PETALING JAYA: Health Minister, Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam (pic) on Tuesday called on the media not to sensationalise Ebola related news as the Government has taken the necessary measures to detect the virus.

"There are people of African descent in Malaysia, including students and some of them do return to their country for holidays.

"To be on the safe side, we do take it seriously when a person of West African descent develops a febrile illness.

“In such occurrences, we investigate them thoroughly and take all the necessary precautions," he said in his Facebook page Tuesday.

Subramaniam added that, at present, there are screening processes at all entry points to detect fever.

"We also record the particulars of those who return from the 'so called' yellow fever zone.

“However, a person of African descent can, like most of us, develop a cold, flu or a viral fever and it is preposterous to label all such cases as Ebola suspects.

"It is true that we have investigated some people from West Africa and would like to verify that none of them had Ebola," he said.

Referring to the case in Kuching, he said the last patient had gone to Africa 6 months ago, and though he is of low risk, he is still being examined.

"No one gains from creating panic in the society and therefore, I call for all journalists to avoid sensationalising the issue," he added.

On Monday, a 24-year old Zimbabwean student in Sarawak was brought in to be monitored after developing Ebola- like symptoms.

Statistics:
There have been more than 4,400 confirmed human cases and more than 2,500 deaths since the discovery of Ebola.

Timeline:

*Includes outbreaks resulting in more than 100 deaths or special cases.

1976 - First recognition of the EBOV disease is in Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo). The outbreak has 318 reported human cases, leading to 280 deaths. An SUDV outbreak also occurs in Sudan (now South Sudan), which incurs 284 cases and 151 deaths.

1989 - In Reston, Virginia, macaque monkeys imported from the Philippines are found to be infected with the Ebola virus (later named the Ebola-Reston virus).

1990 - In Texas and Virginia quarantine facilities, four humans develop Ebola antibodies after contact with monkeys imported from the Philippines. None of the humans has symptoms.

1995 - An outbreak in Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) leads to 315 reported cases and at least 250 deaths.

2000-2001 - A Ugandan outbreak (SUDV) results in 425 human cases and 224 deaths.

2001-2002 - An EBOV outbreak occurs on the border of Gabon and Republic of the Congo (ROC), which results in 53 deaths on the Gabon side and at least 43 deaths on the Republic of the Congo side.

December 2002-April 2003 - An EBOV outbreak in Republic of the Congo results in 143 reported cases and 128 deaths.

2007 - An EBOV outbreak occurs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), 187 of the 264 cases reported result in death. In late 2007, an outbreak in Uganda leads to 37 deaths. 149 cases were reported.

November 2008 - The Ebola-Reston virus (RESTV) is detected in five humans in the Philippines. They are workers on a pig farm and slaughterhouse and suffer no symptoms. This is the first known occurrence of the Reston virus in pigs.

August 26, 2014 - The Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo notifies the World Health Organization of an Ebola outbreak in the country. It is the seventh outbreak in the country since 1976, when the virus was first identified near the Ebola river. The outbreak is not related to the ongoing outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. As of September 9, 62 cases and 35 deaths have been reported in the Democratic Repulic of Congo.

2014 West Africa Outbreak:
Confirmed or suspected cases of Ebola as of August 31, 2014 (World Health Organization):

"In Guinea, a total of 86 suspected cases, including 59 deaths (case fatality ratio: 68.5%), had been reported as of March 24, 2014. Preliminary results from the Pasteur Institute in Lyon, France suggest Zaire ebolavirus as the causative agent."

April 16, 2014 - The New England Journal of Medicine publishes a report, speculating that the current outbreak's Patient Zero was a two-year-old from Guinea. The child died on December 6, 2013, followed by his mother, sister and grandmother over the next month.

July 2014 - Patrick Sawyer, a top government official in the Liberian Ministry of Finance, dies at a local Nigerian hospital. He is the first American to die in what officials are calling "deadliest Ebola outbreak in history."

July 2014 - Nancy Writebol, an American aid worker in Liberia, tests positive for Ebola. According to Samaritan's Purse, Writebol is infected while treating Ebola patients in Liberia.

