point of equipment and human resources, to lending a hand to Nagroe Aceh Darussalam, Indonesia.
He further disclosed that the honorary "Satyalancana Dharma Nusa" medal was a medal of recognition given to armies of Indonesian National Armed Forces, Republic of Indonesia Police Force and civilian officers, who have accomplished the relief peace operation duties in threatened areas in order to keep the sovereignty and unity of Indonesia.

The AMM Team receiving the honorary medal "Satyalancana Dharma Nusa" is an honour especially -in recognition towards responsibilities shouldered towards the achievement of permanent peace in Aceh.
For Brunei Darussalam's AMM Team, receiving it apart from the honour and additional recognition gained previously as well as the appreciation, is more meaningful as it has upgraded the nation's profile and defence institution and its security in level with other world members that is bigger, more experienced and capable.
Yesterday's ceremony also saw the attendance of Service Commanders and Commandants, Military and Civilian Directors, RBAF Senior Officers and Indonesian Defence Advisor to Brunei Darussalam.
The responsibilities of the AMM amongst others are to monitor the demobilisation of GAM and decommissioning of weapons, monitoring Indonesian non-organic military and police relocation, reintegration of GAM members who are active in the community, Human Rights situation and provide assistance in this field and so forth. With the mission successfully accomplished, it has given space to the formation of AMM with a minimal number of members. Most Bruneians Opt To Marry Late

Bandar Seri Begawan - More and more Bruneians, especially women, are now rather reluctant to tie the knot in their youth.
Keen to improve their economy and knowledge first in this 215' century, they are found to marry earliest in their late 20s.
Family law expert Datin Dr Hjh Sa'adiah making this observation said that the tender ages between 15 to 19 is certainly not popular here as an age of `settling down'. It has moved to the late twenties. It's now between the ages of 25 to 29 that men and women of Brunei start looking at matrimony.
Their priorities in life have changed and youngsters seek a firm footing especially in the economic and education areas before thinking of getting married.
Late marriage has become an accepted norm. Statistics revealed that five couples below the age of 15 years marred in 2005 with 286 couples aged between 15-19 years old. However, the most popular age for marriage has proven to be between 25-29 years with 1,369 couples, compared to 20-24 years old of which 1,225 couples tied the knot. 528 couples between the ages of 30-34 years old also entered matrimony.
"It cannot be denied that economy, family pressure, culture and education have influenced teenagers to settle early," said Datin Dr Hjh Sa'adiah, family law expert and a senior lecturer at the Academy of Brunei Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam to the Weekend.
She added families facing economic hardships especially with many dependents would pressure their children to get married early with the hope that the parents face a lesser burden.
For some teenagers hailing from broken families, early marriage seems to be the ideal way to get out of the pressure of coping alone.
Meanwhile on the cultural front, it is undeniable that a community, which thinks highly of tradition, may think, even with the highest academic qualifications, a woman belongs in the kitchen. Those with such perceptions also let their woman folk marry early.
Parents would try to find a life partner for their daughter on reaching adulthood to avoid being called old maids, besides the perception of some parents wanting their children to get married early to start their own family and to eagerly await the birth of their grandchildren.
Parents would also be proud if more children are born. This occurs in a community that still highly regards old tradition and influence of the family's educational background. Education is considered a basic factor that gives rise to other factors. Low educational background will lead teenagers into needing to settle down earlier than expected.
This is further mooted by what has been inherited by their parents for generations. When parents settle down early, it affects their children. By not being aware of the challenges faced by married couples, teenagers' view marriage as the right pathway for them.
This should not be a problem forr those with a sound and firm financial background. The implication would be great and obvious for teenagers who are not with early impulsive marriages leading them to divorce, misunderstandings, quarrels and so on. Religion is crucial as a platform in building a family. Parents, who emphasise religion as a way of life, are found to support early matrimony for their offspring to avoid complicated relationships or even incest.
Datin Dr Hjh Saadiah sees early marriages having two big implications. "In a positive way, it could avoid them from being dragged to dire consequences as they would try more to uphold faith, morals and the good name of the family, as well as train to be responsible."
"On the negative side, early marriages may create disharmony in the family and break up the union of young married couples who are not ready to shoulder the responsibility that comes with marriage. It would give an impact on their mental preparation, economy and environment, and consequently lead to the disintegration of family," she said.
Asked of the stigma among the Malay community for sinister jibes like `old maid', she said in this modem community, such claims are taken less seriously as society nowadays emphasises more on development, education and career that could guarantee the future of the woman until some consider marriage as less important.

