While rescue operations were being carried out to retrieve a car that had plunged into the ocean from the Penang bridge, a man dressed in a black suit attempted suicide by jumping off Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah on 22 January

The victim was caught on camera waving goodbye as he stood on the ledge of the rail before jumping backwards.

The incident happened at KM12.1 of the bridge at 8.30am, New Straits Times reported.

Fortunately, a fisherman had witnessed the incident and rescued the 33-year-old in time

Southwest district police chief Superintendent A.A. Anbalagan revealed that the victim had driven his Perodua Kancil to the bridge and parked by the side of the road before jumping.

"He was then taken to the Marine base in Batu Uban before being sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment. He is in a stable condition," Anbalagan added.

According to interviews with the victim's friends, his wife had asked for a divorce during a recent argument

"The victim suffered from depression," said Anbalagan.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code, which cover suicide attempts.
