Building from the ruins
SO the Serie A football season finally begins this weekend ?n the aftermath of a whirlwind summer punctuated by contrasting fortunes that plummeted to the nadir with the match-fixing (or calciopoli) scandal and then climbing to the zenith after the Azzurri claimed the World Cup.
There will however be a notable absentee from the proceedings as the country? most successful club Juventus were demoted to Serie B as punishment for their wrong-doings that brought one of Europe? top leagues into disrepute.
For quite a while now the bianconeri have prospered through not only excellent playing personnel and astute managerial know-how but also via a ?elping hand? from the arbiters and administrators of the domestic game.
La Vecchia Signoria or the Grand Old Lady was caught red-handed and found guilty of being the main culprit in the scandal as her conniving and unethical actions were unearthed and now she is forced to suffer the ignominy of relegation.
The last two championships, which were garnered under the guidance of the scholarly and square-jawed master tactician Fabio Capello were also stripped off the zebras by the Italian sports tribunal.
Apart from having the 2004/05 and 2005/06 league titles erased from the record books, as a result of being booted from the top flight, the club has also endured an exodus of its stars.
Italian national team captain Fabio Cannavaro and Brazilian midfield hard man Emerson have signed for Real Madrid where they will be reunited with Capello, whilst their former team-mates Lilian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta were wooed by the European and Spanish champions Barcelona.
Patrick Viera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the other hand chose to continue to ply their trade in Italy and could not resist Roberto Mancini? overtures by agreeing to contracts with Internazionale.
The nerazzurri, became the main benefactor from the calciopoli fallout by being handed last season? scudetto as both Juventus and second-placed AC Milan were indicted on match-fixing charges.
Now with neighbourhood nemesis AC Milan also implicated in the scandal and faced with an eight-point penalty, Internazionale are primed for a successful climax to the championship and this time through hard graft, not by a decision of a judicial body.
But they open their campaign with a tricky tie at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, the home of La Viola, Tuscany? finest and the employers of goal-machine Luca Toni. Despite persistent rumours of a summer departure, last season? top scorer with 31 goals to his name stayed on with Fiorentina.
With Toni in the line-up, the Florentines who were also found guilty in the crackdown have an outstanding chance of erasing the enforced 19-point deficit and maybe even fight for a UEFA Cup place for next season. However, manager, Cesare Prandelli? main objective would be to ensure the club? Serie A survival.
Carlo Ancelotti? men who make up the red and black half of Italy? fashion capital welcome back captain Paolo Maldini after a long tussle with a persistent knee injury.
The 38 year-old Milan legend has not lost any of his hunger or desire for success as he begins his 23rd Serie A season with a home tie against Lazio, another club that has to overcome a points deficit.
Andriy Shevchenko? move to Chelsea will have a negative impact on the rossoneri and Brazilian new boy Ricardo Oliveira has been picked up to fill the void and contribute to the goals for column but the pressure will be on Italian international Alberto Gilardino to deliver in his sophomore year at the San Siro.
Kaka, the gem of Milan? attack is expected to be given added responsibility as Ancelotti looks to the Brazilian to neutralise opposing defences with his intelligent passing and impeccable distribution.
If the supremely gifted playmaker Francesco Totti finds some semblance of consistency, then AS Roma may be touted as the dark horses for the title.
The giallorossi who clinched the scudetto a few seasons ago may not have big-name players on their roster apart from club captain Totti but in Luciano Spalletti, the Romans are blessed with a gaffer who has an uncanny ability to turn seemingly ordinary players into world-class warriors and this could eventually lead to something special come next summer.
Though the club are downplaying their chances with recent press statements claiming that they are nowhere close to the strength and depth of the Milan duo, many in Italy are of the opinion that Roma should have no problems in obtaining a top three finish.
One club that has had the whole of Italy welcoming them back into the Serie A fold are Torino, the best supported side from the northern city of Turin, which incidentally is also home to Juventus.
The cash-strapped granata have it all to do if they are to maintain their Serie A spot. Marking their return with a home tie against a solid Parma outfit, coach Giovanni De Biasi has to ensure that his young side? naivety does not cause them untoward harm especially when facing more experienced teams.
It will be a steep learning curve for Torino and they will have to learn fast if they are to reward the club? long-suffering loyalists with something to cheer at long last.
This weekend? opening round of matches will be marked with a minute of silence following the untimely demise of one of the game? true gentlemen Giacinto Facchetti.
The 64-year-old? health had severely deteriorated over the past few weeks and he finally succumbed to his illness on Monday.
Facchetti had captained his national side and spent his entire playing career at Internazionale winning two European Cups and four Serie A titles. He represented all that was good in the Italian game, let us hope that his legacy and attitude continues to persevere in the actions of the current crop of professionals as the new season begins. |
