Kenichi Matsuyama confirmed as star of 2012 taiga drama
Thu, November 25, 2010 (8:28am EST)

A couple weeks ago, rumors surfaced that actor Kenichi Matsuyama (25) had been chosen to star in NHK's 2012 taiga drama, "Taira no Kiyomori." The network confirmed that on Thursday with an official press conference announcing Matsuyama as the show's star.

This will be Matsuyama's first appearance in one of NHK's taiga dramas. As previously reported, the series will revolve around the life of the 12th century general Taira no Kiyomori, responsible for the Taira clan's rise to power. Although Taira no Kiyomori has traditionally been portrayed as a villain, his character will be depicted differently in this drama.

The series is scheduled to premiere in January 2012, though filming is expected to start next summer.

Kohaku Gets a Headliner
November 30, 2010

NHK have managed to snag at least one headline-worthy act for this year's "Kohaku Uta Gassen." When the lineup for the 61st annual New Year's Eve song battle was announced last week, it was noticeably short of surprises or "medama" ("standout," lit. eyeball) artists. But yesterday it was announced that Southern All Stars vocalist Kuwata Keisuke (54) would appear, just six months after he underwent surgery for esophageal cancer. It will be his first time to perform on the live concert as a solo artist. He is being billed as a "special guest," as was legendary rocker Yazawa Eikichi (61) last year, in what will be his first public appearance since a concert by his wife and fellow SAS member, Hara Yuko (53), on July 4.

AI to collaborate with The Jacksons for Michael Jackson tribute concerts
Mon, November 29, 2010 (12:32pm EST)

It has been announced that singer AI (29) will be collaborating with The Jacksons (consisting of Jackie, Tito, Marlon and Jermaine) next year, as part of a concert series paying tribute to the late pop legend Michael Jackson. AI announced the news during her 10th anniversary concert at Nippon Budokan on Monday night.

According to an exclusive article by CNNGo, AI will serve as the emcee for the first two shows of the concert series, expected to be held in October 2011. She will also be recording new songs with the group earlier in the year, which she will then perform with them on stage at the concerts.

CNNGo reports that the two concerts are tentatively set for October 14-15, with multiple special guest artists standing in for Michael Jackson, though the lineup is currently a secret. After the two shows in Tokyo, the Jacksons will likely continue the tribute series with concerts around the world, and AI may be serving as the emcee for those as well.

AI has recently collaborated with several international artists, including Judith Hill, Chaka Khan, and Boyz II Men.

'Gantz' movie to be released in U.S. ahead of Japan

Wednesday 01st December, 03:13 AM JST

TOKYO —

Arashi member Kazunari Ninomiya, 27, perhaps best known to overseas audiences for his role in Clint Eastwood’s “Letters From Iwo Jima,” and Kenichi Matsuyama, 25, who played “L” in the movie adaptation of “Death Note,” are to star together in the forthcoming movie “Gantz,” directed by Shinsuke Sato. The movie, based on the the manga and anime of the same name written and illustrated by Hiroya Oku, 43, tells the story of friends Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato who find themselves embroiled in a supernatural demon-hunt in purgatory after dying in a train accident.

In an unprecedented move, the dubbed English version of the movie is scheduled for release in over 300 theaters across the United States on Jan 20 next year,
ahead of the Japanese release date. “I’m really pleased that lots of people in America are going to get the opportunity to see the movie,” said Matsuyama. Ninomiya added: “There are a lot of people around the world who have a deep affection for the ‘Gantz” franchise, so I’m sure it’s the best thing for the series.”

Sato shot “Gantz” back to back with its sequel “Gantz: Part II.” The first movie is due to hit Japanese screens on Jan 29 next year, with the sequel following soon after on April 23.

"Tetsuo: The Bullet Man" to play in U.S. theaters
Tue, November 30, 2010 (9:50am EST)

It was recently announced that the first live-action "GANTZ" movie will be getting a wide release in the United States, but that won't be the only Japanese action film playing in American theaters this January. On the same weekend that "GANTZ" opens, Shinya Tsukamoto's "Tetsuo: The Bullet Man" will also begin a theatrical run, though on a smaller scale.

