FA confirm Reds semi date

The FA this afternoon confirmed that Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final against either Everton or Sunderland will not be played on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

The club has never been asked to play on April 15, a day when it remembers the 96 who tragically died at our FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest in 1989.

Instead our latest trip to Wembley has been scheduled for Saturday, April 14, with the kick-off time yet to be confirmed.

The replay between Sunderland and Everton will take place at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday, March 27.

The other semi-final between either Tottenham or Bolton and Chelsea will be played on April 15.

Melwood injury update

Kenny Dalglish today confirmed Craig Bellamy is a doubt for Liverpool's trip to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday while Glen Johnson is set to miss out once more.

Bellamy has sat out the Reds' last two matches with a knock, while Johnson hasn't figured since the Carling Cup final.

Dalglish will fully assess the fitness of his squad later today ahead of the journey to Loftus Road.

The boss told reporters at Melwood: "I don't think Glen will be available and maybe not Bellers either, but we'll wait and see.

"The boys who played on Sunday haven't really trained since, so we'll see how they are this morning. They're coming in later on and we'll analyse what we've got

"It's just a niggle (with Bellamy)."

RUMORS

Arsenal and Liverpool are both interested in Udinese duo Mehdi Benatia and Mauricio Isla but could lose out to Napoli in the race for the talented duo, according to reports in Italy.

The pair have been linked with moves to the Premier League in the past, and both Arsene Wenger and Kenny Dalglish have reportedly been monitoring their progress.

And Udinese president Giampaolo Pozzo has confirmed there is interest from abroad for the talented duo, although Napoli are favourites at this stage.

"At the end of the season we will see what happens, but it is certainly true that several clubs have asked about these players," he told Radio Kiss Kiss.

Sheffield Wednesday hope to talk to Robbie Fowler, 36, over a short-term deal this week.

Wednesday manager Dave Jones wants Fowler, who failed to agree terms with Blackpool when they offered him £90 a week and £5,000 a game.

Jones is considering a deal until the end of the season.

Juan Manuel Vargas has emerged as a Liverpool transfer target, but they will face competition from Zenit St Petersburg for the Fiorentina midfielder's signature. The Peru international was linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal in January, but no deal was completed. He now looks certain to leave the Florence-based club at the end of the season and interest in him is already growing.According to reports in Italy, Liverpool are among the teams keen on the versatile 28-year-old, who can play anywhere on the left flank. However, Zenit are leading the race for his signature and it is believed his representatives have already held talks with the Russian club.Zenit asked about Vargas's availability in the winter transfer window, as they looked to add some attacking flair to their midfield. In the end they were unable to agree a deal for the former Catania man and instead opted to sign Andrey Arshavin on loan from Arsenal until July.

Suarez: Cups bode well for 2012-13

Luis Suarez believes reaching two finals in one season would send a message to the rest of the Barclays Premier League about Liverpool's potential next season.

The Reds already have the Carling Cup in the cabinet, and following Sunday's 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Stoke in which Suarez scored a wonderful goal, they are now just two victories away from an historic double.

And the Uruguayan - who spoke on Monday about his happiness at Anfield - told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I think after such a long period, to get to two finals in one season would be great for the club, a real positive.

"It would show just how the team are getting used to the manager's system and style of play, as well as how well the new arrivals have settled into the side. That's a good sign for next season too.

"It would be something really special. To be just a season and a half with a club and win two medals would be great. It's just a case of trying to keep calm and collected, and waiting for the game to come around.

"If we get the chance to win it, then we can enjoy it, because winning trophies is never easy, especially here in England."

Suarez is excited about the prospect of playing a semi-final at Wembley within two months of our penalty shoot-out triumph over Cardiff City, but he is keen to stress the importance of not losing focus on the league.

And while accepting that Champions League qualification will be difficult, he is not conceding hope.

"It's a great feeling because it's a superb stadium and always a great spectacle for everyone who loves their football," said the 25-year-old.

"Going back there with Liverpool to play in a semi-final is going to be a great occasion but we first of all have to concentrate on the important league games coming up before we begin to think about Wembley.

