Ukraine 'bears full responsibility' for MH17 crash, Russia says
AFP NewsAFP News – 2 hours 36 minutes ago

Russia's defence minister on Wednesday told his Malaysian counterpart that Ukraine bore full responsibility for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crash that left 298 dead.
"The crash happened in the airspace of Ukraine which bears full, total responsibility for what has happened," Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told Hishammuddin Hussein, who was in Moscow to discuss the ongoing MH17 investigation.

"I am convinced that if Ukraine solved its domestic problems without the use of armed forces, without the bloodshed there over the past month, without the use of heavy artillery... this tragedy would not have happened," Shoigu said in televised remarks.
Hishammuddin arrived in Moscow a day after Dutch investigators released a preliminary report on the July 17 disaster

"I very much appreciate your patience," he told Russian authorities, referring to the ongoing investigation.
Kiev and the West believe the Boeing 777, which plunged out of the sky en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, was hit by a rebel surface-to-air missile supplied by Russia.
Moscow denies the claims, and points the finger at Kiev.
Hishammuddin was also due to meet with Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin, Malaysia's Moscow embassy and the Russian foreign ministry said.

"The visit will last less than a day," a spokeswoman for the embassy said.
Hishammuddin was in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Tuesday and will visit Amsterdam next, the spokeswoman added.
Dutch experts on Tuesday released initial findings in their probe into the crash, saying MH17 "broke up in the air probably as the result of structural damage caused by a large number of high-energy objects that penetrated the aircraft from outside".
While the report from the Dutch Safety Board does not apportion blame over the July air disaster, it could heighten Western pressure on Moscow over its role in the bloody Ukraine conflict.

MH17 report 'points to' missile attack
THE HAGUE

MALAYSIA Airlines Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine after being hit by "a large number of high-energy objects", the Dutch Safety Board said in findings that appear to point to a missile attack on the plane.

The Boeing 777 broke up in the air, most likely as a result of structural damage after being penetrated from the outside, the Hague-based investigator said in the first official report into the July 17 tragedy that killed 298 people.

"There are no indications that the MH17 crash was caused by a technical fault or by actions of the crew," the safety board said, adding that the flight had proceeded as normal, "after which it ended abruptly".

MH17 was carrying 283 passengers and 15 crew members when it went down while travelling over a war zone in eastern Ukraine, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

The United States has said the aircraft was most likely destroyed by a surface-to-air missile fired by pro-Russia rebels, while the breakaway groups and Russian President Vladimir Putin have blamed Ukrainian forces.

An analysis of the plane's cockpit voice recorder revealed no warning tones in the cockpit, and no emergency was declared by the flight crew, the report said.

"The pattern of wreckage on the ground suggests that the aircraft split into pieces during flight," it added.

The preliminary findings are based on the cockpit voice recorder, flight data recorder, data from air traffic control, radar images and satellite photos, the board had said on Aug 11.

A final report with more detailed conclusions is due within a year of the crash.

When the conversation stopped....

PUTRAJAYA: The pilot of the downed MH17 was still communicating with Dnipropetrovsk air traffic control (ATC) centre when their conversation ended abruptly at 1.19pm (eastern Ukraine local time).

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic) said the data downloaded from the cockpit voice recorder clearly showed the conversation stopped abruptly, adding that the conversation was about flight details.

“They were talking about the (flying) height. It was just a normal conversation between the ATC and pilot. There was no other sound,” he told reporters after revealing the preliminary report on the MH17 tragedy here yesterday.

Liow was replying to a question on whether the cockpit voice recorder had recorded any unusual sounds before the plane went down.

He said the preliminary report stated that the last transmission from the crew of MH17 was “ROMEO NOVEMBER DELTA, MALAYSIAN, one seven”.

“There was nothing after that, no other sound. The ATC made a radio transmission to flight MH17, which began at 1.20pm and ended five seconds later.

“The crew did not respond to the repeated transmissions,” he said.

Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) director-general Datuk Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, who was also at the press conference, said ROMEO NOVEMBER DELTA was a code for a flight waypoint.

Liow added that the Government would explain the report to the families of Malaysian crews and passengers.

All calm in the cockpit before tragedy, says report

PETALING JAYA: There was nothing out of the ordinary happening in the cockpit of MH17 in the minutes before the plane broke up in mid-air while flying over eastern Ukraine on July 17.

The preliminary report on the crash said the cockpit voice recorders (CVR) of the B-777 did not register any aural alert or warning of aircraft system malfunction.

“There was also no indication of any emergency or abnormality, judging from the communications between the flight crew members until the end of the recording,” the report said.

“The replay of the CVR matched Air Traffic Control (ATC) communications with the aircraft. The recording also included crew communications, which gave no indication that there was anything abnormal during the flight.

“The recording then ended abruptly,” it said.

Information from the plane’s Flight Data Recorders (FDR) showed that the engines were running at normal cruising power and were operating normally.

It added that the team of experts investigating the crash was able to retrieve all the data despite external damage to the black boxes containing the CVR and FDR.
