DR.

George Town inner city in miniature

By WINNIE YEOH

AS George Town celebrates its Unesco world heritage site listing, a group of young artists and sculptors have come up with a collection of miniature heritage buildings and sculptures featuring scenes of traditional inner city.

About 20 sculptures on the Penang Heritage Theme have been completed so far to showcase the inner city's beautiful old clan houses and temples, a streetscape, roadside hawker stalls such as those selling satay, chendol and laksa as well as traditional barber shop and a vibrant wet market scene.

The artists have painstakingly created their works of art, and included even the smallest details to make their work look authentic, such as intricate paintings on the walls and roofs of a clan house, half drawn wooden blinds of old shophouses, a market goer bending to pick some vegetables and a group of elderly men squatting by the roadside to have their meal.

The unique project was started four years ago by a group of enthusiastic artists from SculptureAtWork (M) Sdn Bhd, all locally trained.

Company CEO Soon Yee Ling, 40, said they started making heritage sculptures in 2003 although the company, which specialised in commercial sculpting, was formed 10 years ago.

揑t takes a lot of patience and passion to complete a sculpture as it is a very delicate piece of art.

揙ne also needs to have a sharp eye for details that is the fundamental requirement for a sculptor,

Link to original article

Ketua Polis Daerah Barat Daya, Supritendan Hatta Md.

Pedal power rides to the fore

By Tan Cheng Yean

GEORGE TOWN: The bicycle is back in vogue in Penang, and for good reason.

Two thousand cyclists rode in a 12km bicycle ride organised by the Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP) yesterday to show that pedal power was one answer to the recent petrol price hike.

They took 45 minutes to cycle down Lebuh Pantai, Lebuh Chulia, Jalan Penang, Jalan Burma, Jalan Anson, Jalan Perak, Jalan Macalister, Lebuhraya Peel, Jalan Pangkor, Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, Lebuh Farquhar, Lebuh Light and back to Lebuh Downing where they had been flagged off.

CAP president S.M. Mohamed Idris who flagged off the ride at Bangunan Tuanku Syed Putra said the state government should create bicycle lanes along roads.

He also urged the state government to provide free bicycles to civil servants who wanted to cycle to work.

"Penang is a suitable place for cycling as most destinations are reachable by bicycles. The bicycle can help consumers save on transport costs," he added.

Mohamed Idris said the bicycle was cheap to maintain and was a healthy way of travelling.

"With this campaign and hopefully more to come, we hope to create a network of bicycle lovers throughout Malaysia to demonstrate the use of the bicycle as a transport solution," he added.

He said Malaysians had to reduce their dependence on motorised transport to reduce carbon emission and combat climate change.

Mohamed Idris also urged the Federal Government to declare on a Saturday a National Cycling Day to promote cycling.

Among the cyclists were retired teacher Tan Tiang Tat, 60, his daughter-in-law Lum Pek Yok, 38, and grandchildren Lim Shian Ying, 11, and Lim Shian Weei, 9.

"Yesterday, we practised hard at the playground at Sungai Nibong," said Tan.

"Today's event is well organised and we enjoyed ourselves," he added.

Meanwhile, Safiah Ibrahim, 49, came with 10 other friends -- eight women and two men -- from Bukit Mertajam to take part in the campaign.

"We hired a lorry to transport our bicycles while we drove here in two cars," she said.

Safiah said she was part of an all-women cycling group.

They cycle three or four times a week around Tasek Gelugor, Ara Kuda and Sungai Dua on the mainland.

They had no trouble finishing yesterday's ride as they are used to cycling more than 12km on their regular trips.

Since 2006, CAP has organised six bicycle campaigns in Penang, Alor Star, Ipoh, UUM.

10,000 expected at dragon boat challenge

July 30, 2008

GEORGE TOWN: More than 10,000 international dragon boat paddlers, their family members and visitors are expected to be in Penang in conjunction with the 6th Club Crew World Championships and the 8th Asian Dragon Boat Championships starting tomorrow.

They are among the 220 teams from 22 countries participating in the three-day event, organised by the Penang International Dragon Boat Federation and the International Dragon Boat Federation.

Western Pennsylvania-based Pittsburgh Paddlefish team's manager Carolyn Newkirk said her team members were thrilled to be here for the club crew world championships.

"This is the first time most of us are in Penang and we are very excited with the prospect of leading our challenge here.

"It should be a very exciting event as we have been told that there are more than 7,000 fellow paddlers rowing in various categories at the Teluk Bahang dam," said Newkirk, whose team was sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, the world's leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare company.

Newkirk said her members also could not wait to visit the George Town heritage enclave especially after its recent listing in the World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Organising chairman Danny Law said the state government had put in a lot of efforts to make the event successful.

He said the large turnout would also create an enormous impact on the state's tourism industry.

"We are happy that the event has attracted more than 10,000 visitors including the competitors and their family members to the island.

"In fact, the state government regards this as an opportune time to lure the visitors to the event, especially with the recent listing of George Town as a World Heritage Site," said Law.