"Things have become difficult to grab a place in the Champions League but we will keep battling hard right until the end of the season and try to give a good account of ourselves."

Liverpool will face the winner of the quarter-final replay between Everton and Sunderland - with the game likely to be played on April 14.

The possibility of an all-Merseyside semi-final has created a buzz in the city, but Suarez is calm about whoever the opponents turn out to be.

"It doesn't matter," he said. "A semi-final is a semi-final and we will be fighting like our lives depended on it against either of the two teams.

"Yes, a derby game, and at Wembley, would be special, but they still have a replay to come. Whoever wins, we'll be waiting calmly for them."

Liverpool Plotting Move to Snap Up Bundesliga Talent Who Has Impressed During Swansea City Loan Spell

Liverpool are reportedly readying a move to snap up Hoffenheim striker Gylfi Sigurdsson who under the noses of Swansea City, where the Icelandic international is currently enjoying a successful loan spell. The attacking midfielder has caught the eye of Anfield’s director of football Damien Comolli and the Merseyside club are said to be considering a summer bid for the former Reading man.

Sigurdsson impressed during his first season at Hoffenheim, notching up 10 goals and being voted player of the season, however boss Holger Stanislawski didn’t appear to value the powerfully built 22 year old and opted to accept a loan deal from the Welsh side.

Hoffenheim have since sacked Stanislawski and it is not yet known whether new manager Markus Babbel has any intention of welcoming Gylfi Sigurdsson back to the fold in the summer when his loan spell at the Liberty Stadium comes to an end.

Brendan Rodgers has used the Icelandic man in an advanced central midfield role behind his striking options and has seen Sigurdsson take to life in the Premier League with aplomb, netting five goals in eight starts and linking midfield to attack expertly.

Given that Liverpool sold Dutch winger Ryan Babel to the Bundesliga side they may feel they could have the upper hand when it comes to negotiating a deal to snap up the talented youngster who could well be tempted by a move to the club, especially as they have European football to offer the goal-scoring midfielder.

Liverpool have found goals hard to come by this season and have lacked goals from their midfield. Jordan Henderson has struggled to make an impact and whilst Charlie Adam has been effective in spells he has seemingly lost the goal scoring touch he possessed at Blackpool, managing just two goals in 30 matches this season.

Comolli may see Sigurdsson as a player for the future who is clearly able to make an impact in the English top tier in the present and with the potential to prove a very wise purchase.

Liverpool Plan ‘Spanish Messi’ Bid as Kenny Dalglish Chases La Liga Pair

French source Mercato claim that Liverpool are eyeing up impressive young Athletic Bilbao pair Javi Martinez and Iker Muniain in what would be a stunning swoop by the Merseyside club.

The Spanish duo were particularly impressive during their sides excellent victories over Man United, both at home and at Old Trafford, and this has led to even more speculation about the futures of the Spanish international pair who are likely to figure in Vicente del Bosque’s Euro 2012 squad.

Talented teenager Muniain has been dubbed the ‘Spanish Messi’ and whilst such comparisons are fairly unhelpful and can lead to putting a curse on a player’s chances of making the grade, the 19 year old Athletic Bilbao attacker is definitely a player with a great deal of potential.

The pint sized Pamplona born starlet can play either out wide or as a support striker and has already amassed over 100 top tier appearances and could well be tempted by a move away from San Mames.

Javi Martinez is a robust midfielder who is as comfortable in the tackle as he is going forward and the 6ft 3in maestro would suit the physical nature of the Premier League so it’s no surprise that Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish may be keen on adding more steel to his Anfield with a possible bid brewing for the 23 year old.

Liverpool have struggled to effectively replace their in-form Brazilian enforcer Lucas Leiva and youngster Jay Spearing has failed to consistently fill the void so a move for Martinez could help add strength in depth but can also operate in a more attack minded role if necessary.

Though Liverpool forked out over £100m on new players over the past 18 months Dalglish will still be looking to bring in quality additions to further their push for a place back in the Premier League top four as they look set to make it three seasons in succession without a Champions League berth.
