Trans-Siberian Railroad

Trans-Siberian Railroad, rail line, linking European Russia with the Pacific coast. Its construction began in 1891, on the initiative of Count S. Y. Witte, and was completed in 1905. The completion of the railroad greatly affected the history of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, and modern Russia by opening up Siberia to development.

The original line began at Chelyabinsk and ran generally east through Omsk, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, and Chita; it traversed Manchuria and reentered Russian territory before ending at Vladivostok. The Manchurian section of the line is known as the Chinese Eastern Railroad. The present Trans-Siberian RR branches off from the original line at Chita to follow, roughly, the Amur and Ussuri rivers and reaches Vladivostok by way of Khabarovsk; it lies entirely in Russian territory. The Moscow-Vladivostok run is 5,785 mi (9,310 km); the electrification of the entire line was only completed in 2002. The line carries both freight and passengers.

DULU

SEKARANG

Enjoy the worlds longest and most famous railway journey from the comfort of a private railway carriage. The Trans-Siberian Railway traverses the whole expanse of Russia from Europe to the Orient. Few other journeys enable the passenger to relax so completely during their course, and to become lost in the rhythm of the journey as time zones and the urgency to arrive both become meaningless. The Trans-Siberian is, without doubt, the world’s most epic rail adventure.

The 10,000 kilometre adventure is well paced with around 1 day off the train for every day on board, taking you from Moscow and St Petersburg on the Baltic coast to Vladivostok on the Pacific, just a short hop from Japan (tours run both Eastbound and Westbound). The tours are fully inclusive with an extensive sightseeing program in the main towns and cities along the route, but there is also plenty of time to relax as our 'Hotel-on-Wheels' eats up the miles. Get up when you want, sleep when you want, enjoy fine dining in the restaurant car and have a drink with fellow passengers in the bar car. The advantage of having your 'hotel room' with you all the time soon becomes apparent – and the best part is not having to pack and unpack every day!

By contrast, we have selected the very best cars available to provide a relaxing environment with all the facilities you'd expect to find in a comfortable hotel. Everything needed is readily available on board. Our sleepers are very comfortable, fully air-conditioned and provide an ideal method of transport for the remote areas of Russia that we visit.

Tour of the Train

The Trans-Siberian does not operate a ‘fixed formation’ train, they vary the composition to suit the number of passengers. Maximum capacity is 96 passengers and they generally expect to run each full train departure with a minimum of 64 passengers.

First Class Sleeping Cars: Each car has nine twin compartments, all fitted with two lower berth beds that convert to couch seating for daytime travel. There is ample space for luggage storage under each bed and for suitcases in a recess above the corridor area. Clothes hangers are provided and the cars are well appointed with mirrors, bedside table, reading lamps and space for the storage of small items. A washroom/toilet is located at each end of the car, one of which also contains a chemical WC for the convenience of passengers use during station stops.

Deluxe Class Sleeping Car: Double (lower) or twin (upper/lower) compartments for maximum 8 passengers. Full en-suite WC and shower in each compartment, and a small communal bar area.

Restaurant Cars: Our restaurant cars serve a variety of fine Russian, European and Asian cuisine, together with wines from around the world. Besides our regular restaurant cars, we have three themed restaurant cars which provide a superior ambience with decor reflecting Russian, Baltic and Georgian styles.

Private VIP Car: Saloon cars were built to transport various Railway Managers and Communist Party Officials around the former USSR in an oasis of luxury. Each car provides completely self-contained living and sleeping quarters suitable for small groups of up to 6 people. Cars have a fully equipped kitchen and saloon lounge with central dining table for up to 10 people, which was also designed to double as a meeting room. A master bedroom with desk and wardrobe has shared en- suite facilities including a shower and bath unit with adjoining smaller bedrooms.

Bar Car: This is the focal point of the train during the day. The r perfect place to sit back and socialize with a relaxing drink, play chess, delve into a book or two, or simply , admire the changing landscape gently rolling by.

Shower Car: A unique feature of our train is the purpose-built shower car. Hot and cold water is on tap 24 hours per day, allowing you a refreshing shower at any time. The car has six private shower compartments, each with changing area and vanity unit.

Trans-Siberian Railway, the greater part of the rail route from Moscow through the Siberian steppes to the Pacific port of Vladivostok. Its serious planning began in the 1880s, motivated partly by military ambitions, but chiefly by eagerness to colonize the then virgin but cultivable lands in the east, which would relieve rural overpopulation in European Russia, and to tap their mineral resources. The driving force in the decision to build was Tsar Alexander III.

By 1890 the railway had reached some 2,000 km eastwards from Moscow to Chelyabinsk. In 1891-1892 Trans-Siberian construction started here and at the Vladivostok end of the track, which was finished throughout by the end of 1904. Confinement to Russian territory would have involved a detour through difficult terrain east of Lake Baikal. So initially, by an 1896 agreement with China, a much shorter and easier course was taken east of Chita through Dongbei, running over the Chinese Eastern Railway, which was built from 1897 to 1904 with private capital. Chelyabinsk to Vladivostok via this route was a journey of 4,045 km (2,514 mi).

However, the 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War hinted at the vulnerability of a route through Dongbei, and the all-Russian alternative was built between 1908 and 1914, at twice the cost per kilometre of any other Trans-Siberian section. This section forms part of the 9,297 km (5,578 mi) of today's Moscow-Vladivostok Trans-Siberian route (which runs from Moscow to Omsk via Yekaterinburg, not Chelyabinsk). The original single track was nearly strangled by traffic in the war with Japan. This led to a doubling of the track throughout almost its entire length by 1918. End-to-end electrification was completed between 1950 and 1970.
