Rival bidders look to seal £100m West Ham deal

West Ham's Icelandic owners look set to sell the club by the end of the month, with at least two rival bidders "at an advanced stage of the due diligence process".

A source familiar with the situation added that "negotiations are ongoing with more than one group" but said "things could be wrapped up within seven to 10 days".

One bidding group comprises the former Birmingham City owners, David Sullivan and David Gold. A second bid is from a London finance company, Intermarket. It has also been suggested in banking circles that a third bid could yet emerge from Tony Fernandes, the Malaysian businessman behind Air Asia, former sponsors of Manchester United. Fernandes himself said last month that no bid is planned.

West Ham's chairman, Andrew Bernhardt, has consistently claimed that the company which owns the Hammers, CB Holding, does not need to sell, and there is a sustainable business plan if it doesn't sell.

Other sources say the dire financial situation could force the sales of players this month to balance the books unless the club is sold or fresh capital is otherwise injected.

It would make sense for CB Holding to get out now for business reasons if they think there is any possibility of the club being relegated. It is obvious the firm has no capital to invest, or no will to invest any, and if West Ham go down, an asset worth millions in the Premier League would become a liability in danger of administration, little better than a write-off.

Sullivan and Gold want 50 per cent of West Ham – and a guarantee of effective control – in exchange for around £50m investment, much of which they stipulate should be spent on buying some players and the most urgent football debts. They have increased an earlier offer.

CB Holding is owned by a bank, Straumur, which is owed a chunk of the club's £40m bank debts. On top of that, West Ham have £30m of other liabilities including £19m which is still owed to Sheffield United over the Carlos Tevez affair.

It is understood that Intermarket have tabled an offer of around £100m for the whole club, but the structure of their deal is not known. "There will be a deal with someone within a month," a source said.

Gold and Sullivan sold Birmingham last year for £82m, having bought it 16 years ago for £1 and transformed its fortunes; they laid the foundation for Blues' current progress. If the pair fail with their West Ham bid, they will target Charlton then Crystal Palace, in that order.

Fernandes throws hat into the ring

MULTI-MILLIONAIRE businessman and ard-ent West Ham fan Tony Fernandes has thrown his hat into the ring as the bidders gather to take control of the club, writes DAVE EVANS.

Former Birmingham City owners David Gold and David Sullivan tabled their bid for the club two weeks ago, while London-based company Intermarket are expected to follow suit this week, but it is the interest of Fernandes that is causing most excitement among West Ham supporters.

The 45-year-old self-made man was at Upton Park on Sunday for the FA Cup tie with Arsenal and he gave a clue to his future involvement with the club on his twitter page at half time.

His message read: "Great half for the young Hammers. Soon they will have an owner who will make a difference and care."

Two weeks ago, Fernandes seemed to distance himself from the club, owing to his commitment to the Lotus Formula One racing team, who are returning to the sport this season.

But it appears the lure of taking control of the club he came to love as a boy, while at school in England, is too much and he is hopeful of winning the bid ahead of the other interested parties.

Gold and Sullivan seemed confident that their bid would be accepted by the club's Icelandic owners - CB Holding - but their offer is said to be £30million short of the valuation and if a better bid is around, then the owners are likely to go that way instead.

Fernandes is just the sort of ambitious entrepreneur that could benefit the Hammers.

He remortgaged his house and used up all his savings to buy the crumbling national airline of Malaysia, and turned it into one of the most successful airlines in the world.

Since then he has branched out into the hotel industry and his no-frills business empire could be just the kind of template needed at West Ham after some of the disastrous financial decisions of the past.

Fernandes, who is said to be worth around £300million, has already met Gianfranco Zola and professed his admiration for the boss and that could mean stability if he were to take over.

It is still a big if however. There seem to be three bidders on the table, while CB Holding are still insisting that they do not have to sell to any of them.

Victory on Sunday against Wolves could lift the Hammers into mid-table and that could either put the price of the club up once more, or convince the Icelandics to hang on to their asset.

Either way, the prospect of a firesale of players during January seems to have diminished, with only Matty Upson a possible departure.

Highest bidders for West Ham miss deadline

West Ham United’s ownership could be resolved within the next 24 hours, but there remains uncertainty over their buyer.

Straumur, the Icelandic bank that owns the club, has been in talks to sell a part or a full stake, fearing its exposure to liabilities in the event of relegation this season. The debt stands at about £80 million.

Intermarket, an investment company and one of four interested parties, has made the highest bid, which values the club at about £100 million. But it was unable to meet a 6pm deadline last night to prove that it had sufficient money for a takeover, although Intermarket claimed that the cut-off point had been removed.

It leaves David Sullivan and David Gold, the former Birmingham City owners who made a takeover bid last month, hoping to take advantage. Their bid is lower and the terms of the deal deliver a smaller sum to Straumur.

