Shevchenko to leave Chelsea

Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko has decided to leave the club.
Ancelotti revealed Shevchenko had decided to move on because there was no guarantee of first-team football at Stamford Bridge.
He said: "I spoke with Shevchenko. He would like to play with continuity here for me but it is difficult for me to give him the possibility to play a lot of matches and he will take the right decision for him. We have told him he can go."
The Italian coach also rejected fresh speculation that the Blues had made a £57million bid for Bayern Munich midfielder Franck Ribery.

Abramovich keen to stop big-spending City

Chelsea's billionaire owner Roman Abramovich is backing a UEFA proposal that would scupper the efforts of big-spending Manchester City to dominate English and European football.

Roman Abramovich: Spent £700m

Abramovich, who has spent approximately £700m on transforming the Blues into one of football's big hitters over the last six years, has been named by UEFA president Michel Platini as one of the key agitators behind his proposal to limit football clubs' spending power.

City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who bought the Premier League club in September 2008, has spent £120m in this transfer window alone and it would appear that Abramovich would support an initiative to prevent City from following the very same route that he used to make the Blues a football powerhouse.

• Comment: Football fat cats wallow in hypocrisy

The Russian is backing Platini's plan that proposes clubs can only spend what they earn in football revenues and that any club which does not balance the books in the next three years could be kicked out of European competitions.

The UEFA chief said: "It's mainly the owners that asked us to do something: Roman Abramovich, Silvio Berlusconi [Milan] , Massimo Moratti [Internazionale]. They do not want to fork out any more.

"Manchester City can spend £300m if they want to but if they are not breaking even in three years then they cannot play in European competition. I haven't spoken to Manchester City about this and I don't remember meeting their owner, but I'm sure I will. Roman Abramovich is a football person and passionate about the game. He loves football. He has come to me and said that we must do something about this."

"It doesn't matter if one team doesn't agree, because this is what the clubs want."

Chelsea limited spending to £23m in the transfer window this summer as Abramovich felt the effects of the global credit crunch.

Chelsea striker Shevchenko completes Kiev return

Andriy Shevchenko has ended his unproductive three-year stay at Chelsea by returning to Dynamo Kiev, the club that first made him one of Europe's most feared strikers.

Carlo Ancelotti announced on Friday that Shevchenko had expressed a desire to leave Stamford Bridge and the striker, who turned 33 on Saturday, has now signed a two-year deal in the Ukrainian capital.

Shevchenko joined Chelsea for a then British record of £30m in the summer of 2006 but never settled in West London and scored only nine goals in 48 Premier League appearances for the club.

A loan spell with Milan last season - the club where he spent seven glorious years before moving to London - was similarly disappointing and Ancelotti could not find room for the striker in his side after also making the journey to Stamford Bridge.

Shevchenko will now be hoping that another return to familiar surroundings will help rejuvenate his career as he rejoins his first club in professional football.

The striker burst onto the scene at Dynamo and won five consecutive league titles before his exploits on the Champions League scene earned him an £18.7m move to Serie A in 1999.
