Hockey: Fans can watch world class action for free

SAMSUNG officially became the title sponsors yesterday for the Champions Trophy hockey tournament at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil from Nov 29-Dec 9.

While Samsung was tight-lipped about the sponsorship amount, the biggest cheer of the day came when Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) president Tan Sri Admiral (rtd) Mohamed Anwar Mohamed Nor announced that fans can watch the tournament for free.

"Inline with our commitment to develop and popularise the sport in Malaysia, fans can watch the Champions Trophy free of charge," said Anwar.

The Champions Trophy is ranked as the third most prestigious tournament on the International Hockey Federation calendar after the World Cup and the Olympics.

The teams that will be in action at Bukit Jalil are defending champions the Netherlands, world champions Germany, Olympic champions Australia, South Korea, Britain, Pakistan and Malaysia.

The 11-day tournament will be played on a round robin with the top two teams qualifying for the final on Nov 9. Malaysia play their opener against Australia on Nov 29.

On the team's preparations and target, Anwar said: "Realistically, we will be challenging the best in the world while we are ranked outside the top-ten.

"But we have the material to play some good hockey and in the process spring a surprise or two in the tournament. I am sure with the local support, the team will not disappoint."

The young Malaysian team, which were assembled after the disastrous Doha Asian Games last year, have improved tremendously over a short time, as they won silver in the Azlan Shah Cup and a bronze in the Asia Cup this year.

Selection will be done a week from the tournament, and the three criteria will be physical, psychological and discipline.

"We have also been monitoring the psychological state of the players, as some have shown in the past that they are good domestic players, but freeze at the international scene," said Anwar.

The total budget to host the tournament will be in the region of RM1 million. Yesterday, the official website, www.championstrophy2007.com was also launched. There will be live coverage of some of the matches on the website.

Hockey: Kumar in line of fire
By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: Goalkeeper S. Kumar will face stiff tests in the Samsung Champions Trophy hockey tournament, which begins tomorrow at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Malaysia are the lowest ranked side at number 15 in the world and in the eight-nation tournament. And the pressure will definitely be great on Kumar to keep his goal intact.

Kumar has come under the charge of goalkeeper coach Shahid Ali Khan since May and the Pakistani believes that he will be up to the challenges.

The 43-year-old Shahid, who was rated as one of the top goalkeepers in the world in the 80s and was a member of the Pakistan team who won the World Cup in 1982 and the Olympic gold medal in 1984, said that he was happy to have Kumar under his charge.

揔umar is a hardworking goalkeeper and more than willing to learn new things. He looks more confident in his game now and will be able to carry out his duties well in the Champions Trophy,

And both teams will be eyeing a win when the meet at 6.05pm today.

Malaysian coach Sarjit Singh said that his team played well in the two matches and now must look at improving further in the coming matches.

揟hat is our objective. We need to secure some points and Britain are one of the teams we stand a chance against. But it must also be remembered that they are way ahead of us in the world rankings and will not want to lose either,

Britain tambah luka skuad Sarjit

IMPIAN besar Malaysia mahu mengutip mata pertama dalam kejohanan hoki Trofi Juara-Juara berakhir dengan nota penuh pedih apabila tewas kepada Britain 3-2 di Stadium Hoki Nasional, Bukit Jalil, semalam buat mencetus senario menakutkan mungkin bakal menghuni tangga tercorot kali ini.

Selepas anak buah Sarjit Singh bangkit menyamakan kedudukan 2-2 pada minit ke-62 buat menyalakan harapan meragut sekurang-kurangnya satu mata pemain Britain, Ben Hawes tampil selaku pemusnah dengan jaringan kemenangan buat lawan ketika permainan hanya berbaki tiga minit mahu ditamatkan.

Meskipun berjaya mempamer aksi terpuji, tonggak pertahanan negara bagaikan 'tempang' tanpa kehadiran tonggak utama - Baljit Singh Charun Singh yang direhatkan kerana cedera selain penyerang - Hafifihafiz Hanafi.