An American group, favoured by the banks that are owed nearly £50 million by West Ham, withdrew because its request for exclusive talks was rejected. [b]Tony Fernandes, a Malaysian airline entrepreneur, has failed to deliver.

If takeover talks fail, West Ham will have to find about £10 million by April to meet other liabilities, such as transfer payments, which could force them to sell players.

Air Asia boss in Hammers takeover bid

Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes is out to win control of West Ham in the next 48 hours by pledging a "significant" transfer pot for Gianfranco Zola to invest in a new team at Upton Park.

Hammers fan Fernandes is trying to hurry the deal through in time to make an impact in the January transfer window.

However, former Birmingham City owners David Gold and David Sullivan are also in the bidding war with Fernandes, and haven't given up hope of success.

Gold and Sullivan have the experience of running Blues and would probably want the equally knowledgeable Karren Brady - who was managing director at St Andrew's - as part of their new management team at Upton Park. In contrast, the man who owns Air Asia has no previous involvement in football, but would maintain the high level of foreign ownership in the Premier League.

ESPN Soccernet has learned that the long-awaited Hammers takeover is in its final stages, and could be concluded before the weekend to provide an injection of much needed transfer cash for Zola, with the new owners likely to be in place, ready for action on Monday morning.

A City source told ESPN Soccernet: "The way the transaction is being structured any capital is going straight into the club.

"The plan is for a new share issue and this can mean a significant investment going into the club, which in turn can stimulate the belief from the banks that over a period of time, they can recoup the money owed to them.

"The feeling is that Tony Fernandes really does mean business and West Ham can end up with more capital if they go with him."

The source insists that Intermarket - another company heavily linked with a takeover bid for the Hammers - has never been able to show proof of funds to the satisfaction of the banks, despite its protestations to the contrary.

The consortium of five banks that has loaned money to the Hammers is believed to favour the takeover proposals tabled by Fernandes, but Gold and Sullivan might make a last ditch attempt to improve their offer in the next 24 hours.

Rothschild, the investment bank which was appointed in October to sound out potential investors, together with representatives from Glitnir, Standard Bank, Lloyds, Royal Bank of Scotland and Straumur, West Ham's five main lenders, is on the verge of making its decision.

Fernandes, a lifelong West Ham supporter and Lotus F1 team boss, has been locked in talks in with Straumur, in its capacity as the largest shareholder in CB Holdings - the company set up by the creditors of West Ham's former owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson.

Tony Fernandes emerges as clear favourite to take over West Ham

Fernandes could complete Hammers takeover on Friday

The takeover of West Ham United is on schedule to be completed on Friday, and Gianfranco Zola will immediately be handed an injection of substantial funds to buy his way out of relegation trouble.

ESPN Soccernet has been told that the five lending banks have all agreed to hand over control of the crisis torn East End club in time for Zola to embark on a spending spree before the January transfer window closes.

It should be completed in the next 24 hours and, as ESPN Soccernet reported on Wednesday, Tony Fernandes is in pole position, but is being hotly pursued by former Birmingham City owners David Gold and David Sullivan, with Massimo Cellino, a property developer based in Miami, making a late bid.

Fernandes, the boss of Team Lotus - the returning Formula One outfit - and founder of Air Asia, has already outlined his plans in detail, and has made a very impressive pitch.

Debts have spiralled out of control since the collapse of Landsbanki, the Icelandic bank in which Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson, the former owner of West Ham, held a 41% stake. Although CB Holdings' £100 million asking price has never been met, the equity investment proposed values West ham at around that amount.

Without the takeover going through the Hammers would be hard pressed to stave off relegation, and ultimately will have to face the unsavory act of selling off their best players like Scott Parker and Matthew Upson.

ESPN Soccernet's source comments: "Every day counts if the funds are to be made available to the manager, everyone is acutely aware that time is running out, so minds are focused on trying to tie up a deal as soon as possible. It wouldn't surprise me it if went through on Friday."

The feeling among the lending banks is that Fernandez will be the better long-term investor. With payments spread over a period of time with the capital going into the club to alleviate debts of £75 million, that is of paramount importance.

As for the late intervention of Cellino, that has put the cat among the pigeons, but not without its problems, as he is already an owner of another club - Cagliari - which would cause problems with UEFA. And of course, the Premier League are tightening up their status exploration of any new owners and the source of their funds to buy a club.

Rothschild, the investment bank appointed by CB Holdings to handle the sale, is sure to play a prominent role in scrutinising the source of funds, which has also caused Canary Wharf based InterMarket to fall down the list of potential purchasers.

Cellino has been reported in the press as saying that he is acting as a frontman for an unidentified consortium, but ESPN Soccernet has been told that he has so far suggested he would be a potential purchaser in his own right.

The 54-year-old's fortune is apparently accrued from running his family's commercial farming and property business, before taking control of Cagliari in 1992. He convinced Zola to return to his homeland club after his hugely successful spell with Chelsea.

