1MDB: Najib is better than Jack Welch

KUALA LUMPUR: 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) will remain a passive company with no business activities until it settles all its debts.
Stating this, Deputy FinanceMinister Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani said 1MDB is on a “run-off” period to resolve its liabilities after which it will be closed down.
He said some of its staff have been given termination notices and it had also started to slowly retrench its staff, but Arul Kanda Kandasamy would remain as the caretaker CEO since he knows all about 1MDB.
“1MDB will run-off then after that we (will) close (it). There is no more 1MDB after this. “The dissolution is called run-off where all liabilities are completed but in between there will be no new liabilities created and no business activities,” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
However, he noted that the debts maturity varies where some are in 2022 and 2023 while the last one is in 2039.
Johari said the company was now in the process of transferring all its assets to the Finance Ministry before it heads to a closure.
“(The transfer) has already started and hopefully by end of the month or mid-June we should be able to resolve all this," he said.
Earlier in the Dewan Rakyat, Johari said 1MDB has settled all its domestic debts and is not allowed to take any borrowings from any local banks after this.
“The reason the government decided that 1MDB cannot borrow anymore is because it is in the process of running-off all the loans.
“When the run-off or rationalisation is done, it shouldn’t borrow any more because 1MDB’s business model is unsustainable. “It cannot continue doing business with that model. So (it has to) stop and resolve the problems,” he said. 
Johari said other measures in the rationalisation plan included selling its subsidiary Edra Global Energy to resolve its short term debts, selling of Bandar Malaysia land and debt asset swap through financial assets. 
He said after settling several short-term debts from the proceeds of Edra’s sale, 1MDB currently has cash in hand worth RM2.3 billion, which will be used to develop the Tun Razak Exchange. Johari said the ministry had agreed to implement the recommendations of the Public Accounts Committee, which probed the financial mismanagement in 1MDB.