Spain hold Holland, Germany fight back for victory

KUALA LUMPUR: Spain lived up to their billing as one of the world抯 top teams when they held hot favourites Holland to a 3-3 draw at the Champions Trophy yesterday.

In other matches, Germany kept up their winning record when they came back from a goal down to edge out Asia抯 number one ranked side South Korea 2-1.

The Spain-Holland tie was the most exciting seen so far in the tournament, with both team trading blows in an all-action performance.

Spain had a score to settle after Holland beat them 3-2 in the European Championship final in August.

Holland went ahead with a superb field goal through Teun de Nooijer in the sixth minute. Then Spain took control of the game and pushed the Dutch back with two field goals through Victor Sojo and Eduard Tubau.

Two-one down at half-time, the Dutchmen came out flying in the second half and scored from a well-rehearsed free hit when Rob Reckers connected from close range in the 42nd minute.

Spain hit back when they broke through in the 48th minute, with David Alegre slamming home a long clearance from midfield, but again Holland came back, and this time Ronald Brouwer thumped home the equaliser in the 55th.

Spanish coach Maurit Hendriks said his side should have won, and said he was disappointed at the goals conceded.

揟he strength of Holland at this moment is definitely the fact that they have a lethal penalty corner,

Hockey/Champions Trophy: Complacent Malaysia lose

By: Jugjet Singh

MALAYSIA got comfortable after taking an early lead, and then paid the price going down 3-2 to Britain in the Champions Trophy at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

It was a pathetic performance from a team who played superb back-to-back matches against Australia and the Netherlands. But yesterday, the crowd could not believe their eyes when simple mistakes crept into Malaysia's game. There was no co-ordination in a match the hosts needed to win to avoid last spot in the eight-team tournament.

Malaysia take on Pakistan today and if the national team don't buck up, they will be in for a hiding.

Yesterday, Malaysia played well in patches in the first half and took the lead in the 12th minute when Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin scored a field goal.

But after the break, it was a breeze for Britain to equalise through Stephen Dick in the 49th minute, and then took the lead with a field from Rob Moore just three minutes later. The hosts drew level when Shahrun Nabil scored a cracker in the 62nd minute, only to lose when they allowed Ben Hawes to take a shot from just inside the semi-circle.

Goalkeeper S. Kumar was guilty of letting in two soft goals, and not surprisingly, was replaced with Khairulnizam Ibrahim which made little difference as the reserve keeper let in the third between his pads.

Britain coach Jason Lee said: "We were lucky today (yesterday) as we scored some sloppy goals as the players were very tired. Malaysia were unlucky to have lost after playing so well in the earlier matches."

Luck, or the lack of it, played only a small part as Jiwa Mohan said they only had themselves to blame for the defeat.

"We took the lead and then let Britain back into the match. We tried our best and even equalised but then let in a simple goal and lost valuable ground in this tournament. We only have ourselves to blame," said Jiwa.

Jiwa also agreed that they made some silly mistakes, and gave Britain control of the match.

"We made some really simple mistakes in the second half which turned the match away from us, and this is what we have to avoid in the remaining matches." In another match, defending champions Netherlands were held to a 3-3 draw by Spain in a thriller.

Netherlands took the lead off Teun de Nooijer (sixth) but Spain equalised through Victor Sojo (30th) and then took control when Eduard Tubau scored in the 32nd.

The Dutch equalised through Rob Reckers (42nd) but Spain took the lead again in the 47th minute through David Alegre.

The Netherlands never gave up and snatched a point in the 54th minute when Ronald Brouwer scored the equaliser to keep his team on track for the final.

Malaysia hit back to hold Pakistan to a draw

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia earned their first point in the Samsung Champions Trophy when they fought back from a two-goal deficit to snatch a 2-2 draw with Pakistan at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Malaysia, who lost their first three matches to Australia, Holland and Britain, looked to be heading for another miserable day when they trooped off at half-time 0-2 down.