He moved to Miami three years ago, but remains an active president of the club, attending the majority of their matches. He also serves as vice-president of the Italian League and has maintained close links with Zola and Gianluca Nani, the Italian who is West Ham's technical director, so his connections with Cagliari would need to further scrutinised before he could even be considered a viable alternative bidder.

Cellino is a successful owner at Cagliari, providing the finance for the club's new training ground and sports complex in Assemini and recently announcing plans for a new stadium, the Karalis Arena, which he hopes will form part of Italy's candidacy to host Euro 2016.

Intermarket, the London-based investment company, registered an interest, but City sources have always been sceptical about the source of their funding, while the proposed takeover suffered a setback last weekend with the death of Jim Bowe, the company's chief executive.

Tony Fernandes's West Ham United takeover hits impasse which could let in David Sullivan

An impasse was reached over the weekend, although there was fresh hope on Sunday that a resolution could be found with the consortium of banks and creditors who own the Premier League club.

Former Birmingham City co-owner David Sullivan also remains strongly in the running to acquire the club from CB Holding, the company which was set up to own West Ham United following the collapse of the business empire of Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson. Sullivan could be allowed to make his move on Monday.

Because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations, it is not entirely clear why a resolution with Fernandes has not been found. It had been hoped that an agreement would be struck on Friday as talks appeared to reach a climax.

According to sources, the main sticking point on the Fernandes deal is that he has made it clear he wants to take total control of running the club and sorting out the finances.

For this to happen, it may be that he wants to acquire 100 per cent of West Ham immediately and that, for some reason, CB Holding, and its principal shareholder, Straumur, the Icelandic finance house, may be reluctant to allow him to do this.

It is more than likely they are haggling over the price.

Sullivan has proposed taking a 51 per cent stake and his bid, as with Fernandes, is understood to have passed all the checks and balances while due diligence has been conducted by both businessmen.

One source close to Straumur said: "Both are ready to complete."

The hold-up is a frustration to West Ham and their supporters as it eats up valuable time in the transfer window. The club are unable to buy before they can sell and manager Gianfranco Zola is reluctant to do that until he knows what the future holds.

He is believed to be concerned over his own future, with strong indications that Sullivan wants to replace Zola and hopes to recruit Mark Hughes, the former Manchester City manager.

If neither Fernandes nor Sullivan is able to conclude a deal – and CB Holding maintain they do not have to sell – then it could open the way for a bid to be made by the Cagliari president Massimo Cellino who, like the Intermarket Group, has also signed a non-disclosure agreement with the bank Rothschild.

Gold and Sullivan take control of West Ham UnitedBy Harry Harris

David Sullivan and David Gold have completed their takeover of West Ham and Sullivan has already confirmed to Soccernet that he has a seven-year plan to take the Hammers into the Champions League.
David Sullivan: New owner at WestHam

• New owners won't sack Zola
Sullivansaid: "We have a seven-year plan to take West Ham into the top four. Wemean business with our seven-year plan, and if we don't make West Hamsuch a big club we will have failed. That is the extent of ourambitions for West Ham.
"We want to do it in the name of BobbyMoore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. We want West Ham back to theirformer glories when these guys played for the club.

"eopleforget that I gave Bobby Moore a jobs a few years after he finished infootball. I made him sports editor of my sports publication, gave him£100,000 when that was a lot of money and it was only really a PR jobas he worked one day a week for me, but he deserved to be looked after."

Sullivanis a big West Ham fan and fought to win the battle for control of theclub. He added: "It was a struggle all the way, and we finally pulledit off close to midnight. There were two others fighting hard as well,Tony Fernandes came close and the Italian deposited £50 million withRothschilds as a sign of good faith, but we have got it and I cannottell you how delighted we are."

Sullivan confirmed that KarenBrady will be hired to oversee the transformation of the club. Sullivansaid: "She's on her way there now." A City insider close to thedeal revealed on Tuesday morning: "The deal was sealed around 2330 GMTlast night and means the enterprise value of the club is £105 million.

"Thedebts are £70 million including the monies still owed to SheffieldUnited, and is between £15 million and £20 million owed to clubs intransfer instalments."

Sullivan and Gold have paid around £50million for a 50% stake in the club, with an option to buy the other50%. The source added added: "All the money goes straight into theclub."

That will enable Sullivan and Gold to conclude at leasttwo transfers immediately. It is understood that the new owners havehad two signings in the pipeline for some time and were gettingfrustrated with the end of the transfer window approaching, so demandedthat the deal went through on Monday night.

It is also understoodthat Sullivan and Gold are critical of the way the consortium of bankshave been running the club and that there are restrictions they want tosee lifted, so they can do it "their way".

The former Birminghamowners plan to call a press conference at Upton Park later on Tuesdayand are expected to be critical of the level of crippling debts run upby the club. That means there are sure to be changes behind the sceneswith Karen Brady, formerly managing director at Birmingham, beingcalled up to sort out the mess.
