               A remote-controlled bomb struck a bus travelling northwest of Kabul on Tuesday   morning, killing at least nine passengers, police said.

The militant who set off the device was spotted running away from the scene   and was captured by local villagers.

The bomb was placed under a bridge and was detonated when the bus drove over   the span. Broken glass and abandoned shoes of victims littered the road near   the bus, which was hurled onto its side at the site of the explosion in   Paghman district of Kabul province.

At least three other people were wounded in the blast, which went off at   around 7am local time (02.30 GMT) as Afghans were making their way to work.

"The person who pushed the button on the remote-controlled bomb was   captured by villagers who saw him running," said Abdul Razaq, an Afghan   police official in the Kabul area.

        Initial reports said the bus was ferrying government employees to an Afghan   ministry, but those reports could not be confirmed.
Police speculated that the bomber might have tried to target a bus full of   government workers but blew up a civilian bus by mistake.
Colonel Amrullah, the Paghman district police chief said the explosion killed   nine people, including two who were rushed to a local hospital but died   within hours.
He said three others were wounded. No one immediately claimed responsibility   for the attack, but Amrullah blamed insurgents affiliated with the Taliban.
"It was planted by the enemy of the country," Amrullah said of the   bomb. He said that police had seized the bomb's remote control from the man   who was captured.
A second truck bomb exploded at a Nato military base south of the Afghan   capital Tuesday, wounding at least a dozen civilians.
A spokesman for Nato's International Security Assistance Force confirmed that "there   has been an explosion at an Isaf facility in Logar province," but said   there were no immediate reports of injuries among the troops.
"A truck loaded with explosives detonated at the coalition forces' camp   in (provincial capital) Pule Alam city," said Ghulam Sakhi Rogh   Lewanai, the provincial police chief.
"So far we have information that 12 civilians have been injured," he   said.
Mr Lawanay said a suicide attacker rammed the explosives-laden pickup truck   into a gate at the Nato base, the vehicle belonged to a local contractor who   was authorised to work on the base.
Taliban insurgents claimed the attack.
"At around 9:00 am (04.30 GMT) one of our Mujahideen (holy warriors)   carried out a suicide truck bomb attack on a big US forces' camp resulting   in many deaths and injuries," Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman,   said in a text message.
Earlier Tuesday, a Taliban bomb killed eight people and wounded five when it   struck a minibus on the western outskirts of Kabul, police said, amid   growing unrest in areas neighbouring the Afghan capital.
Isaf, which has 130,000 US-led troops in Afghanistan, has noted a spike in   attacks countrywide in recent months, since the start of the insurgents'   annual summer offensive.
June saw the highest number of attacks in nearly two years, with more than 100   assaults a day across the country, including fire fights and roadside   bombings, the coalition said.

The Taliban (Pashto: طالبان), alternative spelling Taleban,[5] (ṭālibān, meaning "students" in Pashto) is an Islamist militant movement of Pashtun tribesmen.[6] It ruled large parts of Afghanistan and its capital, Kabul, as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan from September 1996 until October 2001. It gained diplomatic recognition from three states: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. From 1995-2001, the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence[14] and military[15] are widely alleged by the international community to have provided support to the Taliban.[16] Pakistan has been accused by many international officials of continuing to support the Taliban today, but Pakistan claims to have dropped all support for the group since 9/11.[17][18][19] Al Qaeda also supported the Taliban with regiments of imported fighters from Arab countries and Central Asia.[20][21][22] Saudi Arabia provided financial support.[23] The Taliban and their allies committed massacres against Afghan civilians,[24][25][26] denied UN food supplies to 160,000 starving civilians[27] and conducted a policy of scorched earth burning vast areas of fertile land and destroying tens of thousands of homes during their rule from 1996-2001.[28][29] Hundreds of thousands of people were forced to flee to United Front-controlled territory, Pakistan and Iran.[29]
After the attacks of September 11, 2001 the Taliban were overthrown by the American-led invasion of Afghanistan. Later it regrouped as an insurgency movement to fight the American-backed Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (established in late 2001) and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).[30] The Taliban have been accused of using terrorism as a specific tactic to further their ideological and political goals.[31][32] According to the United Nations, the Taliban and their allies were responsible for 75% of Afghan civilian casualties in 2010 and 80% in 2011.[33][34][35] Today the Taliban operate in Afghanistan and northwest Pakistan. It is believed one of their current major headquarters is near Quetta in Pakistan.[36][37]
