Tottenham winger Gareth Bale & Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers named Barclays Player & Manager of the Month

The Spurs winger has scored three times for the north London side, while the Swans coach guided the club to wins over Aston Villa & Arsenal and held Chelsea to a draw.

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale and Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers have been named Player & Manager of the Month respectively for January.

The Spurs winger scored three times and bagged two assists to claim the player award, including a stunning strike at Manchester City in the north London club’s 3-2 defeat against the league leaders.

The Wales international – who has been attracting increased attention from across the globe for his mesmerising performances on the left flank – also scored a brace in the Lilywhites’ 3-1 victory over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers has helped continue the Swans’ impressive first season in the Premier League, guiding the Welsh club to two wins and a draw in their January top-flight matches.

The eye-catching side also overcame Arsenal in an enthralling 3-2 victory at Liberty Stadium before drawing 1-1 with Chelsea at the end of the month, a match that could easily have ended in a Swansea win.

The Swans' only loss in the league came at the hands of Sunderland, who have been in remarkable form since Martin O’Neill told over in December.

Tottenham 5-0 Newcastle: Louis Saha & Emmanuel Adebayor lead Harry Redknapp's Spurs to stunning victoryThe Magpies will rue a match they never had a chance of playing their way into as Spurs blew their hosts away in a brilliant first half-hour

A breathtaking opening half-hour marked by four assists from the invigorated Emmanuel Adebayor propelled Harry Redknapp's Tottenham to a 5-0 victory over Newcastle.

It was a week full of worry for everyone involved at Tottenham, but the demolition of Alan Pardew's side at White Hart Lane on Saturday will ease that anxiety.

Adebayor walked off the pitch the star man, scoring one and providing four assists for Louis Saha, who bagged a home debut brace, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Niko Kranjcar.

It took just three minutes for Spurs to find their rhythm as Adebayor surged into the box and played a great one-two with Niko Kranjcar to find himself closing in on goal.

His low cross found it's way beyond Tim Krul to the onrushing Assou-Ekotto to slide into an empty net.

Barely two minutes later Adebayor again got the better of Coloccini and sent a superb teasing ball across the box from the right touchline. Arriving right on cue was Saha to superbly tuck away his first goal for the club, leaving Krul no chance from six yards.

The positive mood at White Hart Lane was exemplified by the home fans who were intent to voice their dissatisfaction at the prospect of Redknapp leaving the club for the England national team role.

Chants of “Harry Redknapp - we want you to stay” were interrupted by scenes of celebration as the home team tormented their visitors in the opening 20 minutes, surging to a 3-0 lead.

Assou-Ekotto's pass down the left channel to Luka Modric opened Newcastle's once more and the midfielder fired a low cross into the feet of Adebayor.

The Togolese striker, not content with a brace of assists, cushioned the ball into Saha's path for the Frenchman to double his tally and move Spurs into a commanding position.

Alan Pardew's side did eventually get their house in order. Newcastle won a free kick in their attempt to claw a way back into the game and after Scott Parker was booked for a foul on the edge of his box, Demba Ba lashed his shot just wide of Brad Friedel's left-hand post.

But just as the Magpies looked to be gaining a foothold in the match, Spurs struck again.

Luka Modric won the ball off Danny Guthrie and launched another attack, sliding the ball left to Saha who rolled it into Adebayor as Bale ran past the recovering Newcastle back-line.

Adebayor had his shot saved by the legs of Krul. The rebound though, dropped to the onrushing Kranjcar to slot past Krul and into the net.

Half an hour of football had been played and Spurs were 4-0 to the good.

Newcastle continued to carry disappointingly little threat and looked happier to deal with Pardew's half-time dressing down than the rampant Tottenham attack.

That was justified on the hour mark as Spurs added to the four they scored in the first half as their two strikers linked up once again. This time, Saha returned the favour to Adebayor.

Assou-Ekotto's deep cross was headed back across the box by Saha to the unplayableAdebayor to volley the ball past Krul.

The assist added to his two goals and was a suitable end to Saha's involvement – he was subbed minutes later to a fantastic ovation.

Predictably the game took on a more languid pace after the fifth goal. The disappointing forward line of Papiss Cisse and Ba never found it's rhythm and the former was subbed for Dan Gosling as Pardew clearly looked to restrict the loss to just five goals.

That said, Gosling was guilty of missing an open goal with 15 minutes to play, flicking the ball over the bar following Friedel's excellent point blank save from Ba's header.

Spurs remained persistent in their hunt for further goals and Modric was unlucky with a drive from distance that stung the fingertips of Krul.