Bandar Seri Begawan - Following Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd's transition of its helicopter fleet from Sikorsky S61N to the Sikorsky S92A, it has chosen SkyTrac System to provide flight following and SATCOM for its latest helicopter fleet.
Rotorhub.com website reported that in addition to the SkyTrac propriety software, BSP will also utilise the latest SkyWeb product which allows any host computer with Internet access to securely display flight following data.
The President and CEO of SkyTrac Systems said that BSP came to them with unique requirements in regards to their corporate networking environment wh ich they (SkyTrac) were able to provide the solutions.
Captain Stephen A Fincken, Helicopter Fleet Replacement Project Leader from BSP meanwhile highlighted the importance of finding a one-stop solution without compromising BSP's stringent computer security policies.
"SkyTrac was willing to provide us a global, turnkey solution. They also worked closely with our installer to ensure a reliable hardware environment," he added.
The three new BSP's Sikorsky S92A helicopters were unveiled in March this year. It accommodates 16 people and comes fitted with an array of vastly enhanced safety features, such as the Terrain Avoidance Warning and Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems.
It also incorporates lightning sensing and flight management systems normally seen in larger airline aircraft.
BSP this week has opened up a tender for the sale of three S61N helicopters built in the mid-70s.
In November 1967, BSP took delivery of the Sikorsky S61N, which was the most advanced, large civilian helicopter in production at that time. This year has marked the 40th year of operations using S61N helicopters.
Several more S6lNs were added to its fleet over the next two decades and by 1992, BSP has expanded its helicopter fleet strength-to six S61NS and one SA-365 Dauphin.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin Imams Turn Spotlight On Cable Thefts, Vandalism

Bandar Seri Begawan - Rampant cable thefts and acts of vandalism that have caused considerable discomfort to the public and massive losses to the government came under the limelight by the religious authorities yesterday.
Referring to the recent major power blackout affecting the Brunei-Muara and Tutong Districts that was caused by electrical cable thefts, Imams in the nationwide Friday sermon said, "Stealing is a sin and shows that the person is not pious".
"Sins and vice matters should not be taken lightly as any acts that we carry out would receive dire punishment in the hereafter. And that punishment could occur at anytime and any place without us even realising it," the Imams said. "Among the acts of vice and other sins that have occurred and are rampant nowadays are adultery, indecent social acts, theft, misuse of drugs and frauds. And of late, we find that the act of vandalising public and government property such as phone booths, public toilets, signboards and bus stands is becoming more rampant. Worst of all are thefts of items including road signs, grills, doors and other metal parts for the purpose of selling to the junkyard or recycling firms," the Imams added in their sermon.
"The nation was recently hit by a massive power cut caused by the electrical thefts, resulting in power supply disruptions in 60 per cent of the areas in the Brunei-Muara and Tutong Districts and causing the government to incur losses mounting to some B$50,000."
The Imams also cited previous theft cases involving telephone cables that resulted in discomfort to the public where phone lines were `out of service' for long periods of time. Cable theft is a punishable offence that carries an imprisonment term ranging from three to seven years, or a fine, or both.
"There are various ways to curb the theft activities from aggravating such as instilling religious knowledge, discipline, civic awareness and good values. The role of parent is crucial in shaping a harmonious family and establishing a society with good norms and highly disciplined. Parents should set a good example to the children.
"Scrutiny by the enforcement officers at deserted areas should be heightened by conducting patrols while the society should not be ignorant when they come across suspicious acts and to report them to the authorities. Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Premium Halal Brand is an initiative by His Majesty's Government that aims to contribute towards efforts by other Muslim nations to ensure that foods consumed by the Muslim Ummah are halal.
This was stated by Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, as he was sharing his views in the Panel Discussion at Session 5 on the topic of "Halal and the Muslim World" during the 41 Malaysian International Halal Showcase (MINAS 2007).
Dato Hj Hamid's views on the approach that Brunei has taken to participate in the Global Halal Market were shared with at least 900 participants from 40 countries at the forum. The Permanent Secretary is leading a delegation consisting of senior officers from the Department of Agriculture and other divisions of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources to promote the Brunei Premium Halal Brand Project and the upcoming 2'' Brunei International Halal Products Expo (IHPExpo) that is scheduled to take place August 16-19, 2007 in conjunction with His Majesty's 61st Birthday celebrations.

Of course lah, time change and most girls wants to finish their studies first and secured their own careers 1st. Furthermore most girls are now free to chose who they want to marry unlike those days when they were asked to get married earlier even before they finish their studies.
Seriously though the girls gets married a bit late because there are just not enough suitable men around. Statistically for the last 5 years or so, after finishing O levels, there are 66% girls and 34% boys continued to do their A levels studies. The same ratios go on to study at UBD. So girls, believe or not once you reach these levels, there are just not enough men to chose from.:)