Baja subsidi terlebih pasir

Oleh Tuty Haryanti Ahmad Rodzi
bhnews@bharian.com.my

Link to original article

Hadir sama, Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Bertindak Petani Mada, Kedah, Cik Ani Mat Zain.

New traffic system proposal

By TUNKU SHAHARIAH
August 1, 2008

Link to original article

MOTORISTS on Penang island should brace themselves for yet another change to the traffic system in Sungai Pinang, Jelutong, Island Glades and around Burmah Road.

The Penang Municipal Council is considering changing the one-way traffic system in Sungai Pinang Road (between Jelutong Road and Patani Road), Patani Road (between Sungai Pinang Road and Veterinary Road), Veterinary Road and Jelutong Road (between Gurdwara Road, C.Y. Choy Road and Sungai Pinang Road) back to two-way traffic flow.

On the other hand, the present two-way traffic system in Gurdwara Road (between C.Y. Choy Road and River Road) has been proposed to be turned into a one-way street.

Aerial view: This stretch of Jalan Jelutong is presently a one-way street.

The people are given the opportunity to decide whether they want the change as the council is seeking public feedback before implementing the new system.

A council spokesman said distribution roads complementing the one-way street circuit would not face heavy traffic flow if the two-way street system was introduced.

揟his is because most vehicles will be using main roads such as Jelutong Road and Sungai Pinang Road while Patani Road will be the inter road between Datuk Keramat Road and River Road. Residents in Veterinary Road and River Road are unaffected as they can continue to use these roads.

He added that residents living along these roads had earlier objected to the implementation of the one-way traffic system in 2003 because of the increase in traffic volume in the area.

The council is also proposing to make some changes to the traffic flow along Lorong Delima 5 and part of Lorong Delima 3 and Lorong Delima 7 to turn them into a one-way streets.

This would mean the flow of traffic along Lorong Delima 3 would be from the direction of Lorong Delima 6 heading towards Lorong Delima 5.

Jalan CY Choy heading toward Jalan Jelutong.

Traffic flow along Lorong Delima 5 would flow from the direction of Lorong Delima 3 to Lorong Delima 7 while traffic flow along Lorong Delima 7 would flow from the direction of Lorong Delima 5 to Lorong Delima 6.

At Burma Road, the plan is to turn part of Jalan Servis (from Burma Road to Irrawadi Road) and Chow Thye Road (from Irrawadi Road to Burma Road) into a one-way traffic.

The spokesman said the public is invited to submit their views on the proposed traffic rearrangements before Aug 23 so that the council can raise them at its meeting prior to the system抯 implementation.

Views can be sent to Pengarah Kejuruteraan, Jabatan Kejuruteraan, Majlis Perbandaran Pulau Pinang, Tingkat 13, Komtar, 10675 Pulau Pinang or fax to 04-2611990 or call Rafidah or Rashidah at 04-2592202 or email rejendra@mppp.gov.my.

For more details on the proposal, visit the council抯 website at www.mppp.gov.my.

By ANN TAN

Link to original article

WHEN partially blind student Alfa Nur Aini Erman Afandi, 17, walked up the stage with the help of her friend to receive the Best Student in Inclusive Programme award, her father Erman Afandi Sabdul, watched her with a sense of pride.

The St George’s Girls School Form Five student received the award from Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas during the school’s Hari Anugerah Cemerlang in Penang on Friday.

“I feel very happy and seronok studying here because the teachers and friends are very good and helpful. I’m glad that I can study together with the students despite being partially blind. The teachers and my schoolmates treat me just the same,” she said.

Well done: Alfa Nur Aini getting a congratulatory peck from Erman.

Erman Afandi, 51, said he never expected her daughter to do so well in school.

“Her primary special school teacher saw her potential and recommended her to study in this school.

“Initially, I was so worried about how she was going to cope with the studies, particularly in a premier school that would have a lot of competitions and stress,” he said.

But Alfa Nur Aini, who has six siblings, two of whom are also visually impaired, was very determined.

Meanwhile, Sarah Chew Sue Mei won the Best Student 2008 award.

The 17-year-old prefect surprised everyone in the hall when the master of ceremony went through a long list of her achievements.

Abdul Rahman: presenting the Best Student 2008 award to Sue Mei.

“I think my active participation in academic and co-curricular activities won me the award,” she said, adding that she also learnt piano, violin, cello and other musical instruments.

Asked how she handled the hectic schedule, Chew, who obtained 13As in her mid-term exam, said she would always grab any free time to do her revision.

“I’ve never found myself suffocated with the many activities. Music and co-curricular activities are the medium to help me release some stress,” she said.

Terminal sementara selesa

Oleh WAN NAJIB WAN DAUD

TERMINAL Pengangkutan Sementara Penang Sentral akan digunakan untuk kemudahan orang ramai sehingga kerja-kerja pembinaan hab pengangkutan Penang Sentral siap dibangunkan kelak. - Gambar SAZALI CHE DIN

Namun katanya, pihaknya menjangkakan pertambahan bilangan pengendali bas terutamanya menjelang musim perayaan nanti.

Bagaimanapun, pengendali bas awam RapidPenang Sdn.