To Pardew's relief, the scoreline remained 5-0, but on reflection he will look at this game and wonder where it went wrong.

His team barely had time to rev their engines before they were behind and as Roberto Martinez will recall from the 9-1 thrashing they received at White Hart Lane two years ago, once Spurs build a head of steam, they are liable to steam-roll any opposition.

For Tottenham and Redknapp, this game will provide more questions than answers. Performances like this do reinforce the suggestion that this is potentially a title-winning side. It may not be this season, but the home fans know – and said so through song – that with Redknapp at the helm, anything is possible.

Hazard dedah hajat sertai Spurs

2012/02/15

– Agensi

Everton 1-0 Tottenham: Jelavic opens his Toffees account to hand Redknapp a third successive league defeat.

The big-money January signing netted confidently in his first start under David Moyes to give his new team their third consecutive league victory at Goodison Park.

David Moyes celebrated ten years in charge of Everton by adding to the recent scalps ofManchester City and Chelsea with a victory over Tottenham thanks to Nikica Jelavic's first-half strike.

Jelavic's goal in the 22nd minute set Everton on their way to a victory, condemning Tottenham to their third consecutive Premier League defeat under Harry Redknapp as concerns over their top-four credentials continue to grow.

Following his substitute appearance at QPR, Jelavic was handed his first start by Moyes as he replaced Denis Stracqualursi as the lone frontman whilst Steven Pienaar missed out due to his loan agreement with Tottenham.

The visitors welcomed Scott Parker and Gareth Bale back to the line-up having missed the Premier League loss to Manchester United and Ledley King stepped into the breach in place of the injured Michael Dawson.

Louis Saha made the bench despite suggestions of a gentleman's agreement between the Redknapp and Moyes which would have prevented him featuring, as Jermain Defoe led the line with Emmanuel Adebayor.

The match started at a timid pace and it wasn't until the 15th minute that a genuine chance was created. Defoe broke the Everton offside trap and collected a through ball with Johnny Heitinga in pursuit.

After getting into the box, Defoe looked to fire a left-footed shot on goal but was denied by the recovering Dutchman's lunge. An aggrieved Defoe looked for a penalty but referee Mark Halsey deemed the defender's tackle legal.

This sparked the home team into life and Marouane Fellaini's left-footed volley from a wide angle was saved by the outstretched leg of Brad Friedel minutes later.

As Tottenham struggled to deal with the movement of the midfield five Moyes deployed, Leighton Baines found Leon Osman running from deep on the left side of the box.

Osman latched onto the pass and nipped in and past an overly aggressive Younes Kaboul before pulling the ball back for striker Jelavic, and Everton's January signing showed impressive composure to side-foot his effort beyond Friedel from the edge of the box and mark his first start with his first goal.

The reaction from the away side lacked urgency and besides a couple of long-range strikes from Bale, Tim Howard was hardly troubled by the half-hour mark.

Friedel, in contrast, had to make a low stop from a deflected Royston Drenthe effort and a sprawling parry from a Jelavic free-kick.

Redknapp opted to revert Bale to his natural left-wing role after starting from the right flank and Spurs began to see an improvement but chances created were slim and Everton were content to deny their visitors the space to find rhythm in possession.

Spurs opted to stick with the same starting eleven as they emerged for the second-half and they showed renewed vigour as Defoe found space on the left of the box for Parker's pass.

His jink inside and right-footed shot tested Howard but the American's save was routine as he beat the ball away for a corner.

Tottenham's first substitution saw Saha replace Adebayor ten minutes after half-time as the visitors continued to control possession in search of a way back into the game.

Bale's cross-field ball to Benoit Assou-Ekotto set Spurs in motion again and the French full-back's volleyed pass found Luka Modric just inside the box but the Croatian got under his snapshot and failed to trouble Howard.

Everton, in truth mustered little of note by the 65th minute and only the introduction of Jack Rodwell stemmed the flow of Spurs attacks.

Rafael van der Vaart replaced Sandro with 20 minutes to go but immediately Spurs had to deal with a rare Everton attack. Osman was played in on goal on the right of the box but his drive was too central and saved by Friedel.

Five minutes after Van der Vaart's introduction, Spurs thought they were level. Assou-Ekotto's cross found it's way to the back-post with Bale arriving.

As the ball jumped up and struck Bale on the chest, it fell to Defoe who turned it past Howard. Unfortunately for the striker, he had wandered a yard offside making the decision to disallow the strike correct.

