One of the biggest technology trade shows in the world is about to happen: the Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off this weekend and reserves a lot of surprises. The most anticipated devices of 2014 will be launched, the Galaxy S5. With Samsung’s Unpacked event at the center of the convention, the MWC returns to the world stage to showcase the newest trends on the mobile market. Below we’ve listed all the highlights that we expect from the 2014 Mobile Wold Congress.

The MWC runs from February 24th to 27th  in Barcelona, Spain and will provide a platform for key players on the mobile scene to advertise their new smartphones and tablets. And considering the recent rumors, we will be seeing the Samsung Galaxy S5, Sony Xperia Z2 and HTC One 2 (M8) become reality.

Besides these anticipated releases, the event will also be packed with new and innovative smartphones, tablets and communication technologies. If we consider what was presented during CES 2014, the trend of smartwatches and other wearable devices, it may be that many other companies will also be heading in this new direction.

Samsung

As mentioned above, Samsung has opted for a new strategy in launching their new flagship, the Galaxy S5. Instead of unpacking their new trophy at an exclusive presentation, their event is now part of the MWC and is scheduled for Monday, February 20th (16h GMT). In fact, the Galaxy S5 is not the most guarded secret in history: we now know that it will come with a fingerprint scanner and not be free of physical buttons. The device will also feature folders where applications and data can be secretly hidden.

Without wishing to belittle any other major manufacturer participating in the congress, the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be the star of the show. Next to this, Sammy could unveil the second generation of their Galaxy smartwatch Gear and perhaps even a new phone running a Microsoft OS.

In addition, we will also check out the Samsung booth at the convention center with the newly released Galaxy Note 3 Neo, a smaller version of the Note 3. With it, the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite will also be there, as announced in a press release earlier.

Sony

After introducing the Xperia Z1 during the IFA 2013 and Xperia Z1 Compact at CES 2014, Sony couldn’t possibly have any more room for another flagship, right? Wrong. Rumors are popping up on the net about a possible new high-end smartphone under the codename "Sirius".

According to the leaked specs, the smartphone will be the successor to the Xperia Z1 and will come with a 5.2-inch display, a Qualcomm MSM8974AB processor clocked at 2.3 GHz, Adreno 330 GPU, supported by 3GB RAM. It was also suggested that the device will run Android 4.4 KitKat and come with the same camera 20.7 MP as its predecessor.

But if Sony doesn’t unwrap this new toy, one thing is certain: the second generation of its 10-inch tablet will likely show its face. Apparently, the rumored tablet, codename "Castor", rumors will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, both in 4G and Wi-Fi versions.

LG

LG launched its flagship in August 2013, just in time to present it during the IFA 2013. It would therefore be somewhat rushed for the Korean manufacturer to put a new device on the G line on the market right now. However, it’s certain that we will see the LG G2 mini, announced today in a press release. The G2 mini is a strong competitor to devices like the Sony Xperia Z1 compact, HTC One mini and Galaxy S4 mini, it’s sure to go far in this competition.

Another awaited smartphone from LG will give the guys at MWC is the recently announced LG G Pro 2. With a screen of 5.9 inches and a Snapdragon processor 800, the device is a possible competitor for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Besides G Pro 2, LG will showcase its line of low and medium range devices. The new models belonging to the L Series won’t be showstoppers by any means, however will serve as entry-level devices for many Android users.

Some websites have even reported that the LG Nexus 10 tablet 2014 version, in partnership with Google, could finally show its face this year. And, as a move against the company, LG could present its very first, very own competition to Google Glass, called " GLASSTIC ".

Finally, after launching the LifeBand Touch bracelet at CES 2014, LG looks set to present a smartwatch called the LG G Arch. The wearable device seems only to be compatible with LG smartphones.

Motorola(and Lenovo)

We expect to see very little form Motorola. However, the manufacturer did promote its very own official event to take place at the convention, scheduled for Feb. 25. Initially, the event was to be led by former Motorola CEO, Dennis Woodside, who has since stepped down. As the plot thickens behind this story, we hope to get some of our questions answered about the sale of Motorola to Lenovo during the event, and whether they are ready to divulge more information will only be discovered then and there.

Google

As usual, Google won’t be a large participant at the MWC (though always lurking in the shadows of course), and as always the company has chosen to stick with their own events and already made official the next Google I/O, their annual developer conference. But of course, a part of them will be present at the convention, our favorite OS, Android. As mentioned above, it’s possible that the new generation Nexus 10 could finally make a grand entrance.

HTC

Unlike last year, when HTC chose to launch their flagship at an exclusive event, this year’s MWC could once again play the role as stage for the announcement of the HTC One 2 (are we the only ones who find the name strange?). The new flagship, currently codenamed HTC M8, is said to come with a 5-inch Full HD display and a resolution of 1080p, a Snapdragon 800 processor and would run Android 4.4.2 combined with the new HTC Sense 6.0 interface.

Our predictions show that Nokia will present a couple of new devices at the MWC, such as the Lumia 1020 and the Lumia 2520 tablet . But what draws more attention is rumored Nokia X (or Normandy), which may be the first smartphone by this manufacturer to run on the Android OS.

With regards to the specifications of this device , we already know that it will have dual-SIM support, a 4-inch display, a dual-core Snapdragon processor, ticking at 1.0 GHz with only 512 MB RAM, which is disappointing to say the least.

Huawei

Ok so, Huawei gave it all away in their teaser video released for the MWC. While we were expecting the Chinese manufacturer to come out with a Huawei Ascend P6 upgrade during the convention, the company went and launched the Huawei Ascend P6S silently in a press release. What we do know is that three new devices will come around. One is a tablet packing a heavy-duty battery and a charge that can last days, or so the company says. Another device is a smartphone whose highlights include a front camera that Huawei assures is set to impress. And finally, a multimedia tablet with 4G support.

ZTE and Tizen

ZTE seems interested in keeping up with their own tradition at the MWC: launching devices with alternate OS. Last year, the Chinese company ZTE announced the Open running on Mozilla Firefox and this year, rumors suggest they will be the ones to bring the first smartphone with Tizen, the OS from Samsung. Apparently the Tizen OS will run on the ZTE v975 Geek phone, powered by an Intel processor. Now we just have to wait to see if we finally get a glimpse of Sammy's own OS running on a mobile device.
