Pada tahun 1951 Dean berpindah ke NYC dan diterima masuk ke Actors Studio di bawah selian Lee Strasberg. Mereka dikatakan tidak sebulu.
Karier Dean mula berkembang dan mula membuat kemunculan di kaca tv di dlm rancangan Kraft Television Theatre, Omnibus and General Electric Theater.
Melalui program tv 'Hill Number One: A Story of Faith and Inspiration dgn melakonkan watak John the Apostle Dean mula mempunyai fan club.
The fledgling actor was also garnering a reputation for being unstructured in his technique, though the work continued to come. |

Pengarah Elia Kazan memilih Dean selepas Dean berjumpa dengan novelist tersebut.Many of Dean's scenes in the film were unscripted improvisations. Seterusnya Dean melakonkan watak agonized teenager Jim Stark ( 1955) di dalam filem Rebel Without a Cause.
Melalui filem ini beliau telah memberi nafas baru kepada budaya Amerika.
