ALAN CURBISHLEY is on collision course with the West Ham board after Sunderland made a deadline-day move to take defender George McCartney back to the Stadium of Light.

The board accepted a £2.5million offer despite boss Curbs saying no more stars would be leaving in the transfer window.

Curbs had already performed a staggering U-turn by letting defender Anton Ferdinand go to the Stadium of Light just a few days after claiming the centre-half was part of his long-term plans.

Twice last week, the under-pressure Hammers boss declared no one else would be sold as the club tried to balance the books after two years of crazy spending.

Following Saturday’s 4-1 win over Blackburn, he stated: “I said on Wednesday that Anton leaving was it. I’ve no intention of selling.”

But SunSport can reveal West Ham were trying to strike a deal to offload McCartney last Friday — 24 hours before Curbishley’s empty claims.

Icelandic chairman Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson authorised the sale of McCartney, 27, who was undergoing a medical last night.

Any deal would see Black Cats boss Roy Keane take his summer spending past £35m.

Sunderland immediately recouped McCartney’s fee by allowing Danny Higginbotham to rejoin STOKE for £2.5m.

Sunderland manager Keane quits club

Sunderland manager Roy Keane has left the Wearside club, according to sources.

Their has been no official confirmation from the Black Cats but Keane had hinted he might quit the club following a run of six defeats in seven matches.

The 37-year-old, who is believed to have been locked in talks with the club's hierarchy recently, was due to hold his pre-match press conference for Saturday's Premier League trip to former club Manchester United at 1pm.

Earlier this week Keane was accused of losing the plot by the man who ghost-wrote his best-selling autobiography, Eamon Dunphy.

With Sunderland in disastrous form in the Premier League, Dunphy, when asked by the BBC about his former friend, said Keane's recent media appearances belied a man "in a fog" and that his time at the Stadium of Light may well be doomed by a shift in the boardroom balance of power.

Dunphy queried Keane's mental state when he said: "He is rambling about all sorts of things and it's really ridiculous. He's lost the plot. I have the highest regard for him, he's a remarkable, intelligent, family man, but he's lost the plot big time."