For all Tottenham's second-half possession, Everton have been bred by Moyes to hold onto leads such as this. Adding Phil Jagielka to an already sturdy back-line reinforced the hosts resilience.

The final chance of the match fell to the visitors as Van der Vaart's deflected shot nestled on the roof of Howard's net and when the resulting corner was played short to Assou-Ekotto whose shot squirmed to Saha.

The Frenchman's attempt as he lost balance wrong-footed Howard but the ball struck the foot of the post and away to safety.

The Toffees have found their stride as they so often do in the second period of the season and move into ninth place but for Spurs, they will be looking even more anxiously over their shoulder as Arsenal and Chelsea continue to gather points.

Chelsea vs Tottenham Player Ratings

Tottenham maintained their five-point lead over Chelsea in the Premier League with an action-packed 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Spurs produced arguably their most disciplined away performance of the season to stay five points clear of the fifth-placed Blues, who now face an uphill battle to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Juan Mata came closest for the hosts in the second half, curling a free-kick onto the upright with Brad Friedel rooted to the spot.

However, Spurs had perhaps the best of the chances, with blocks on the line from Rafael van der Vaart and Emmanuel Adebayor, and a Gareth Bale header off their bar their biggest openings.

Tottenham
Brad Friedel - 6
He was gifted the clean sheet by Chelsea's profligacy more than his own efforts. In other words, the usual line of 'hardly bothered by the opponents' attack' applies.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto - 6.5
Always having the threat of Ramires and Sturridge drifting into space, Assou-Ekotto still somehow managed to find time to join up in the attack. Even then, he seems to have the urge to shoot whenever he gets the ball on the attack despite being closely marked. Needless to say, he didn't have an impact up front.

Younes Kaboul - 5
It's no wonder Tottenham are unable to beat Stoke this season - just look at how their defenders deal with long balls into the box! Kabould must have missed four such crosses in but luckily for him, the profligacy of the Chelsea strikers spared Tottenham the Blues (pardon the pun).

William Gallas - 5
Same as Kaboul, Gallas can't seem to get it right when the ball is off the ground, easily being nudged off while challenging for headers.

Kyle Walker - 7
This lad seems to have endless stamina, bursting down the flanks even on the slightest chance of attack and still managing to cover his flank. Full marks for his effort.

Gareth Bale - 6.5
His one-leggedness is going to cost him someday - it was clear that he was always looking to go with his left foot whenever he had the ball. Even then, he hit the bar once with a header from a corner kick and his cutting down the middle provided some of Tottenham's better moments.

Scott Parker - 7.5
Parker was everywhere in the match - everywhere, I say. He's spotted chasing back and making the crucial clearance on a Chelsea counter-attack, he's spotted everywhere in midfield asking for the ball and providing an outlet for his team mates and he seems to be always around Chelsea players in the midfield with a handy tackle.

Sandro (Off 75') - 4
He brings the physical edge to Spurs but has nothing much else to contribute. An example would be when he karate-kicked a pass in the midfield under no pressure into Chelsea’s defence. Another when he was booked for a needless sliding challenge into Essien.

Luka Modric - 6
Played deep and hardly had any chances to utilise his set-up play. He did have a chance and times a perfect ball for Adebayor, only for the striker's shot to be cleared off the line by Cahill.

Rafael Van der Vaart (Off 75') - 6.5
He was the main outlet for Tottenham's attack in the first half and had a brilliant chance to put them ahead, only to direct his shot straight at Cech and have his second shot cleared off by Cole. Did well to brign the ball into the final third of the pitch and link up with Adebayor.

Emmanuel Abebayor - 7.5
Displayed speed that belied his lanky frame and was always troubling the Chelsea defenders when he had the ball in the Blues' half. An outstanding example of how to lead the line in a difficult away fixture. Held the ball up well with his back to goal and carried it forwards with power and urgency.

Substitutes
Louis Saha (On 75') - N/A
Jake Livermore (On 75') - N/A

Player Ratings: Tottenham 3-1 Swansea

Emmanuel Adebayor at the double as Spurs finally get back to winning ways in the Premier League despite good performance from the swans, spearheaded by Gylfi Sigurdsson

Tottenham
Brad Friedel   7.0

The 41-year-old made a stunning save at full-stretch to deny Sigurdsson but could do nothing about the Icelandic attacker's next effort.

Younes Kaboul3   7.5
A powerful, commanding display from the centre-back as he bullied Graham and made some powerful challenges. Also good on the ball when he ventured forward.

William Gallas   7.0
Used all his experience to marshal the defence. Clever decision making and seemed to have an excellent understanding with Kaboul.