The hero: Jiwa Mohan (centre) reeling off to celebrate his late equaliser that gave Malaysia a 2-2 draw against Pakistan in their Champions Trophy match yesterday

Pakistan went ahead through Akhtar Ali in the 19th minute before Ghazanfar Ali added the second in the 34th minute.

Malaysia reduced the deficit through Chua Boon Huat in the 54th minute before Jiwa Mohan grabbed the equaliser in the 64th minute.

National coach Sarjit Singh was happy with his men抯 performance and felt that there was improvement in the team.

揟his is a learning experience for us and we need to stick with that objective,

Now, Zulkifli is ruled out of Olympic qualifiers

KUALA LUMPUR: Defender Zulkifli Rejab, who missed the on-going Champions Trophy due to a leg injury, is now likely to be out for the next six months.

The burly defender, who was on the verge of recovery, twisted his knee during a training session. He now needs to undergo surgery, thus ruling him out of the Olympic qualifiers in April as well.

And that has thrown a spanner in the national team抯 preparation as Zulkifli is the main penalty corner drag flicker.

Team manager George Koshy said yesterday that the MRI was done on Zulkifli with the team doctor recommending a surgery to repair the damage.

揥e are sending Zulkifli for another test but it doesn抰 look good. If surgery is needed then he will need at least six months to recover. It is a big blow for us as he is a good flicker in the set-piece moves,

Penalty corner blues

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have not scored a direct penalty corner goal in the last four matches in the Champions Trophy. And national coach Sarjit Singh is worried.

Sarjit said that defender Baljit Singh Sarjab and midfielder Jiwa Mohan had failed miserably in their conversions.

揃aljit failed in all his seven attempts while Jiwa also failed to find the net in his five attempts. I am really worried with our direct attempts.

揃oth the players must start scoring from direct attempts as we cannot always rely on penalty corner set-pieces,

By S. RAMAGURU

KUALA LUMPUR: The national hockey team will undergo a two-week intensive training camp in Desaru as part of their preparations for an Olympic qualifying tournament in Japan in April.

The emphasis in training at the camp scheduled for Jan 6-18 will be on the physical aspect. A few mental training sessions are also in store and there will be limited hockey sessions at the nearby Bandar Penawar Sports School.

Physical training will be conducted by German York Techman, who is a full-time employee of the National Sports Institute (NSI). Mental training will be conducted by NSI抯 psychologist Fred Tan.

Coach Sarjit Singh said that the players would undergo fitness tests next week before leaving for the camp.

揂ll 32 players are required to attend the camp. It is a very crucial part of our programme and this will count towards selection later,

Hockey: Dutch will not show Malaysians any mercy
By : Ajitpal Singh

NETHERLANDS coach Michael van der Heuvel has told his charges to be merciless when they play Malaysia in the Under-21 Eight-Nation Invitational at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil today.

Malaysia skipper Ahmad Kazamirul Nasruddin says they will try hard to
match the Dutch in their Under-21 Eight-Nation Invitational match at
the National Hockey Stadium today

"I have warned my players not to take them lightly as it is always difficult playing against the hosts.

"But more than that, all the young Malaysian boys have made tremendous progress in their game," said van der Heuvel yesterday.

The Dutch are third in the standings with eight points after two wins and two draws.

"I have been assessing Malaysia's progress and what I have noticed is that they have grown in confidence and self-belief. If they keep it up, they could make things tough for us.
"Overall, I'm happy with the way my boys have performed but they tend to be wasteful at times.

"I hope it will change against Malaysia," he added.

The last time both teams met was in the Eight-Nation event in Germany last year where the Netherlands hammered Malaysia 6-2.

Malaysia's coach V. Muraleedharan said it will be tough to compete against the European giants as his charges are still lacking in understanding and finishing.

"We could have beaten South Korea (1-1) on Monday but the players failed to make open goal chances count. I hope they will not be too wasteful against the Netherlands," said Muraleedharan.

Malaysia captain Ahmad Kazamirul Nasruddin said the team would try hard to match the Dutch.

"We must not concede too many penalty corners against them or it will be disastrous for us," said Ahmad Kazamirul.
