There are plenty of players capable of taking the captain's armband from beckham. sorry - i 'd always thought beckham's appointment was only temporary when Shearer retired.

Beckham under siege

LONDON - Do not blame us, it is your own fault. As expected, there was a quick comeback from Real Madrid after David Beckham complained that the training regimen at the Spanish giants was the reason he had under-performed at the European Championship.

He had said: 'Maybe my fitness wasn't what it should have been. We didn't do the conditioning work at Real Madrid that I was used to doing at United. That's just the way it is in Spain.

'I didn't feel as fit in the second half of the season and maybe it spilled over.'

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez retorted: 'Yes, we understand your concerns. We agree with you that the training was not up to it and that the organisation of the team was not right.

'We will put that right next season. But who was it who did not train at all during the Christmas break?

'Who keeps flying back to England when he is asked to rest? Who has to take responsibility for that?'

The England captain, once renowned for his fitness and tireless running, was a shadow of himself in Portugal.

After England were dumped from the tournament, Beckham admitted he was not as fit as he should have been.

In fact, sources from the England camp said the midfielder had to be put through extra physical training sessions to get him up to speed.

If he wants to bounce back from a miserable season at Real, he will have to cut down on his jet-set lifestyle - and prove himself again, this time to Real's new coach Jose Camacho.

Camacho has promised a new rotation policy at Real, which means Beckham can no longer consider himself an automatic choice.

While there are no suggestions from within the Spanish giants that they have run out of patience with the England player, he was forced to give an undertaking to Perez that he will knuckle down to a more disciplined life on and off the pitch, reported The Mirror yesterday.

A Real source told the paper on Sunday: 'Beckham had a meeting with Perez at the end of the season when both sides voiced their concerns.

'David told the club that he did not believe they had protected his privacy and that of his family enough, and Perez took that on board.

'But at the same time, he was told that when the coach says the players can rest for two days, that does not mean taking a 3am flight back to England and then returning in time for training 48 hours later.

'He is playing for Madrid and must live in Madrid.'

Beckham was making all the trips back to England because his wife Victoria and two sons were still living there. However, Victoria, Brooklyn and Romeo are now expected to move to Madrid, so Beckham should have no more excuses.

Camacho is a known disciplinarian and is seen as the ideal coach to deal with the number of star egos on the team, including Raul Gonzalez, Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo.

Of Beckham's complaints, the new Real coach told tribalfootball.com: 'I don't know if Real has had a poor training programme. But I do know for a great player to show his ability, he must be at peak fitness. This is something we will work on.

'Beckham is a player who works very hard for his team. For England, he has to take on a lot of responsibility, but at Real, he knows he has Figo, Zidane, Raul, etc to help him.

'He knows what is needed of him at Real Madrid.'

It is just as well that Real have a new coach since Beckham's opinion on the lax training sessions conducted by former manager Carlos Queiroz obviously did not go down well with Queiroz.

The Portuguese, who was the No 2 at Manchester United while Beckham was still there, has since returned to work with Alex Ferguson after being fired by Real following the club's trophy-less season.

The Sun reported yesterday that he is furious with his former charge for slamming his training methods, and refuses to become the scapegoat for Beckham's failure.

Queiroz, like Perez, reckons Beckham's lack of fitness was down to the fact that the player kept missing training to spend time back in England with his wife and sons.

The Portuguese also reckons that his own position as Real coach was fatally undermined by Beckham's relationship with Perez.

He told friends that Beckham's fitness woes are the player's own doing.

He also revealed that the England captain would not tell him of his absence but would instead call Perez.

Queiroz: I blame Beckham

David Beckham has fallen out with Carlos Queiroz after blaming the ex-Real Madrid coach for his dismal Euro 2004. England captain Beckham finally conceded he was not fit after Thursday’s quarter-final defeat by hosts Portugal. And he has blamed his problems on the poor training regime at Real. But those claims have infuriated Queiroz, who reckons Beckham’s lack of fitness was down to the fact the player kept missing training to spend time back in England with wife Victoria. Queiroz also reckons his own position as Real coach was fatally undermined by Becks’ relationship with Bernabeu president Florentino Perez.