Kyle Walker   6.0
The England international had an entertaining battle with Sinclair, who he kept quiet with some solid defending. Provided a good outlet in attack but not at his best on the ball. Was perhaps fortunate that Taylor reacted sensibly when the former Sheffield United man kicked out and accidently hit the Welshman.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto   6.0
The uber-cool left-back was rarely troubled by Routledge and made good use of the ball, especially when he drilled passes towards Bale and Modric. Perhaps a little weak in the challenge in the lead-up to Sigurdsson's goal.

Gareth Bale     Top of the Match     7.5
Back on the left and back to his best. The Welshman gave Rangel a nightmare afternoon with a performance of pace, power and quality as time and again he raced directly at the Swansea backline. No surprise that he was involved in Spurs' goals.

Scott Parker   7.5
Back to what Spurs fans expect after a couple of below-par months. Snapped into tackles from the first whistle as he attempted to break up Swansea's passing rhythm. Set the tone for the performance with his energy and leadership.

Rafael van der Vaart   7.0
The Dutchman broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with his first league goal since December, sweeping the ball into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area. Kept his discipline well on the right side of midfield and was always a threat in the final third. Swung in the corner for Adebayor's first goal.

Luka Modric   7.0
The playmaker was given license to get forward by Harry Redknapp and produced some real moments of quality including a superb pass in the build-up to Van der Vaart's opener.

Sandro   6.0
The Brazilian worked hard and did a good job of putting Swansea midfielders under pressure, although he was cumbersome on the ball. Replaced by Lennon in the 71st minute.

Emmanuel Adebayor    7.5
Scored the two goals to seal the three points with two almost identical headers. His power and skill occupied the Swans' defenders throughout the afternoon and he was able to make the difference in front of goal when his side needed him.

• Substitutions
Aaron Lennon   6.5

The winger returned form injury in the 71st minute to replace Sandro. Had little involvement before an excellent run and cross as Adebayor sealed the points by heading home the third goal.

Danny Rose   N/A
Replaced Assou-Ekotto two minutes from time.

Tottenham 1-2 Norwich

Norwich put a big dent in Tottenham's Champions League ambitions with a hugely deserved victory at White Hart Lane.

The Canaries broke the deadlock through Anthony Pilkington in the first half and manager Paul Lambert was furious when his team were denied a blatant penalty when Ledley King clambered over Grant Holt in the Spurs box.

His anger intensified moments later when Jermain Defoe equalised, but the Canaries boss had the last laugh when Elliott Bennett hammered a powerful drive through a sea of defenders to inflict a massive defeat on the home side.

Tottenham vs Norwich Player Ratings

Hard work was the recipe to success for Norwich as they brought down Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

Norwich silenced the White Hart Lane faithful by going ahead midway through the first half, when Pilkington took advantage of a Ledley King error to send the ball past Brad Friedal. Tottenham equalized 15 minutes before half-time when Jake Livermore's defence-splitting pass sent Defoe one-on-one with Ruddy, and the striker calmly brought the score level.

The action and dramatics finally came to an exciting finish when Elliot Bennett punished Spurs for sloppy defending when he hit a screamer from 20 yards to give Norwich the win.

Tottenham
Brad Friedel - 6.5

Friedel did the best he could given the poor covering his defenders gave him. The goalkeeper made good saves from Pilikington and Ward to keep his team in the game.

Kyle Walker - 6
The full-back linked up well with Lennon down the flank, but his industry usually came to nothing for Spurs. Defensively, he looked out of depth and was unable to keep Pilikington quiet.

Younes Kaboul (off 45') - 6.5
Kaboul was Tottenham's best defender in this game, winning several headers against Norwich attackers and looking dangerous from attacking set-pieces. It was a big blow to Spurs' chances when he had to be taken off a minute before half-time.

Ledley King - 4
The experienced center-back looked completely out of sorts in this game and could not get a handle on Holt. King struggled with his touches and positioning and was undoubtedly his team's weak link in the match.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto - 6
Assou-Ekotto attempted several long balls down the flank for Bale, but the accuracy of his crosses left much to be desired. His performance was slightly better in the second-half and he would have scored after linking up with Adebayor had it not been for Ruddy's save.

Aaron Lennon - 6
The winger was full of pace and trickery but was let down as usual by woeful and inconsistent delivery. He did not seem to tire as the game went on, but his impact was muted by good defending on the part of Drury.