July 26, 2014 - Kent Brantly, medical director for Samaritan Purse's Ebola Consolidated Case Management Center in Liberia, is infected with the virus. According to Samaritan's Purse, Brantly is infected while treating Ebola patients.

July 31, 2014 - CDC raises its warning to Level 3. It warns U.S. residents to avoid "nonessential travel" to Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia.

August 2, 2014 - A specially equipped medical plane carrying Ebola patient Dr. Kent Brantly lands at Dobbins Air Reserve Base in Marietta, Georgia. He is then driven by ambulance to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

August 4, 2014 - CNN reports that three top secret, experimental vials of the drug, "ZMapp," were flown into Liberia last week in a last-ditch effort to save Brantly and Writebol, according to a source familiar with details of the treatment. Doctors report "significant improvement."

August 6, 2014 - Nancy Writebol arrives at Emory in Atlanta for treatment.

August 8, 2014 - Experts at the World Health Organization declare the Ebola epidemic ravaging West Africa an international health emergency that requires a coordinated global approach, describing it as the worst outbreak in the four-decade history of tracking the disease.

August 19, 2014 - Liberia's President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf declares a nationwide curfew beginning August 20 and orders two communities to be completely quarantined, with no movement in or out of the areas.

August 21, 2014 - Dr. Kent Brantly is discharged from Emory University Hospital. It is also announced that Nancy Writebol had been released on Tuesday, August 19. The releases come after Emory staff are confident Brantly and Writebol pose "no public health threat."

September 6, 2014 - The government of Sierra Leone announces plans for a nationwide lockdown from September 19-21, in order to stop the spread of Ebola. The lockdown is being billed as a predominantly social campaign rather than a medical one, in which volunteers will go door-to-door to talk to people.

2 Ebola scares hit Sarawak
by Jonathan Chia, Wilson Kong & Raymond Tan, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on September 16, 2014, Tuesday

A Zimbabwean student, Kapit man who works in Africa now quarantined in Kuching, Sibu

KUCHING: A 24-year-old Zimbabwean student and a 26-year-old man in Sibu are now under quarantine as a precautionary measure against the deadly Ebola.

The Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus student, in an isolation ward
at the Sarawak General Hospital since Sunday, developed fever and cough after coming into contact with several Nigerian students, who had just returned here from Nigeria.

The man in Sibu, who hails from Kapit, is now quarantined at the Sibu Hospital after having
fever and nausea on Sunday. He works in a logging camp in Africa and flew back to Sibu on Sept 11.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil told a press conference yesterday that the Zimbabwean student displayed early symptoms related to the disease.

“He was referred to a private specialist hospital here on Sept 13 but because of the symptoms and because of him coming into contact with the Nigerian students, he was referred to the Sarawak General Hospital the following day.

“There is no confirmation yet, both in terms of real signs and symptoms of Ebola, so we cannot say he is suspected of having Ebola.”

The State Epidemiology Unit is analysing samples taken from the student, and it might take at least a week to get the result, he added.

As for those Nigerian students he had mingled with, Dr Jerip said they were in good health, but they were isolated at the campus for a short while for medical screenings.

“Even though they are healthy, we also screened all Nigerian students who had gone back to Nigeria and came back.”

The fatality rate from Ebola is more than 70 per cent. The virus causes high fever, severe body aches, intense weakness, muscle pain, headaches and sore throat. The tipping point is when a patient develops diarrhoea and vomits – factors that caused many fatalities.

“The moment someone had diarrhoea and vomits, that person will be dehydrated. Following diarrhoea and vomiting, the virus spreads.

“Imagine what happens when people vomits on the street. The virus will be here and there, and no matter what you do, it will spread all around. That part of it becomes very critical,” said Dr Jerip.

Despite the news, Dr Jerip said the public should not panic as the state Health Department had put in place all preventive measures.

“We want to be very sure. Even though we have this (unconfirmed) situation, we are putting ourselves in a high precautionary state.”