Whereas "GANTZ" is reportedly aiming to be shown in 300 theaters in the U.S., "Tetsuo: The Bullet Man" will play in a little over 10 major cities, including New York, Chicago, Detroit, and Denver.

Tsukamoto's "Tetsuo" series has become a cult classic, starting with "Tetsuo: The Iron Man" in 1989 and the sequel "Tetsuo II: The Body Hammer" in 1992. While the third film, "Tetsuo: The Bullet Man," is based on the same theme of a man transforming into machine and becoming a human weapon, it is the first in the series to be filmed in English, with American actor Eric Bossick as the star. The movie had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2009, and its U.S. premiere this past April as part of the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

The North American distributor for "Tetsuo: The Bullet Man" is IFC Films. The movie is planned to open in theaters on January 21, 2011.

Charts: Mr.Children, KinKi Kids, EXILE
Wed, December 8, 2010 (10:57am EST)

Mr.Children's latest album, "SENSE," sold nearly 502,000 copies in its first week to take the #1 spot on the charts. This is the band's 8th consecutive #1 album and 13th overall, though their last album was released almost two years ago. Mr.Children's last five original albums have become million-sellers, and "SENSE" is well on its way to becoming the sixth.

DREAMS COME TRUE entered the charts at #2. An album for the anime series "Bleach" debuted at #7, followed by new released from fripSide, YUKI, and Black Eyed Peas.

On the singles chart, it was no surprise that KinKi Kids were #1 with their new song, "Family ~ Hitotsu ni Naru Koto," which sold more than 165,000 copies. They now have reached a milestone of 30 number-one singles. Ever since their 11th single in 2001, they have been certified by Guinness as the world record holder of "most consecutive #1 singles beginning with a debut single."

Several other new singles made the top ten: Yuzu was #2, followed in order by J Soul Brothers, T.M.Revolution, SID, °C-ute, and D?DATE (with their first single). Becky was two spots behind them at #9.

The DVD charts this week went to EXILE, whose "EXILE LIVE TOUR 2010 FANTASY" sold over 274,000 copies. This is their new personal record for first-week DVD sales, surpassing the 223,000 copies sold by their 2009 release "EXILE LIVE TOUR 2009 THE MONSTER."

"Norwegian Wood" to be distributed in 50 countries
Wed, December 8, 2010 (6:10pm EST)

A preview screening for the "Norwegian Wood" movie adaptation, which opens in Japan on December 11, was held on Wednesday at the Norwegian Embassy in Tokyo. During the talk portion of the event with actor Kenichi Matsuyama and director Tran Anh Hung, it was announced that the movie will be released in 50 countries and territories.

It is rare for a Japanese live-action film to secure distribution in that many countries before it has even opened in Japan, but the movie is based on Haruki Murakami's international bestseller of the same name. The book has sold nearly 11 million copies in Japan since its publication in 1987, and it has been translated into 36 languages worldwide.

Ikimono Gakari to take a break in 2011
Wed, December 8, 2010 (7:00pm EST)

Ikimono Gakari vocalist Kiyoe Yoshioka (26) announced on Wednesday night that her weekly radio show "Ikimono Gakari Yoshioka Kiyoe no All Night Nippon" will be ending with its December 21 broadcast. More importantly, she apparently confirmed that the band will be taking a break from performances during the first half of 2011.

A rumor was published in newspapaers last month that the band would be going on hiatus for the first half of 2011, but the band and their record label issued public denials at the time. The band's leader, Yoshiki Mizuno, previously said that the members had discussed focusing on writing new songs, but that they would continue with their live activities.

It is now being reported that Ikimono Gakari will indeed be focusing on writing, but will not be doing any concerts or live performances. The length of the "hiatus" has not been decided, but a source says that it will be half a year at most, and that the band will fully resume activities by July. Their performance at Kohaku Uta Gassen on December 31 has been declared as their "last" for now.

The timing of the decision seems odd, given that they are currently at their peak with their recent best album "Ikimono Bakari ~Members BEST Selection~" getting certified by the RIAJ as reaching 1 million copies shipped. However, Yoshioka said, "We've run too far so we would like to take a rest. Please forgive our selfishness."

Ikimono Gakari has three more concerts left in their current tour, beginning with one on Thursday. It is expected that they may deliver more details to their fans at those shows.
