What they do:
Network Engineer maintain, test, monitor, and troubleshoot Local and Wide Area Networks and resolve user problems. They report to a Network Manager or Administrator on matters such as equipment needs, upgrades and usage levels. They study, facilitate and document the transition to integrated network-based systems within a specified area or building and/or between a central office and off-site locations. They act as the liaison for vendors and in-house automation and data processing personnel.


Position Description:
* Perform high-level network technical duties
* Design network routers, hubs, servers and switches
* Plan, implement and support network solutions between multiple platforms
* Install and maintain local area network hardware and software
* Troubleshoot network usage and computer peripherals
* Manage a communications network within an organization
* Oversee network security
* Distribute software upgrades
* Monitor daily activity
* Enforce licensing agreements, developing a storage management program and providing for routine backups. Install and maintain network hardware and software
* Troubleshoot network usage and computer peripherals
* Install new users
* Install new applications
* Perform system backups and data recovery
* Resolve network communication problems

Areas of Specialty:
The term "network" has vastly different meanings in a variety of computing and telecommunication environments. Network-related jobs are still being defined and standardized by information systems industry experts, but until these standards are set and employers follow them,there exists some disparity of titles, requirements and job duties in the private sector. Here, networks refer to the hardware and software operating systems that connect clients and servers to each other for the purposes of sharing data and communication between users. Among the areas of speciality are:
* Computer Systems
* Data Communications System
* Data Communications Equipment
* Telecommunications
* Consultants (Computer Systems)
* Consultants (Telecommunications)

Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, related engineering or any related major plus 1 to 3 years experience working with networks, computers and related operating systems. Certification through vendor program helpful. Continuous training through vendors, professional development seminars and workshops.

Job Skills Needed:
* Knowledge of related technologies, hardware, supporting software and operating systems
* Analytical skills
* Ability to prepare documentation
* Ability to communicate equally well with both technically literate and those who have no computer background

Point of Interest:
Network technology is now incorporated into most engineering and computer science curricula, however many of today's "pioneer" Network Managers, Analysts and Technicians say they learned the new technology by taking courses offered by the manufacturer and by reading manuals on their own. While most of today's existing network-related workers were hired with proven experience and a stated interest in computers, many report having college degrees in such disparate areas as language, history and agriculture. Some LAN Managers and Administrators are former Data Processing Managers and Administrators whose duties and title may have changed along with the computing environment.

Average Annual Salaries in 2000:
New, no experience: RM19,000
New with experience: RM26,800
Seasoned: RM36,400

Future Outlook:
During the past several years, there has been a trend in businesses to downsize from centralized mainframe systems to distributed networks which integrate minicomputers, workstations, and personal computers into an organization's computing environment. Revenues for local area network hardware alone were estimated at RM31.5 million in 1999, a 23 percent increase over the prior year. Industry experts predict the growth to continue for the next five years and say more users will require increased networking capability and bandwidth at the desktop, as well as in geographically dispersed sites. As networks and their related software and products become more affordable, and are accepted and used, specialized occupations emerge.

ada kompeni yg saja taknak bayar mahal tapi mintak macam2.. VoIP la VLAN la WiFi la.. nak wat SMS gateway la..  macam2 lagik.. bagi aku rm3-5k at least dah ok untuk local malaysian.. imported depa leh bayar laks rm10k per month at least.. prejudis sungguh

mmg luas..
kalau dikira dari segi general.. IT nih lebihs luas scopenya dan boleh melibatkan luar darik bidang computer.. kalau comp science secara normalnya, macam ambik contoh univ.. IT lebih general.. programming cikit, hardware cikit, software sikit, network cikit.. SEMUA CIKIT so ia sekadar TAHU SAHAJA.. berbanding bfab computer science yg lebih hardcore dan banyak menuju ke teknikal yg jauh lebih detail dan susah..