He advised the people to be very cautious and maintain a high level of personal hygiene

“For those who travel outside the country, please be very cautious. If you become ill in a foreign country, particularly if you know you have come into contact with someone from Africa, seek help immediately in the country you are in.”

In Sibu, Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the man from Sibu was hospitalised because his family members feared he might have the deadly Ebola.

He said the hospital had isolated him for observation purposes.

It was understood that his family members rushed him to the hospital on Sunday night, and the ambulance that took him to the hospital was immediately sterilised.

“Yes, the man came back from Africa, but not from an Ebola outbreak area. After his return, he had a fever. As a precautionary measure, his family members sent him to the hospital, and the hospital isolated him.”

Wong appealed to the people here not to stoke fear or cause panic about Sibu having the Ebola virus.

“Let the hospital do their job.”

Meanwhile, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus yesterday reminded the people, especially its students, not to share speculative rumours and innuendo, particularly on social media, about a student being hospitalised due to a suspected case of the Ebola virus.

Its Pro Vice-Chancellor and chief executive, Prof Anthony Cahalan, said such activity could cause unnecessary concern and panic to many people.

“It means that we have had to respond today to a lot of misinformation instead of ensuring that we had all the facts in hand; that our student is well looked after and is back to good health as quickly as possible,” he said in a press statement.

He made the remarks because mainstream and social media coverage yesterday reported that a student in the campus is suspected to have contracted the Ebola virus.

“One of our students was not feeling well late last night (Sunday night) and went to hospital, and it is the Ministry of Health’s protocol to follow up such symptoms in these circumstances. We are pleased to hear it is most unlikely that it is a case of Ebola.”

“The student’s health is improving and Health officials have proposed that the student be discharged from hospital. Our duty of care is to our staff and our students and situations such as these are taken very seriously by the university and the state and federal governments,” he added.

“This situation has been closely monitored by Ministry of Health officials who have been in constant contact with Student Operations staff and myself today (yesterday) on the campus at Swinburne Sarawak.”

Zimbabwe student not infected by Ebola virus
Posted on September 17, 2014, Wednesday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Zimbabwean student who was quarantined for suspected infection by Ebola virus has been confirmed not to have it, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said the finding was made after laboratory tests were done on clinical samples taken from the student yesterday at the Sungai Buloh National Public Health Laboratory (MKAK) and found to be negative for Ebola virus.

“At present, he is getting better and responding well to treatment,” he said in a statement here last night.

In this regard, Dr Noor Hisham said the Health Ministry reiterated that up till now, there had been no confirmed cases of EVD (Ebola virus disease) in Malaysia.

The Health Ministry would continue to bolster its preparedness to face any possibility of the spread of EVD in the country, he said.

“The Health Ministry through the National Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC) will monitor the situation and inform of any development,” he said.

The Zimbabwean student, 24, is being treated at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching.

Meanwhile in Sibu, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh hoped that the 26-year-old man now being isolated at Sibu Hospital for fear of Ebola infection would soon recover from a common viral infection.

When contacted Wong said the worker who had just returned from Africa was seemingly recovering. He said his fever had gone down.

“However, it is medical procedure to keep him in isolation until his condition improves. He can be discharged if he recovers and when it is confirmed he did not get the Ebola viral infection. It is possible this is not a case of Ebola infection.”

However, Wong said the case should be left to the hospital for further observation.

The timber camp worker from Kapit has moved with his family to Sibu after returning from Africa on Sept 11.

He had fever and nausea on his return.

His family rushed him to the hospital on Saturday night for fear of the dreaded viral infection.

After a check at the hospital, an ambulance sent him to an isolation room for observation.

The hospital immediately sterilised the ambulance soon after transporting him to the ward.

Wong, who is also Minister of Local Government and Community Development, has been concerned with the case and has been briefed by the hospital authority.

He called on the public to stay calm and let the hospital do its work. — Agencies

Datuk Dr S Subramaniam
Jangan keliru, simptom Ebola serupa demam denggi

- Bernama
