Mysterious flood strikes North Vietnam
http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/mysterious-flood-strikes-north-vietnam

A severe flood of the Red River in North Vietnam kills an estimated 100,000 people on this day in 1971. This remarkable flood was one of the century's most serious weather events, but because the Vietnam War was going on at the time, relatively few details about the disaster are available.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) compiled a list of the 20th century's top weather and climate events, based upon their natural wonder and impact on people. On the list were such major disasters as the Bangladesh cyclones of 1970 and 1991, both of which killed more than 100,000 people. The "Great Smog of London" of 1952 and the 1972 blizzard in Iran also made the list. Notably, not a single incident occurring in North American was included.

The Red River flood in North Vietnam made NOOA's list even though relatively little is known about how or why approximately 100,000 people perished in the disaster. During the Vietnam War, information from North Vietnam was neither plentiful nor reliably accurate. What is known is that the Red River, which runs near the capital city of Hanoi, experienced a "250-year" flood. Torrential rains simply overwhelmed the dyke system around the heavily populated delta area, which is not far above sea level. As well as directly killing thousands of people, the flood also wiped out valuable crops, causing further hardship, especially as it occurred during wartime.

Though many more reservoirs have since been built in the Hanoi region, the area remains vulnerable to flooding.

2004 - In Paraguay, at least 426 people were killed and over 500 were injured in a fire at a supermarket. About 150 were reported missing after the fire. Doors had been locked to prevent stealing.

Paraguay mall inferno kills at least 283
August 2, 2004 - 2:24PM
At least 283 people were killed and hundreds more injured when a deadly fire raced through a shopping center on the outskirts of the Paraguayan capital early Sunday, police said.
Firefighters believe the blaze may have been ignited by a spark hitting an industrial-sized propane gas tank in the food court.
The blaze consumed a significant part of a supermarket within the shopping complex, which also houses offices and a parking garage. Officials worried the 30-metre-high (98-foot) complex might collapse.
Witnesses said that in the chaos that ensued they heard several explosions. Officials said the fire had likely been sparked by gas canisters that subsequently ignited.
National police spokesman Santiago Velazco said searchers were expected to discover more victims inside the burned-out building.
"Recovery teams are working slowly and cautiously as they retrieve the bodies," Velazco said.
The toll was especially high because shopping center security personnel locked the main doors to prevent customers from fleeing without first paying.

Prosecutor Edgar Sanchez, in charge of investigating the blaze, told reporters that shopping center owner Juan Pio Paiva will be charged with homicide for blocking the doors. Paiva surrendered to the authorities, but categorically denied any order to close the complex's doors.

One survivor, Rosa Resquin, said she heard someone shouting "close them, close them!" and "no one gets out of here without paying." "When they arrived, the police and firemen opened the doors, but it was already too late," she told reporters.Patricia Benitez, 17, who was being treated at a hospital for second-degree burns, said, "they closed the door in our face."
"(People) broke the exit door from outside and then we were able to get out," Benitez told AFP.
"Most people died of smoke inhalation. Burns might have occurred later," said volunteer firefighters Captain Hugo Onieva. "If they had let them out it wouldn't have happened."

Volunteer firefighter spokesman Roque Gonzalez told AFP that shopping center security personnel even shot at firefighters when they attempted to force open the main door.

Gonzalez also dismissed speculation that the fire was set off by a car bomb in the basement parking lot.
A police spokesman said the death toll could reach 300.
"There are between 250 and 300 dead," said police commissioner Santiago Velazco. "There could easily be 300 dead. They have not removed all of the bodies. It's a disaster."

Store owner charged over Paraguay blaze
August 4, 2004 - 9:15AM

A judge has filed involuntary manslaughter charges against the owner of a supermarket that caught fire in Paraguay, killing more than 450 weekend shoppers, local media reported.

The decision by Judge Pedro Dario Portillo, broadcast by TV station Channel 13, came after authorities said a security guard told them the doors were ordered locked to prevent looting after the Sunday blaze broke out.

Judicial officials had no immediate comment on the indictment of supermarket owner Juan Pio Paiva, who Channel 13 said had been moved to the Tacumbu penitentiary just west of Asuncion, the capital.

Meanwhile four-month-old baby boy Enzo Bobadilla, whose life was saved when police officer Juan Duarte pulled him from the smouldering rubble of the supermarket on Sunday, has been discharged from hospital.

Duarte applied mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Enzo after rescuing him.

Earlier today, authorities said the toll soared to 464 dead and 409 people remained hospitalised with burns and other injuries.

Dozens of families were still searching for lost loved ones as investigators questioned the store's two owners, a manager and four security guards over whether the doors had been ordered locked to stop people from leaving without paying - allegedly trapping shoppers inside.