Jake Livermore (off 71') - 6
Livermore could not fill Scott Parker's shoes, as the midfielder found himself mostly chasing shadows and committing late tackles. His only saving grace was a good pass to split the Norwich defence, setting up Defoe to score.

Luka Modric - 5
The midfielder started the game brightly, being involved in almost every Tottenham attack. However, his efforts came to nothing as he could not find a way past a determined Norwich defence.

Gareth Bale - 6
Bale should be disappointed with his performance, as the winger is clearly capable of much better. Though he was unlucky not to have gotten on the score-sheet in the second half, he was not able to get past Martin for most of the game.

Louis Saha (off 46') - 5.5

The striker started off well, but seemed to run out of steam midway through the first half. Saha could not find his footing under heavy Norwich pressure, making it little surprise he was taken off at half-time.

Jermaine Defoe - 6
Defoe put on a lively showing upfront. The Englishman is perhaps the Tottenham player most deserving of a goal, and he did well to coolly put away his attempt for Spurs' only goal of the game.

Substitutions
Ryan Nelsen (on 45') - 6

The defender had an average game, making several important interceptions to deny Holt and Pilkington. However, he was very lucky to have not been punished for handling the ball in the penalty box on two separate occasions.

Emmanuel Adebayor (on 46') - 6.5
Adebayor's impact on the field was evident throughout the second half. The striker made several intelligent flicks to spur the Tottenham attack to life. However, his direct chances at goal were minimal, making it difficult for him to change the outcome of the game.

Rafael van der Vaart (on 71') - 5
Thrown on as a lifeline for Tottenham, van der Vaart could not impose himself in the midfield. The Dutchman had a quiet game by his standards.

Tottenham vs Chelsea Player Ratings

Tottenham

Carlo Cudicini - 5

Inexplicably handed a start against his former side, Cudicini failed to distinguish himself with an effort to earn a spot in the first team ahead of Friedel. There was little he could do about the goals, but a world-class keeper would have saved them.

Kyle Walker - 7
Walker showed why he is giving Micah Richards the run for his money as England's best right back with an immaculate display. Walker was always tested down the flank and acquitted himself well on a busy night against Ramires, Mata, Drogba and Kalou.

William Gallas - 4
Gallas was bullied by Drogba all night long and was frequently out of pace to keep up in the game.

Ledley King - 5
It was always good to see him lead the Tottenham defence. Was. Past tense. It's clear that King is past his prime and Tottenham will need to replace him with another world class defender in order to challenge at the top.

Benoit Assou-Ekotto - 6
The Cameroonian didn't show the excellent link up he has with Bale going forward but was excellent in one-on-one challenges defensively and forced Chelsea to play narrow.

Aaron Lennon - 6
Lennon was drifting all across the midfield and troubled the thin Chelsea midfield, providing amunnition for Adebayor and Van der Vaart to work with.

Scott Parker (Off 90') - 7
A typically hardworking performance in midfield, constantly hounding and harrying the Chelsea midfield to protect his back for. He also showed his value going forward, threading a precise pass for Adebayor to set up Spurs' only goal.

Luka Modric - 4.5
Ineffective offensively for most of the game being hounded by Mikel. Once again, the theory that a muted Modric is a muted Spurs.

Gareth Bale - 6
Bale constantly troubled Chelsea when he had the ball at his feet and burned Bosingwa for pace every time.

Rafael Van Der Vaart (Off 75') - 6.5
The Dutchman was Spurs' biggest threat in the first half, frequently drifting into dangerous positions and slipping passes forward. Had a header cleared off the line and had a cross that struck the post. However, he faded deeper into the second half.

Emmanuel Adebayor - 5.5
Adebayor had a hard time in the match and could have gotten something onto Van der Vaart's dangerous cross. He played a vital part in the build up to Bale's goal and never stopped running.

Substitutes
Jermain Defoe (On 75') - 5.5
Sandro (On 90')

Kyle Walker wins PFA Young Player of the Year award

Tottenham full-back picks up the gong after a fine first full season at White Hart Lane that saw him crash in a north London derby winner and make his England debut
.

Kyle Walker has been named the PFA Young Player of the Year after an impressive first full season for Tottenham.

The 21-year-old made his international debut in England’s friendly against Spain back in November and then made his first start against Sweden, picking up the man of the match award for his efforts.

He also became a fans favourite at White Hart Lane after scoring the winning goal in a north London derby victory over Arsenal with a 25-yard strike.

Walker's Spurs team-mate Gareth Bale and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero were among the favourites to win the award.

Also nominated were Arsenal's teenage midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck and Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge.
