Princess Charlotte Makes Her First Fashion Statement

The new royal was wearing the bonnet backwards when she was introduced to the world

She’s not even a week old and Princess Charlotte is already following in her mother’s footsteps by stirring news with what designer she’s wearing.

When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Prince William and Kate Middleton appeared in public with their newborn daughter last week, the youngster was wearing a bonnet from a high-end Spanish baby goods designer Irulea, People.com reports. And apparently, the new royal was wearing the bonnet backwards.

Spanish news outlets are reporting that the buyer may be the mother of Prince George’s nanny, Maria Borrallo. But the owner, Ayajo Villar, would only tell People that the customer did not want to be “seen or noticed” and bought the artisanal bonnet in different colors because “she did not know the gender of the baby.”

GIRL ABOUT TOWN: Princess Charlotte's female bodyguard is an armed and dangerous Scotland Yard officer who carries a 9mm Glock pistol

By Charlotte Griffiths for The Mail on Sunday

Published: 23:01 GMT, 9 May 2015  | Updated: 12:46 GMT, 10 May 2015

Did the Duchess of Cambridge know she was having a girl all along? I only ask because Princess Charlotte already has a protection officer in place – and she's a woman.

Officers are selected from a pool of bodyguards from Scotland Yard's Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Group – and they must have moved remarkably quickly to pick a woman if the sex of the baby wasn't known in advance.

A female guard will make life easier for Kate and her nanny Maria – she'll be able to accompany them to places such as changing rooms.

But anyone who thinks she's easy to get past might like to know she carries a 9mm Glock pistol at all times – and is a crack shot.

Princess Charlotte's christening date announced

05 JUNE 2015

HRH Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge will be christened on Sunday 5 July, it has been confirmed. Kensington Palace announced the news a month in advance of the special occasion, writing on Twitter that Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, have opted for their little girl's baptism to take place in Sandringham – at the same church where Princess Diana was christened in August 1961.

"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to announce the christening of Princess Charlotte will take place on Sunday 5th July," read a post on the social media site. "Princess Charlotte will be christened by The Archbishop of Canterbury @JustinWelby at St Mary Magdalene Church in #Sandringham."

The service, which will take place a stone's throw from William and Kate's country home Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate, will most likely be a private affair, although the family will no doubt later release official pictures to mark the historic event.

Many royal watchers have suggested that William and Kate chose 5 July so that the christening takes place before the Queen heads to Balmoral for her annual summer holiday.

While previous royal babies, including Prince George, have been christened at three months, Charlotte will be just two months old on her special day.

The Princess's christening will also be different from her older brother's in that it will be held in Norfolk and not in London.

George's christening took place in the royal chapel at St James's Palace, whereas Prince William was baptised in the music room at Buckingham Palace in August 1982 and Prince Harry's 1984 christening was held at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

It is highly likely, however, that Charlotte will wear the same Honiton lace christening gown, modelled on the one made for Queen Victoria's daughter in 1841, that George sported in October 2013.

The original was replaced with one designed by the current monarch's dresser Angela Kelly after it became too fragile from generations of use.

Princess Charlotte's official portrait clothes: the true story

08 JUNE 2015

When Princess Charlotte starred in her first official photoshoot, the beautiful royal baby was dressed in a handmade white knitted jumper, a chemise with ruffled collar and a pair of matching tights. HELLO! Online can confirm that Charlotte's outfit came from Irulea – the same Spanish designer she wore at her first public appearance.

Contrary to some reports, Charlotte was dressed head-to-toe in Irulea and not other childrenswear brands.

"I don't know why there's confusion," said shop owner Ayago Villar, who runs the family business in the coastal city of San Sebastián with her sister Susana. She told HELLO! Online: "It's all made by us, everything is done by hand."

Just like the baby's mother the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, Charlotte already has fashionistas and royal fans rushing to copy her style.

"We've seen a surge in sales and had an undeniable amount of interest for everything that's made by hand, especially our newborn range," said Ayago.

"We've had orders from abroad – we're seeing a massive repercussion on an international scale. A lot of people have asked for copies of Princess Charlotte's clothes so we're making more. Everyone's delighted really."

Ayago only discovered that William and Kate's daughter was wearing the Spanish brand when she was flooded by calls from the media, asking if she had supplied the outfit. Prince George's Spanish nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrello had picked out the clothes before Charlotte was born and given them as a present to the Duke and Duchess.

Irulea confirmed that Charlotte was indeed wearing their clothes, writing on Facebook alongside the new photos: "We're so proud to hear that the British royal family chose to dress Princess Charlotte in Irulea. Her outfit was handmade in San Sebastián and consists of a jumper, a blouse, little boots and a bonnet."

The photos of Prince George and baby Charlotte were taken by the siblings' mum Kate

The new photos, which were released by Kensington Palace on Saturday, were taken when Charlotte was around two weeks old by her shutterbug mum Kate. The Duchess chose to get behind the camera and put all the focus on her son and daughter, instead of featuring in the snaps with her husband William.

George, who turns two in July, is already showing off the perfect big brother qualities, and was pictured cradling his baby sister and gazing down at her.

Prince Charles reveals Princess Charlotte already sleeps through the night

11 JUNE 2015

Princess Charlotte may only be six weeks old but she already sleeps through the night, Prince Charles has revealed. Speaking to guests at a Clarence House tea party on Wednesday, the Prince said his granddaughter is "much easier on her mum" than her older brother Prince George.

Charles was hosting the event with his wife the Duchess of Cornwall for pilots and aircrew from the Battle of Britain Fighter Association, who fought in the Second World War. The 66-year-old made the revelation while chatting to one invitee, who recalled the conversation to the Press Association.

"We were talking about grandchildren, he was saying Princess Charlotte does sleep through the night and it was much easier on mum than Prince George," they said.

Prince Charles revealed that Princess Charlotte sleeps through the night

It is not the first time Prince Charles has spoken fondly of the latest addition to the family. The proud grandfather described his granddaughter as "very beautiful" during a visit to the Dorset town of Poundbury just days after her birth.

Charles' revelation comes just days after the first official pictures of Princess Charlotte were released. Taken by her mother the Duchess of Cambridge, née Kate Middleton, the four adorable images show the baby Princess cuddling up to her big brother, who tenderly places a kiss on her forehead.

The pictures were taken in May at Prince William and Kate's country home Anmer Hall on the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk. The shots, which were released on social media, came just one day after it was confirmed that Princess Charlotte's christening will take place on Sunday 5 July.

The first official photos of Princess Charlotte were released on Saturday

Charlotte, whose full name is HRH Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge, will be baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham.

The church, which is located just a stone's throw from William and Kate's Norfolk home Amner Hall, is the same venue where Princess Diana was christened in August 1961.

While members of the royal family including the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla are all expected to attend, HELLO! learned earlier this week that Prince Harry is set to miss his niece's christening as he will be in Africa pursuing conservation work.

Princess Charlotte will be baptised in the Lily Font, commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. The Lily Font’s decoration represents purity & new life. It was first used at Victoria, Princess Royal’s christening.
