LANGKAWI: After keeping a low profile for the last 16 years, developer Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing will be embarking on a multi-billion ringgit development project in Langkawi.
The Langkawi New City project, expected to cost around RM30 billion, will be located on about 81 hectares of reclaimed land off the west side of the island.
The project, which will be undertaken by his group of companies, is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad tomorrow, Ting told a media briefing on the project in Langkawi today.
He did not name the companies.
Ting said the project would involve the construction of about 30,000 high-end condominium units, commercial centres, berthing facilities for ocean liners and yachts and other facilities.
“Several companies in our group will be involved in the development which is expected to be completed in 10 years’ time, or even earlier,” he said, without disclosing the names of the companies involved.
He said the project, which would spur foreign investments in Langkawi, would be the biggest that he ever embarked on since he started his business activities on the island back in 1991.
Ting was reputed to have built a hotel on the island in a record 100 days in preparation for the inaugural Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace (LIMA) exposition in 1991.
The Sarawak-born businessman said he had spent over 20 years on the development plan, claiming that he had already won recognition from developers from France, Russia and South Korea.
“This project is bound to be the biggest ever development of such kind in the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia,” he said.
He ensured that the project’s environmental impact assessment had been conducted, adding that the plan was designed to preserve the beautiful natural surroundings of the area.
“This development would be akin to that in Dubai. This project would get more people to invest and stay here for a longer period, rather than for just one or two days,” he added. – Bernama

LANGKAWI 31 Mei - Selepas mendiamkan diri sejak 16 tahun yang lalu, pemaju hartanah Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing akan melaksanakan projek pembangunan berbilion ringgit di Langkawi.
Projek Bandaraya Baharu Langkawi, yang dijangka bernilai kira-kira RM30 bilion itu akan dibangunkan di atas 81 hektar tanah yang ditebus guna di barat pulau berkenaan.
Projek itu, yang akan dilaksanakan oleh kumpulan syarikatnya akan dilancarkan esok, katanya pada taklimat media mengenai projek tersebut di sini, hari ini. Ting berkata, projek itu akan melibatkan pembinaan kira-kira 30,000 unit kondominium mewah, pusat komersil, kemudahan dermaga untuk kapal penumpang dan kapal layar serta kemudahan lain. "Beberapa syarikat dalam kumpulan kami akan terlibat dalam pembangunan yang dijangka selesai dalam masa 10 tahun atau lebih awal lagi," katanya tanpa mendedahkan nama syarikat yang terlibat. Menurutnya, projek berkenaan akan merangsang pelaburan asing di Langkawi dan akan menjadi yang terbesar yang pernah dilaksanakannya sejak beliau memulakan aktiviti perniagaannya di pulau tersebut pada 1991. Ting terkenal dengan membina sebuah hotel di pulau itu dalam tempoh 100 hari sebagai persediaan untuk Pameran Maritim dan Aeroangkasa Antarabangsa Langkawi (LIMA) pada 1991. Usahawan kelahiran Sarawak itu berkata, beliau telah menghabiskan lebih daripada 20 tahun dalam rancangan pembangunan itu, mendakwa bahawa dia telah mendapat pengiktirafan daripada pemaju dari Perancis, Rusia dan Korea Selatan. 
"Projek ini dijangka menjadi pembangunan terbesar seumpamanya di bahagian utara Semenanjung Malaysia," katanya. Beliau memberi jaminan yang penilaian alam sekitar ke atas projek tersebut telah dijalankan, sambil menambah bahawa rancangan itu direka untuk memelihara persekitaran semula jadi yang indah di situ. "Pembangunan ini akan menjadi seperti di Dubai. Projek ini akan mendapatkan lebih ramai orang untuk melabur dan tinggal di sini untuk tempoh yang lebih lama, bukan hanya satu atau dua hari," tambahnya. - BERNAMA

Sorry to say, lately banyak sangat tindakan kurang bijak dari kerajaan PH.
Kenapa lah Tun mahu bekerjasama dengan Ting Pek Khiing, kroni lamanya yang terkenal dengan kontroversi?
Sorry to say, kalaulah pemerintahan PH macam ini, pasti ramai penyokong PH akan mengundi parti lain PRU akan datang.

Ting's company Ekran Bhd was awarded the construction contract for the controversial Bakun Dam in 1994, which was opposed by environmentalists and native rights groups.
The analyst Anil Netto recalls that Bakun's coffer dam collapsed more than 20 times during construction, and the site was said to be jinxed as it was built on native ancestral grave sites.
Ekran encountered financial problems during the East Asian financial crisis in 1998. It was unable to complete the Bakun dam job, but was reportedly compensated a massive RM950mil by the government.
Ting's Plaza Rakyat project, undertaken by Wembley Industries Holdings Bhd, next to the Pudu Raya bus terminal, also ran into problems, recalls Anil.
His companies, Ekran and Wembley, were both eventually delisted and ended up in receivership.
Ting himself was declared a bankrupt by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in 2010.
Now, it looks like Ting is set to rise like a phoenix from the ashes.
