Kehadiran Koller buat Jerman resah

Friendships put aside as Czechs face Germans

PRAGUE, March 22 (Reuters) - The Czech Republic face Germany on Saturday in a top-of-the-table Group D European qualifying clash featuring two goalkeepers desperate to stop their club mates from scoring.

Chelea's Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech will come up against his London club mate Michael Ballack, the German skipper, while German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann will be trying to thwart his Arsenal club mate Tomas Rosicky from scoring for the Czechs.

Five of the likely Czech starting line-up have Bundesliga experience and there are close ties all over the pitch in a match between the neighbouring countries who both have 10 points from their opening four matches.

Rosicky used to room with German Christoph Metzelder when they were at Borussia Dortmund together, while Hamburg SV team mates David Jarolim and Piotr Trochowski will face each other too.

Cech, for one, is eager for his side to win so he can end one of the few personal losing streaks he has had to suffer in his recent career.

'I have played the Germans three times and always lost. I believe the card could finally start turning now,' he says.

Cech, now fit again after recovering from a fractured skull suffered last October, did not play in the Czechs' 2-1 victory over Germany at the 2004 European championship and will need to be at his best as the Czechs have failed to keep a clean sheet against Germany in their last 22 matches.

Coach Karel Brueckner may opt for a 4-5-1 formation to disrupt Germany's offensive midfield, with just Jan Koller up front.

Koller, another former Borussia Dortmund player, will rely on a supply of balls from Rosicky, his former Borussia team mate, while Milan Baros is likely to start on the bench and try to repeat his 2004 trick when he scored the winner as a second half substitute against Germany in Euro 2004.

'If there is any weak point in the German team, it could be the defence where they miss right back Arne Friedrich,' said defensive midfielder Tomas Galasek, who plays in Germany for Nuremberg.

Germany have a problem up front as Miroslav Klose, the top scorer in last year's World Cup, is suspended.

Mario Gomez, who leads the scoring charts in the Bundesliga with 13 goals and would have been an ideal replacement, is also ruled out because of injury.

That leaves Lukas Podolski and Kevin Kuranyi, who have 37 international goals between them, as the likely strike partnership, with up-and-coming forwards like Stefan Kiessling, Jan Schlaudraff and Trochowski waiting for chances from the bench.

In defence, Germany will hope that tall centre-backs Per Mertesacker and Christoph Metzelder can keep Koller quiet.

'It's enormously important that we treat Koller with caution,' coach Joachim Loew said before the squad left for Prague.

'Not every side you come against has a player like him. He wins a lot of free kicks, he's very strong in the air and he links up well with his colleagues.'

Probable teams:

Czech Republic: Petr Cech; Tomas Ujfalusi, Martin Jiranek, David Rozehnal, Marek Jankulovski; Libor Sionko, Tomas Galasek, Tomas Rosicky, Jan Polak, Jaroslav Plasil or Milan Baros; Jan Koller.

Germany: Jens Lehmann; Philipp Lahm, Per Mertesacker, Christoph Metzelder, Marcell Jansen; Bernd Schneider, Torsten Frings, Michael Ballack, Bastian Schweinsteiger; Kevin Kuranyi, Lukas Podolski.

Referee: Roberto Rosetti (Italy)

Czech Republic 1-2 Germany: Kuranyi headed braceReuters

PRAGUE, March 24 (Reuters) - Two Kevin Kuranyi headers gave Germany a 2-1 win over Czech Republic in a Euro 2008 qualifier on Saturday to move three points clear at the top of Group D.

Germany have 13 points ahead of the Czechs after five matches with Ireland also on 10 points having played a game more following their 1-0 win over Wales earlier on Saturday.

The Czechs had the first chance but the Germans gradually built up the pressure and in the 42nd minute Kuranyi shrugged off two defenders to head a corner past goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Czech striker Milan Baros had early chances in the second half but headed two Tomas Ujfalusi crosses over before Kuranyi put Germany 2-0 ahead in the 62nd from a Philipp Lahm centre.

Baros scored a lucky goal in the 76th minute, deflecting in a shot by Jan Polak on the edge of the box, to give the home side hope but despite several chances they could not equalise

Czech players fined after enjoying hotel party

PRAGUE, March 26 (Reuters) - Czech soccer officials have fined the national team one million crowns ($47,530) for throwing a party until the early hours of Sunday, after they had lost to Germany in a Euro 2008 qualifier.

The Czech Soccer Union said the players had been celebrating the 29th birthday
of Fiorentina defender Tomas Ujfalusi.

'Because the celebration was conducted in an inappropriate way, which does not fall in line with the behaviour of Czech Republic national team members, the whole team was punished by a one-million-crown fine,' the union said in a statement.

Coach Karel Brueckner was quoted by news agency CTK as saying it was the worst disciplinary offence he had experienced and that it briefly made him consider resigning.

Tabloid daily Sip reported on Monday that Ujfalusi, captain Tomas Rosicky, Jan Polak, Martin Jiranek and Marek Cech had held a party in a room at the Praha hotel until at least 5.30 a.m..

The players, who will share the cost of the fine among the whole team, admitted having a late party.

The Czechs lost 2-1 to Germany on Saturday after a weak performance that sparked wide criticism of the team and Brueckner.

They next meet Cyprus on Wednesday in the northern Czech town of Liberec.

Czechs look to bounce back in Group D

Czech Republic go into their game against Cyprus on Wednesday looking to get their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign back on track after Saturday's disappointing home defeat to Germany.

Karel Bruckner's side know nothing less than a win will do if they are to stay in touch with Germany at the top of Group D.

With the Germans not in qualifying action in midweek, victory for Czech Republic would move them level on points with the pacesetters, having played a game more.

Although still on course for qualification, Saturday's 2-1 loss and the Republic of Ireland's 1-0 win over Wales mean Czech Republic have been joined on 10 points by Steve Staunton's men.

Bruckner had harsh words for his team's defensive performance after the defeat and has promised to make changes to the side for Wednesday's game.

'We'll use players who have more strength,' he said. 'We must impose our style of play on Cyprus, but this isn't a solid plan yet. I don't want to act rashly.

'We weren't able to prevent fast moves on the left side against Germany and had big problems there, like we did in the centre of defence. You can't win if you don't defend well, and against such strong opposition every hesitation costs you.'

Their opponents Cyprus, who arrived in Prague on Sunday, also head into the game on the back of a home defeat after going down 3-1 to Slovakia.

Striker Yiannis Okkas will be eligible to play, after missing Saturday's game through suspension, but goalkeeper Michael Morphis, who was sent off against Slovakia, is unavailable.

Elsewhere in the group, Ireland take on Slovakia looking to maintain their 100% record at Croke Park. Both sides are still in with a chance of qualification, but know they can not afford to lose any more ground on the top two.

Wales, whose qualifying hopes are already all but over, will be hoping for their second win of the qualifying campaign when they come up against group whipping boys San Marino

Czech Republic 1-0 Cyprus: Czechs scrape home

LIBEREC, Czech Republic, March 28 (Reuters) - The Czech Republic barely made up for Saturday's home loss to Germany and a controversial party that night when they struggled to beat modest Cyprus 1-0 in a Euro 2008 qualifier on Wednesday.

The Czechs remain second in Group D, level on points with the Germans, but their narrow home victory and unsteady defending did little to dispel doubts about the strength of the Euro 2004 semi-finalists.

Defender Radoslav Kovac headed the only goal from a corner in the 20th minute. The goal was originally attributed to striker Jan Koller but an official correction was announced.

The Czechs had a number of opportunities but lacked precision while Cyprus had some good chances in the second half.

Efstathios Aloneftis shot just wide of the left post from inside the box in the 67th minute, Ioannis Okkas sent the ball over the bar when he was alone in front of Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 71st, and he missed again from close range seven minutes from time.

The Czechs' deserved 2-1 defeat by Germany on Saturday was followed by a controversial party that went on into the early hours of Sunday and earned the team a one million crown ($47,640) fine from the country's Football Union.

Wales 0-0 Czech Republic: Au revoir RyanPA

Ryan Giggs tried everything he knew to fashion an unlikely Wales win on his farewell to international football.

Ryan Giggs shows the way in his last game for his country. The skipper produced a display, particularly in the second period, that might just have further damaged the Czechs' chances of qualifying for next summer's Euro 2008 finals.
One brilliant solo run had 30,000-plus fans on their feet, but the great man just failed to add the final, poetic touch.
The day had started with yet another predictable Robbie Savage rant in the media.
He accused Wales of being a shambles under John Toshack and successfully stole some of Giggs' thunder on his final day with the Wales squad.

But it did not take the full gloss from Giggs. Wales may now have no chance of qualifying, but the young side that the Manchester United man skippered for the last time produced by far their best display in this group.

Young Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey was drafted into his first competitive Wales match, having won his first cap when he played 45 minutes of last weekend's friendly with New Zealand due to Danny Coyne's knee injury.

Toshack used more youngsters, with Lewin Nyatanga and Joe Ledley in a defence that he knew would be under intense pressure from the likes of Milan Baros and Jan Koller.

The Czechs were near to full strength for this Euro 2008 Group D qualifier, with skipper Tomas Rosicky back after five weeks out with a muscle problem.

The fear around the Millennium Stadium was that Wales, 75th in the world, against the 10th best side according to FIFA was a mis-match.

And the Czechs soon settled into their effective, organised style - dangerous at every set-piece and with Arsenal's Rosicky controlling the possession.

Wales, though, were bright and keen to attack.

One neat pass from Jason Koumas was scooped off the waiting Craig Bellamy's toes in the six-yard box by Newcastle target David Rozenhal early on, while Giggs curled a 13th minute free-kick just over Petr Cech's bar.

But when the Czechs constructed quick, accurate passing moves through the middle, Koller and former Liverpool striker Baros were always a threat.

Rosicky was just wide with a side-footed effort from 18 yards, as the Czechs were constantly given far too much time work themselves into good position.

James Collins charged down a Koller effort but the ball still kept coming back at Wales' defence.

Koumas, Craig Bellamy and Giggs worked a productive triangle at times, and it looked like being down to this trio to create something before the players at the back cracked.

The Czechs retained possession well and Jan Polak was allowed to venture forward some 30 yards before firing a drive over.

Giggs, with a clever reverse pass, put Simon Davies into the box on the right with a shooting angle, but the Fulham man did not react quickly enough and the gap was soon closed.

Wales clearances consistently fell to grateful Czechs and the pressure continued to mount.

Hennessey produced a fine diving save to his left to turn away a Rosicky 25-yarder.

Davies, Bellamy and Koumas combined well on 42 minutes to allow the West Brom man to force Cech into his first genuine save of the game, down to his right to touch the bouncing effort wide.

Almost from the restart Giggs got to the line and pulled the ball back for Bellamy, but the striker was swamped by defenders and he could not wriggle his way into a shooting position.

But the Czechs' response was a cross for Koller, nodded on for Rosicky, with Sam Ricketts' saving header averting a dangerous situation. Then Wales almost took the lead.

A foul by Kovac on Koumas on 50 minutes produced a 30-yard free-kick which the midfielder curled against the bar.

The Czechs sent on David Jarolin for defender Jan Polak on 65 minutes, while Rosicky saw a free-kick blocked by the wall.

The visitors were showing their frustration at not getting a clear opening or breaching the Collins-Gabbidon back line.

Koumas had a shot saved by Cech before Giggs set off on a stunning, weaving 50-yard run.

He got past four defenders and found the angle for a blistering shot from 15 yards.

Cech could only parry it into the air before defenders got back to clear. A magic moment to remind everyone just what Wales will now be missing.

Hennessey saved a close-range effort well after Jaroslav Plasil had put substitute Marek Kulic clear, as the game opened up.

There was confidence about Wales now, with Giggs intent on giving everything in the final minutes of his international career.

He was popping up all over the place, racing down the left and looking for the one chance to punish the Czechs.

Koumas fired just over from a Giggs free-kick and Collins then headed over from a Giggs corner.

The Czechs then sent on Marek Matejovsky for Tomas Sivok. Then, on 85 minutes, Koumas and Giggs combined to almost send Bellamy clear, the final chip being just too strong.

With a minute to go, Giggs was taken off to allow him a hero's exit, with Robert Earnshaw taking over.

The skipper waved and applauded all sides of the stadium and gave the armband to Bellamy as a new era started.
