Muftis’ support for ‘kafir’ and the silence that followsTajuddin Rasdi -

March 14, 2019 7:40 AM

It was reported that at least two state muftis support the use of the derogatory term “kafir” (infidel) on non-Muslims in Malaysia.

They were responding to a leader from the influential Indonesian Islamic body Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) calling on Muslims not to use the term to refer to non-Muslims.

Back here, Umno Youth’s Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki called for jihad against the “enemies of Islam” after a man was charged with insulting the Prophet, while PAS leaders called on Muslims not to choose non-Muslims as leaders.

In Islamic literature, the term “kafir” is generally understood to mean the enemies of Islam, those who try to cover up the truth of the religion.

This definition is along the views of the late Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the minister in charge of Islamic affairs Mujahid Yusof Rawa, and NU scholars.

But is the definition of kafir based on time and place? If it is temporal, then it is acceptable as it deals with a specific time in history when Muslims were at war with the Persian and Roman empires.

If it’s situational, then it is acceptable only if used on those in antagonism or war against Muslims.

So why did the two muftis say that “kafir” is a normal address for non-Muslims, in total contrast with Mujahid’s view?

Do they think that as they are not under any federal agency, they are free to make enemies of the citizens of Malaysia beyond the purview of our constitution?

I understand that the muftis in Malaysia are powerful, checked only by the sultans.

We respect that because in one sense, they can act as a check and balance when the federal government becomes corrupt.

We have never heard any mufti exercising that sacred duty. But we now hear some muftis “encouraging” the heightened state of religious and racial tension in the country by supporting the “infidel” label on our fellow citizens.

Silence

What about the highly paid academics in public universities? Their salaries come from the government coffers, money from Muslims and non-Muslims.

Where is their responsibility to the millions of Malaysians worried over the rising tide of extremism?

Is it not part of iman or Islamic spirituality to right wrongs? Is it not part of the faith to protect everyone regardless of religion, social status, race or lifestyle from the injustice of a group of Muslims trying to divide this country through their selfish and narrow-minded understanding of Islam?

And why the silence from professors, associate professors and senior lecturers numbering in the thousands? Do they also not understand the concept of Malaysia, Rukun Negara and the simple teaching of being good to your neighbours regardless of race, faith and lifestyle?

Malay academics are comfortable in their daily prayers at the mosque, yearly retreats in Mecca and private devotions during Ramadan. But are these enough to place them in the first of the seven heavens?

The Prophet said that if a man finds a tree branch obstructing a road that may cause harm to people and he does not remove it while he can, this man does not have any iman or faith.

Rituals and prayers that produce a sense of love and care for others is the true measure of one’s faith. It is not making enemies of other peace-loving Malaysians.

So to our leaders, should we allow the two muftis to undermine the idealism of Malaysia?

Academics in the public universities should help reinstate the place of Islam in our constitution and uphold the values of the Rukun Negara. If academics can educate the people, especially Muslims, on the moderate and socially acceptable aspects of Islam, we can thwart whatever extremist views officials or politicians might proclaim.

The present and future peace of Malaysia lies with all of us as responsible citizens and decent human beings in this country.

The views expressed are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect those of FMT.

Adakah lobai cuba menipu?

Goyim is the plural of the Hebrew word goy. The word goy in Heberw means nation. The word The Latin word which became 'gentile' in English is 'gentilis'. This in turn had been derived from 'gens' meaning a clan or tribe.
Gentile simply means non Jew. The English word gentile is a translation of goy, meaning non Jew and originally and contextually in the Torah meaning "nation". Goyim is the plural in Hebrew, Gentiles in English. The words goy and goyim are also used to refer to the nation people, Israel (the Jews) in the Tanakh in several passgtes. "Lo Yisa Goy" is a popular Hebrew folk song, and it is directly from Isaiah Chapter 2 verse 4, proclaiming " nation shall not lift the sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore." a vision of the messianic age.

Neither the word Jew or goy are derogatory words.