Juan Pio Paiva, left co-owner of Ycua Bolanos Supermarket, walks into the Justice Palace, escorted by a police officer, right, in Asuncion, Paraguay on Tuesday, August 3, 2004. Paiva is under investigation after a security guard told investigators he received orders to lock the building's doors just after the blaze began to prevent theft, officials said. [AP]

2 Ogos 1934.

ADOLF HITLER dengan rasminya menjadi Fuhrer @ "Leader" kepada kerajaan Diktator Jerman.

With the death of German President Paul von Hindenburg, Chancellor Adolf Hitler becomes absolute dictator of Germany under the title of Fuhrer, or "Leader." The German army took an oath of allegiance to its new commander-in-chief, and the last remnants of Germany's democratic government were dismantled to make way for Hitler's Third Reich. The Fuhrer assured his people that the Third Reich would last for a thousand years, but Nazi Germany collapsed just 11 years later.

Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, in 1889. As a young man he aspired to be a painter, but he received little public recognition and lived in poverty in Vienna. Of German descent, he came to detest Austria as a "patchwork nation" of various ethnic groups, and in 1913 he moved to the German city of Munich in the state of Bavaria. After a year of drifting, he found direction as a German soldier in World War I, and was decorated for his bravery on the battlefield. He was in a military hospital in 1918, recovering from a mustard gas attack that left him temporarily blind, when Germany surrendered.

He was appalled by Germany's defeat, which he blamed on "enemies within"--chiefly German communists and Jews--and was enraged by the punitive peace settlement forced on Germany by the victorious Allies. He remained in the German army after the war, and as an intelligence agent was ordered to report on subversive activities in Munich's political parties. It was in this capacity that he joined the tiny German Workers' Party, made up of embittered army veterans, as the group's seventh member. Hitler was put in charge of the party's propaganda, and in 1920 he assumed leadership of the organization, changing its name to Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (National Socialist German Workers' party), which was abbreviated to Nazi.

The party's socialist orientation was little more than a ploy to attract working-class support; in fact, Hitler was fiercely right-wing. But the economic views of the party were overshadowed by the Nazis' fervent nationalism, which blamed Jews, communists, the Treaty of Versailles, and Germany's ineffectual democratic government for the country's devastated economy. In the early 1920s, the ranks of Hitler's Bavarian-based Nazi party swelled with resentful Germans. A paramilitary organization, the Sturmabteilung (SA), was formed to protect the Nazis and intimidate their political opponents, and the party adopted the ancient symbol of the swastika as its emblem.

In November 1923, after the German government resumed the payment of war reparations to Britain and France, the Nazis launched the "Beer Hall Putsch"--an attempt at seizing the German government by force. Hitler hoped that his nationalist revolution in Bavaria would spread to the dissatisfied German army, which in turn would bring down the government in Berlin. However, the uprising was immediately suppressed, and Hitler was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for treason.

Imprisoned in Landsberg fortress, he spent his time there dictating his autobiography, Mein Kampf (My Struggle), a bitter and rambling narrative in which he sharpened his anti-Semitic and anti-Marxist beliefs and laid out his plans for Nazi conquest. In the work, published in a series of volumes, he developed his concept of the Fuhrer as an absolute dictator who would bring unity to German people and lead the "Aryan race" to world supremacy.

Political pressure from the Nazis forced the Bavarian government to commute Hitler's sentence, and he was released after nine months. However, Hitler emerged to find his party disintegrated. An upturn in the economy further reduced popular support of the party, and for several years Hitler was forbidden to make speeches in Bavaria and elsewhere in Germany.

The onset of the Great Depression in 1929 brought a new opportunity for the Nazis to solidify their power. Hitler and his followers set about reorganizing the party as a fanatical mass movement, and won financial backing from business leaders, for whom the Nazis promised an end to labor agitation. In the 1930 election, the Nazis won six million votes, making the party the second largest in Germany. Two years later, Hitler challenged Paul von Hindenburg for the presidency, but the 84-year-old president defeated Hitler with the support of an anti-Nazi coalition.

Although the Nazis suffered a decline in votes during the November 1932 election, Hindenburg agreed to make Hitler chancellor in January 1933, hoping that Hitler could be brought to heel as a member of his cabinet. However, Hindenburg underestimated Hitler's political audacity, and one of the new chancellor's first acts was to exploit the burning of the Reichstag (parliament) building as a pretext for calling general elections. The police under Nazi Hermann Goering suppressed much of the party's opposition before the election, and the Nazis won a bare majority. Shortly after, Hitler took on dictatorial power through the Enabling Acts.

Chancellor Hitler immediately set about arresting and executing political opponents, and even purged the Nazis' own SA paramilitary organization in a successful effort to win support from the German army. With the death of President Hindenburg on August 2, 1934, Hitler united the chancellorship and presidency under the new title of Fuhrer. As the economy improved, popular support for Hitler's regime became strong, and a cult of Fuhrer worship was propagated by Hitler's capable propagandists.

