COMMUTERS who walk to and from the Taman Paramount LRT station can be assured of their safety as they walk along Jalan 21/1 — the road connecting the station to the main road.

Kampung Tunku state liaison volunteers have set up a makeshift observation point outside the station to ensure the safety of office workers and college students who walk along Jalan 21/1.

Kampung Tunku state liaison officer Kelvin Chong said the observation point would be manned on a daily basis, from 5pm to 10pm beginning today.

“For three weeks, we will accompany commuters as they walk along Jalan 21/1 upon request,” he said.

“We hope to carry this out until we can work out a plan with the Petaling Jaya police to assign foot patrols.

“We also want the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to increase the number of streetlights along this road and install closed-circuit television cameras,” he said.

Chong added that the observation point would also raise safety awareness among LRT commuters and residents.

“We encourage everyone to use a steering lock for their vehicles, secure their homes and not be careless in leaving their car engines running while they are out of their vehicles. We offer practical help and advice,” he said.

He added that the bureau was concerned and would go all out to curb crime in Sea Park and Taman Paramount.

Student Lee Yuet May, 21, said she felt much safer having the volunteers walk with her along the Jalan 21/1 stretch and, at times, even further.

“Many commuters and even residents are afraid to use this road at night as it is not bright enough.

“A majority of the people feel there is an urgent need for more streetlights. We hope MBPJ will install the streetlights soon,” she said.

Pensioner Yeong Soh, 79, urged the police to conduct foot patrols along Jalan 21/1.
