Film "Typhoon" to Be Distributed in U.S. thru DreamWorks SKG

The film "Typhoon" directed by Kwak Kyung-taik will be distributed to North America
next year through DreamWorks SKG, a major American distributor.
An official from CJ Entertainment, a distribution agency, said on Dec. 20, "We reached
an agreement last week with DreamWorks SKG, a major distributor in Hollywood, on
the distribution of 'Typhoon' in the American market. According to the agreement, the
film will be screened at American and Canadian theaters through DreamWorks SKG's
distribution network. We also agreed to continue talks on the distribution's timing, the
number of theaters, and other terms and conditions."
CJ Entertainment sent a 50-minute "promo tape" of "Typhoon" to DreamWorks early
last month, and will deliver additional marketing materials which are necessary for
the screening of the film in the United States next year to the American distributor by
late this month. Director Kwak Kyung-taik will visit the United States next month to
discuss this issue.
Kim Joo-sung, president of CJ Entertainment, said, "We will be able to distribute the
film in the United States through DreamWorks thanks to the mutual trust we have
built with the American distributor over the past ten years. We expect to have
additional opportunities to introduce Korean films to American audiences, with the
distribution of 'Typhoon' in the American market lending momentum."
CJ Entertainment established a branch in Los Angeles in March this year to make
inroads into the American market.
Meanwhile, DreamWorks SKG, whose films are being distributed in Korea by CJ
Entertainment, was founded jointly by Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and
David Geffen in 1995. Its ownership has recently been handed over to Paramount
Pictures.
An official from CJ Entertainment said, "The acquisition of DreamWorks by Paramount
has not affected our relationship with DreamWorks."

Actor Jang Dong-gun to Meet Fans at Ten Theaters in Seoul

Top star Jang Dong-gun will say hello to his fans onstage at ten theaters in Seoul.
The lead actor of the fantasy film "The Promise," directed by Chen Kaige and released
on Jan. 26, Jang will greet his fans onstage at a total of ten theaters in Seoul on Jan.
28, the first day of the lunar New Year's holidays.
He will visit most of the major theaters in Seoul, namely Gangbyon CGV, Megabox,
Piccadilly, Daehan Cinema, Lotte Avenue L, Seoul Cinema, Fantaseum, CineCity,
Cinus Central, and MMC.
Jang is taking the time to visit the theaters in Korea despite his busy schedule
promoting "The Promise" in Japan. On Jan. 24, he attended a preview and
promotional event of the film held in Tokyo, Japan alongside the Japanese actor in
the film Hiroyuki Sanada. "The Promise" will be released in Japan on Feb. 11.
"We cautiously suggested that Jang Dong-gun say hello to his fans onstage in the
country despite his tight schedule in Japan. But he gladly accepted our suggestion."
said an official from a film agency on Jan. 27.

Actor Jang Dong-kun Stages One-Man Protest against Screen Quota Cut

Actor Jang Dong-kun staged a one-man protest against the screen quota cut for
domestic films, but had to move to another location due to about 2,000 of his fans
rushing to see him. He started the protest in front of the Kyobo Building in
Gwanghwamun, Seoul on Feb. 6 at 1:00 p.m., but stopped it in just three minutes
due to a gathering crowd. Jang went into the building on his own. In the
meantime, some of his fans fell down.
Jang resumed his one-man protest in front of the main gate of the National
Assembly in Yoido, Seoul at 2:30 p.m. He carried a picket sign reading, "Be
friends of the screen quota. We'll fly the Taegukgi around the world." With stubble
on his face, he wore a thick beige windbreaker. He said, "The screen quota should
be seen not from an economic point of view, but from a cultural point of view."
The one-man protest is being carried out by a series of actors, with actor Choi Min-
sik taking over for Jang on Feb. 7.

"The Promise" Starring Jang Dong-kun Ranks 4th in Japan

The film "The Promise," starring Korean actor Jang Dong-kun, has climbed to
fourth place on Japan's box-office chart in the first week of its release there.
According to the Japanese Box-Office Service on Feb. 14, "The Promise," directed
by Chen Kaige and starring Jang, Hiroyuki Sanada and Cecilia Cheung, was
released in Japan on Feb. 11 through film distribution agency Warner Brothers
and finished fourth on the box-office chart over the weekend of Feb. 11-12.
Another film, "Running Wild," directed by Kim Sung-soo and starring Korean stars
Kwon Sang-woo and Yu Ji-tae, was released in Japan through film distribution
agency Toshiba on Feb. 11, ranking 10th on the same box-office chart. Before its
release, "Running Wild" made headlines as it sold 35,000 tickets through advance
rservations alone--nearly the largest number of tickets sold in advance for a
Korean film in Japan.
Japanese fans took interest in the rivalry between the two hallyu stars, Jang and
Kwon, with "The Promise" and "Running Wild" released on the same day in Japan.
In Korea, "Running Wild" was released on Jan. 12 and "The Promise" on Jan.16.
