Grab this sharpshooter
THE best time to test any camera is when you go on an overseas trip.
The Canon EOS 30D dSLR camera with an optional 85mm f1.2 lens.
Unfamiliar surroundings, unpredictable weather and unexpected people will prove your camera's worth as well as sharpen your photography skills.
We did just that on a recent trip to Hoi An, Vietnam, as we put the latest Canon EOS 30D digital single-lens reflex (dSLR) camera through its paces.
That the camera passed with flying colours is no surprise as it is the latest in a long line of mid-range dSLRs from the Japanese company.
The 30D is not drastically different from the earlier 20D, but the new 8.2 megapixel model incorporates some much asked-for features.
The most visible upgrade is the larger 2.5-inch LCD screen which lets your friends see the displayed images clearly when everyone huddles around the camera
Another addition is the Picture Style settings (brought over from the higher-end Canon cameras), which allow you to quickly choose the look and feel of your photos.

Each of the six modes including Standard, Neutral or Portrait, have different settings for contrast and colour tone that mimics the good old film cameras of old.
Apart from the overly-magenta Portrait modes, this is a dummy-proof technology.
Then there is the spot metering mode, which allows photographers to take precise exposure readings off a very small portion of the viewfinder.
This is invaluable for nature photography when you have to aim at one subject for hours.

GOOD SPEED
We also liked the shooting speed - five frames per second is more than enough for most people, even working professionals.
The jewel in the crown is Canon's now-legendary image sensor, which generates milky smooth images throughout the entire range of film speeds.
Even if you shoot in very poor lighting conditions, the amount of 'noise' in the image is kept remarkably low.
The sensor draws very little power, so the camera battery was still going strong after 900 shots.

Now all this tech talk can be quite heavy, so we prefer to let our 30D photographs do the talking.
All images here were reproduced straight out of the camera.
There was no need to adjust the colour or sharpness using photo-editing software.
The EOS 30D is available for $2,699 (with kit lens) and $2,499 (body alone). |

When I'm feeling blue,
All I have to do
Is take a look at you,
Then I'm not so blue
When you're close to me,
I can feel your heart beat
I can hear you breathing in my ear
Wouldn't you agree,
Baby you and me,
We've got a groovy
Kind of love
