MIRI: President of Advocates Association Sarawak (AAS) Ranbir Singh Sangha hopes that his members and the rest of the legal fraternity will not feel constrained by unwarranted and unsubstantiated criticism on dancing at annual social events such as the opening of Legal Year gala dinners in the future.

“The gala dinner is celebratory tradition for Sabah and Sarawak which also celebrates the achievements of the legal fraternity. The second half of 2018 as well as the beginning of 2019 has given the legal fraternity as a whole a lot of cause to celebrate, especially for the many legal reforms that have been brought about administratively for the benefit of Malaysian public and the legal fraternity,” he said in a press statement today.

He added that these many reforms had been announced in the press and in the speeches of the respective speakers during the opening of the Legal Year both in Putrajaya as well as Kota Kinabalu.

Echoing the views of Sabah Law Society (SLS) president, Brendan Soh, he refuted any suggestion of impropriety as expressed by certain quarters of the video of members of the legal fraternity dancing on stage at the opening of Legal Year Gala Dinner 2019.

“It was done in good taste and we congratulate our host for a job well done.

“We are wholly in agreement with SLS president that the event held is the hallmark of a mature legal community and are equally as disappointed as the SLS that certain quarters are attempting to misinterpret what was a social and harmonious occasion reflective of our East Malaysian hospitality and politicise it for whatever reasons,” he pointed out.

According to Ranbir, large numbers of AAS members including himself attended the opening of the Legal Year 2019 in Kota Kinabalu and the gala dinner that night.

He said those who criticise may not know about the morals and ethics that are culturally held high in East Malaysia at such events.

Ranbir pointed out that the Opening of Legal Year for Sabah and Sarawak is separate from the one held annually for Peninsular Malaysia as the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak is a separate jurisdiction from the High Court of Malaya.

He said the Opening of Legal Year in Sabah and Sarawak has been going on for many years and is an annual event that is held every year alternating between Sabah and Sarawak. The Opening of Legal Year 2018 was held in Miri and next year (2020) it will be held in Sarawak again.

“The AAS will in fact invite the Chief Justice of Malaysia, the Attorney General of Malaysia and judges in attendance to enter into a dance competition with the advocates and other invited guests at the next Opening of Legal Year 2020 to be held in Sarawak,” he said.

On Saturday, a video surfaced of Chief Justice Richard Malanjum, attorney-general Tommy Thomas and de facto law minister Liew Vui Keong dancing to the 1960s tune of ‘Let’s Twist Again’ by American rock ‘n’ roll singer Chubby Checker during the gala dinner organised by the SLS.

This courted criticism from several quarters, who said the judiciary must not fraternise in such a way with the executive.

Soh had said that the only real ‘twist’ is that of the facts and they have faith that our society is similarly mature enough to recognise that the individuals in the video are able to separate their professional life from the personal.

“It would be a sad day for our legal community if members feel constrained from dancing at an annual social occasion such as the Opening of Legal Year Gala Dinner 2019 as a result of such unsubstantiated criticism,” he said in a statement.
