Freeze your hard drive to recover data: Myth or reality?

About 2 weeks ago, I wrote an article about hard disk recovery that was quite popular (I received approximately 20000 hits for it). The article covered a couple of solutions to help you in the case where your hard drive would stop working. While I was doing some research for this article, I ended up on a few stories about people who were putting their HD in the freezer to help fix it long enough to be able to recover their data. I guess that by doing this, some metal parts in the HD could contract, putting back in place defective parts, and making everything work again for a few minutes.

What do you guys think? Myth or reality? It seems that a lot of people agree that this solution actually works, so I decided to test it myself with an old Maxtor hard drive that failed me a couple of weeks ago. There was no important data on there, so losing the disk didn't really bother me.

Before putting it in the freezer, the drive was making a weird clicking noise, and the computer was showing me this message: Primary hard drive 0 not found, strike F1 to retry boot, F2 to run the setup utility

I removed the hard disk from the computer and sealed it in a ziplock bag to prevent condensation.

After this, I shoved it in the freezer, and waited an hour.

I finally installed it back in the computer, closed the case, and pushed on the power button.

YES! it works, the computer is starting correctly! Unfortunately, after I logged in, Windows froze and I wasn't able to do anything. I tried rebooting, and....

Well, at least the hard disk spun for about 2 minutes before crashing again. Maybe that's not long enough to let me recover any data, but it worked for a little while. :)

edit: The day after, I shoved the hard drive back in the freezer for 24 hours. After getting it out, I was able to get 20 more minutes of life out it.

If you don't want to risk losing you data and are afraid to try this out, you can always ask experts to do the job for you. The folks at DTIData or at the Hard Drive Recovery Group can probably help you get your data back, no matter how damaged your drive is. Here are the specific pages on their sites concerning hard drive data recovery solutions:
DTI Data Recovery
Hard Drive Recovery Group

And in the end, if you cannot do anything, get a new hard drive.

sempat la kalau nak buat back up data yang penting

kalo ia mnjadi bagus la.. wpun dpt idupkan dlm sejam dua..

erm.. agak2 kn. apa pnjelasan dr segi fizik dlm hal ni. hee

Yep, although this is an old trick...  Not a myth, although this measure only apply to some cases where motor/mechanical parts inside the HDD got stuck, ie the klick klock sound....   As said, the ziplock bag is a must to avoid any condensation to settle in inside the HDD.

The metal parts inside, hopefully, will shrink a bit just enough to loosen it up.  Just enough time for quick retrieval of important data....  I tried this a few years ago, with somewhat "dead" HDD with really weird sounds.  I managed to access the HDD and copy out a file (nothing important) before the HDD making that weird sounds again & went kaput....  It was just a test anyway with a HDD that was intended to be opened up & made to be a display piece.....  :D

hehe, bgus ar kalo smpat utk backup data.. mybe ia bole dipraktik utk pendrive? hee

Sampai skrang masih leh guna...huhuhuhu

tak boleh..
pendrive guna memory IC/ram
hardisk guna disk..

tak sama;P

Yep, freezing the HDD is used for stuck mechanical & rotor functions of the internals. Tu yg bunyi kok, kreet etc tu.... So, pendrive ni masuk kat dalam liquid nitrogen pun tak guna punya....

salam semua....mengenai kenyataan di atas..memang terdapat kebenarannya....last month...sebijik hardisk aku WD 160 GB (SATA) aku tak blh detect...dah lah hd tuh aku jadikan master...aku cuba masukkan dlm CPU lain pon tak leh detect..ada kawan aku ckp cuba letak dlm freezer peti ais..tp kena bungkus elok2 la...aku letak dlm freezer tuh lbh kurang 3-4 jam, biar btul2 sejuk...pasu kuarkan HD tuh, biarka ianya kering elok2 pastu baru pasang semula kat PC tuh..alhamdulillah...PC aku dpt detect semula HD tuh....sampai skrg msh blh guna....

Aku tak berapa percaya kaedah nih berkesan.

2-3 bulan lepas aku order satu 320GB HDD.

So aku try ler simpan berapa jam boh dlm freezer selepas dilapik dgn plastik dan suratkabar. Lepas kat 4-5 jam aku try....Hmpptt tak boleh gak. Simpan satu hari lak dlm freezer lagi tak boleh gak. Aku pikir2, aku teringat kaedah Microsoft X-Box 3ROD ( ring of death ) iaitu dgn cara balut dgn towel kering selama berapa jam. Aku pun try kaedah nih. Hampeh mmg tak boleh pun. Kalau HDD yg rosak nih harapan nak pulih semula mmg tipis.

Moral of the story : selalu buat back-up, kalau ada data atau gambaq yg penting simpan dalam G-mail. Senang mana2 pun boleh ekses.Habis punah aku pun movie torrent yg aku download berjam2 tu :funk:

tengok nature kerosakkan gak, yg nie cuma berkesan untuk mechancil part yg terstuck, tapi kalau yang dah patah, hang simpan kat kutub utara 10000 tahun pun memang tak baik punya:lol:
