Bidding for EPL?
The Edge Weekly cited sources as saying that TM is considering bidding for the rights to the English
Premier League (EPL) broadcast for the 2010-2013 season. The rights will reportedly be up for grabs in
2H2009.
COMMENTS
An expensive game. We will not be surprised if TM eventually puts up a bid for the rights to the EPL
considering the strong affinity and popularity of football among Malaysians and which could also enhace
its content proposition significantly for the impending launch of IPTV service come year-end. That said,
TM would be in for a tough fight with the country抯 sole pay-tv operator, Astro possibly defending its
rights to the broadcast at any cost. While the cost of the broadcasting rights are typically not disclosed,
it accounts for a substantial portion of Astro抯 content cost of about RM700-RM800m per annum (35%
of pay-tv revenue).
JVs with content aggregators make more sense. While TM does have a deep enough pocket to play
the content game, we think it may not want to pursue this route for lack of a direct experience in
managing content and would rather work alongside the many content providers, both locally and
overseas who have expressed keen interests to be part of the TM抯 commercial rollout of IP-TV. As part
of the on-going IPTV trials in selected parts of the country, TM leverages on content provided by Now
TV, the popular IPTV offshoot of Hong Kong based fixed line provider, PCCW. TM Net抯 CEO, Jeremy
Kung, which had previously served on Star TV and was part of the initial team that developed Now TV
was roped in last year to led TM抯 migration into triple play services. |