German remilitarization and state-sanctioned anti-Semitism drew criticism from abroad, but the foreign powers failed to stem the rise of Nazi Germany. In 1938, Hitler implemented his plans for world domination with the annexation of Austria, and in 1939 Germany seized all of Czechoslovakia. Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939, finally led to war with Germany and France. In the opening years of World War II, Hitler's war machine won a series of stunning victories, conquering the great part of continental Europe. However, the tide turned in 1942 during Germany's disastrous invasion of the USSR.

By early 1945, the British and Americans were closing in on Germany from the west, the Soviets from the east, and Hitler was holed up in a bunker under the chancellery in Berlin awaiting defeat. On April 30, with the Soviets less than a mile from his headquarters, Hitler committed suicide with Eva Braun, his mistress whom he married the night before.

Hitler left Germany devastated and at the mercy of the Allies, who divided the country and made it a major battlefield of Cold War conflict. His regime exterminated nearly six millions Jews and an estimated 250,000 Gypsies in the Holocaust, and an indeterminable number of Slavs, political dissidents, disabled persons, homosexuals, and others deemed unacceptable by the Nazi regime were systematically eliminated. The war Hitler unleashed upon Europe took even more lives--close to 20 million people killed in the USSR alone. Adolf Hitler is reviled as one of history's greatest villains.

President Hindenburg died on August 2nd 1934. Hitler had already agreed with the Cabinet that upon Hindenburg's death the offices of President and Chancellor would be combined. The last wishes of Hindenburg were that upon his death the monarchy should be restored. Hitler managed to suppress these wishes and did not publish the President's will. Having already ensured the support of the Army, Hitler went a step further by making the whole of the armed forces swear an oath of loyalty to him personally. A plebiscite was then held for the public to decide on whether they approved of the changes already made - 90% of voters gave their approval. Thus Hitler had become "Fuehrer and Reich Chancellor" and the title of President was then abolished.

Japan 1945 Japan Nuclear bomb Hiroshima 6th Aug. 1945 : An atomic bomb was used containing more power than 12,000 tons of TNT and producing more than 2,000 times the blast of the most powerful bomb ever dropped before was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, killing an estimated 140,000 people in the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare. The bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" with 130 pounds of uranium-235 produced the equivalent to about 13 kilotons of TNT. On August 9, 1945, America dropped the second Atom bomb on Nagasaki effectively ending the war when Japan announced their surrender.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki

1945: US drops atomic bomb on Hiroshima
The first atomic bomb has been dropped by a United States aircraft on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
President Harry S Truman, announcing the news from the cruiser, USS Augusta, in the mid-Atlantic, said the device was more than 2,000 times more powerful than the largest bomb used to date.

An accurate assessment of the damage caused has so far been impossible due to a huge cloud of impenetrable dust covering the target. Hiroshima is one of the chief supply depots for the Japanese army.

The bomb was dropped from an American B-29 Superfortress, known as Enola Gay, at 0815 local time. The plane's crew say they saw a column of smoke rising and intense fires springing up.

We found the Japanese in our locality were not eager to befriend us - after all, they had not long ago had the most fearful weapon of all time dropped on their doorstep

People's War memories »
The President said the atomic bomb heralded the "harnessing of the basic power of the universe". It also marked a victory over the Germans in the race to be first to develop a weapon using atomic energy.

President Truman went on to warn the Japanese the Allies would completely destroy their capacity to make war.

The Potsdam declaration issued 10 days ago, which called for the unconditional surrender of Japan, was a last chance for the country to avoid utter destruction, the President said.

"If they do not now accept our terms they may expect a rain of ruin from the air the like of which has never been seen on Earth. Behind this air attack will follow by sea and land forces in such number and power as they have not yet seen, but with fighting skill of which they are already aware."

The British Prime Minister Clement Attlee, who has replaced Winston Churchill at Number 10, read out a statement prepared by his predecessor to MPs in the Commons.

It said the atomic project had such great potential the government felt it was right to pursue the research and to pool information with atomic scientists in the US.

As Britain was considered within easy reach of Germany and its bombers, the decision was made to set up the bomb-making plants in the US.

The statement continued: "By God's mercy, Britain and American science outpaced all German efforts. These were on a considerable scale, but far behind. The possession of these powers by the Germans at any time might have altered the result of the war."

Mr Churchill's statement said considerable efforts had been made to disrupt German progress - including attacks on plants making constituent parts of the bomb.

He ended: "We must indeed pray that these awful agencies will be made to conduce peace among the nations and that instead of wreaking measureless havoc upon the entire globe they become a perennial fountain of world prosperity."
