PD Hwang In Roi talks about Hyun Joong
Korean singer and actor Kim Hyun-joong has been confirmed as the male lead in upcoming TV series “Mischievous Kiss” based on popular Japanese comic “Itazura na Kiss”, according to agency KEYEAST on Friday.
KEYEAST announced in a press release that Kim has been cast for the role of Baek Sung-jo, the all-around Mr. Perfect-type character who ends up falling in love with a girl always getting into trouble, to be played by actress Jeong So-min.
Director Hwang In-roi, who will helm the new series, explained that it was a combination of Kim’s looks which “seem like they just popped out of a comic book”, and his “pure, flexible” personality that made him perfect to play the character.
“And his strong will to win, which is one of the necessary virtues that an actor must have to lead a mini-series, was also a big factor”, the director went onto say. “I think you may well look forward to Kim’s natural appearance and relaxed acting in the drama”.
The original comic series “Itazura na Kiss”, which sold over 27 million copies in Japan, has been made into animation in Japan and a top-rated television drama in Taiwan.
Hwang, who previously directed “Princess Hours” (MBC, 2006) and “Iljimae Returns – Moon River” (MBC, 2009), will team with noted television writer Ko Eun-nim for the small screen adaptation of the comic.
Production company Group 8, creators behind last year’s smash hit series “Boys over Flowers”, will produce the new show.
The romantic comedy, which starts shooting this month, will premiere on MBC on September 1.

Jung So-min cast as lead in Playful Kiss

Well, she’s no Park Bo-young, but of all the possible names in contention to lead Playful Kiss, new actress Jung So-min is my favorite choice. It’s being reported that she is the final choice for the lead role opposite Kim Hyun-joong (and let’s hope that after all the hoopla surrounding casting rumors, this one finally sticks).
Jung has some CF work to her credit, but the currently airing Bad Guy is her first screen credit. Despite her relative inexperience, she has been the recipient of a lot of praise for her acting in that drama. In fact, immediately after the drama premiered, there was a wave of press about her predicting that she was poised to become a star. (Read more about her in a recent interview.)
In Bad Guy, Jung plays the youngest daughter to a super-rich chaebol family, who is used as a pawn in Kim Nam-gil’s revenge.
The character of Mo-nae is at times sweet and other times bratty, but Jung brings a lovely presence to what could easily be an infuriating character. (I understand some find Mo-nae annoying, but I love her. I even love her when she’s being a spoiled brat, which is just so appropriate for her role, and her adolescent dramatics make me laugh.)
She has also been called a “Little Yoon Eun-hye” because of her facial resemblance to the star, although I find the comparison only really works if you look at the bottom half of her face. In any case, Jung has shown that she can effectively act both flighty and earnest and, most appealingly, is very natural in her acting. I look forward to watching her career develop (and predict it’ll skyrocket after Kiss).
Playful Kiss follows Road No. 1 on MBC and premieres on September 1.

Lee Tae Sung confirmed in Playful Kiss

They didn’t make us wait on this one long, did they? Lee Tae-sung, recently announced as frontrunner announced as frontrunner, is onboard with Playful Kiss.
He’ll be Kim Hyun-joong’s rival for the girl (played by Jung So-min), showing unfailing devotion whereas the hero, well, doesn’t. Lee’s character Jun-gu is based on the manga’s Kinnosuke, and hails from Gyeongsang-do in the south. (Historically, there has been prejudice against southerners by Seoulites, who consider themselves more urbane than the countrified masses. This Jun-gu character seems cast in that mold as “a character with the energy of a Gyeongsang youth and a tough appeal.”)
Playful Kiss is set for a September 1 premiere.