Anyone can make any noun into an object of contempt. Unfortunately, some antisemities have even managed to make the noun, Jew, into an adjective.
Unless I'm speaking to fellow Jews..I usually refer to non Jewish people as that..non Jewish..or use the English word gentile. I use gentile only because it is more easily understood. Goy is not derogatory.

The above is an example = explaining that when the word goy is used in the Tanakh to refer to Israel, the English translations usually translate it to mean the literal word it means..nation. But primarily in Christian bible translations when it is referring to other nation people other than the Jewish covenant nation, it will be translated gentile, the English word that is derived from the Latin gentīlis. Gentile has been in the English language since the Middle English period. Both the English word gentile and the French word gentil come from the Latin word.

Here is an example to show what I mean. This is a link to a line by line translation of the Torah. In Genesis Chapter 10 verse 5, you can see that the word goyim is translated nations both times it is found in the following passage.

http://bible.ort.org/books/torahd5.asp?a...
10:5 From these the isolated nations branched out into their lands. Each had its own language for its families in its nations.
Me'eleh niferedu iyey hagoyim be'artsotam ish lileshono lemishpechotam begoyehem

hagoyim ha=the goyim = nations
begoyehem = in its nations

Nirmano niraham karah, sama dukha-sukhah ksami
Terjemahannya:
Dia yang tidak membenci segala makhluk, bersahabat, dan cinta kasih
Bebas dari keakuan dan keangkuhan, sama dalam suka dan duka, serta pemberi maaf.
Di dalam Yajur Veda 26.2, disebutkan:
mitrasya ma caksusa sarvani bhutani samiksantam, mitarsya aham caksusa saruani bhutani samikse, mistrasya caksusa samisamahe
Terjemahannya:
Mohon dikoreksi bersama. Suksma…

Bila kalimah Allah, kamu nak guna pakai utk agama kamu. Tapi bila term kafir kenapa xboleh diguna pakai? 2-2 ada dalam al quran.

Apa sakit otak arkitek sorang ni? Tulah, baru jengah sejadah 3 x jumaat berturut2 dah rasa hebat.

Arabic Root of the Word Kafir
The word ‘Kafir’ comes from the root ‘KFR’ (to cover, something covered), and the root has 525 cognates in the Quran. The most common cognate of the the root KFR is the word ‘Kufr’, which has the literal meaning ‘to cover’. However, the context of how it is used in the Quran generally determines its meaning, and this is what the this article will attempt to show.

The Quran mostly uses the term Kufr to mean ‘disbelief, a rejection of true belief’ (as in: to ‘cover’ the truth). So for example, the Quran describes polytheism as ‘Kufr’, which means that belief in it, means a rejection of the reality that there is only One God. Of course, a human cannot change reality simply by believing it isn’t what it is, so the Quranic term ‘kufr’, means that a rejector simply covers over the truth from their view.

Conversely, the Quran also uses the cognate of KFR, for the terms Kaffira, or Kaffara, to refer to forgiveness and the removing of sin (Quran 3:193), or expiation of sin (Quran 5:45). This would seem to be connected as a ‘covering’ up of Sin, by God blotting it out (hence removing it), or by means of doing a good deed (hence an expiation of the sin).

The Quranic Uses of the Word Kafir
The word ‘kafir’, and its plural, occurs over 153 times in the Quran. The word literally means in Arabic ‘someone that covers’. Its literal meaning is therefore not ‘disbeliever’, but is used to convey a number of different meanings depending on the context of the Arabic sentence.

The word ‘Kafir’ is used at different times to mean different things in the Quran, here are some examples of its different usages below:

‘Kafir’ used in the literal sense in the Quran
The word Kafir refers to something that covers who physically covers something. This has been used in the Quran to refer to farmers, who cover seeds in the earth when they till (e.g. Quran 57:20).

Tapi problem dengan lobai ni meraka melihat  kafir dengan pandangan negative. Itu yang tak bagusnya.
Dan juga waktu ceramah agama di mesjid suka memburukan agama lain, suka membandingkan agama lain dengan agama islam. Seolah orang lobai melayu tidak begitu yakin dengan agama mereka anuti.
