Lorry driver charged with insulting Malays and Islam
GEORGE TOWN: A lorry driver from Puchong, Selangor, has been charged with misusing internet services by posting a message against Malays and Islam on Facebook two months ago.
Karitikesoo Valu, 43, from Bandar Kinrara, was charged with committing the offence on Jan 23 using the Facebook account of “Suresh Don Don”.
He was charged under Section 233 (1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000, one year’s jail, or both upon conviction.
His post, which was read out in full in court today, was said to be insulting to the Malays and claimed, among others, that the non-Malays would take over the country following Pakatan Harapan’s victory at the polls last year.
It also said that the number of mosques would be reduced, the call to prayer limited, and more pork hurled into mosque compounds.
Karitikesoo pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read out to him.
His lawyer Sukhindarpal Singh, from the Legal Aid Centre, told the court that Karitikesoo is his family’s sole breadwinner, and that he has five children.
He said his wife was on the way from Puchong to post bail for him after he was picked up by the police in the morning.
However, judge Norsalha Hamzah denied bail and set April 23 for mention.
