New insights into how exercise can lift mood in depression
Published        Today By Catharine Paddock        Fact checked by Gianna D'Emilio

There is growing evidence that exercise can help to treat symptoms of depression and lift mood, although the reasons have been unclear. Now, a new study finds that the body's endocannabinoid system may play a role.

New research helps explain why exercise improves mood.
The researchers propose that a better appreciation of the relationship between exercise, mood, and the endocannabinoid system could result in better treatments for depression.

The study investigated changes in mood and endocannabinoid levels in people with major depression who exercised at different intensities on a stationary bike.

The investigators found a significant increase in endocannabinoid levels and improvement in mood after a session of prescribed exercise of moderate intensity.

The endocannabinoid system is a cell signaling system comprising the body's own cannabinoids, or endocannabinoids, and receptors. It extends throughout the body and influences the function of the immune, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

When a particular endocannabinoid binds to a matching cell receptor, it sends a signal into the cell that alters its behavior and functioning

Have Gout? Watch Your Food!
Gout, one of the oldest forms of arthritis, can attack very suddenly and are very painful experiences. It usually starts from the big toe. Left untreated, the pain may spread to the ankle, foot, knee, elbow and hand.

Attacks may also become more frequent and more intense, and slowly affect your kidneys. In the long term, your joint will become damaged, resulting in pain and disability.

If you have gout, your doctor will definitely advise you to watch your diet closely and avoid a high purine diet to reduce a build-up of uric acid in the body. Here’s what you need to know about uric acid:

What is it?

Uric acid is a natural byproduct that happens in the body when various chemical processes take place. This uric acid is disposed of in the kidneys. Gout happens when the kidneys are not functioning well, hence the uric acid accumulates in the joints or skin. Over time, these uric acid form crystals, that cause intense pain when inflamed.

Will I get gout?

Gout tends to run in the family, so you are at higher risk of you have a family history of gout. It tends to be more common in men. Women tend to get gout after menopause. Gout is also more common among those who are:

  • Overweight
  • Don’t drink enough water
  • Have high cholesterol levels, hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease.
  • Drink a lot of alcohol
  • Often go on crash diets
  • Excessive intake of high-purine foods

Treatment

Treatment is categorized into medications and lifestyle changes. Medications include painkillers such as NSAIDs and corticosteroids, uric acid lowering medications such as allopurinol, and colchicines to control inflammation. Long term lifestyle changes include increased water intake (at least 2 litres daily), weight reduction, taking regular meals and avoiding high-purine foods that can trigger an attack.

Food to avoid:

  • Sardines
  • Anchovies
  • Kidney, liver, brain or internal organs
  • Meat and meat extracts
  • Seafood esp. prawns, crabs, mussels
  • Beans
  • Alcohol: beer, wine, vodka

Managing a restricted diet

Malaysia being a food paradise, avoiding certain food may seem like a tall order for many gout patients. But everyone’s body is different, so what may trigger an attack in, say, your father, may be harmless for you. You need to identify what triggers your gout attacks. Also, you need not stop eating everything all at once. Just take smaller portions or just have a few bites of your favourite foods and slowly wean yourself off.

What to do in a gout attack

Attacks can last for a few days to a week. See a doctor as soon as you get an attack to get medicine for the joint swelling and pain. Keep the affected foot elevated above your head and place a hot pack or cold pad around it. Never leave gout untreated as it can have other more serious repercussions such as increased attacks, joint damage, kidney disease and development of ‘tophi’, soft tissue swellings filled with uric acid crystals.

How to have a happy, healthy colon

Here are key steps you can take to maintain a happy, healthy colon

A healthy colon is vital. When you have an unhealthy colon, it could lead to a series of disorders which can greatly disrupt your quality of life. Some of these disorders include Colitis (inflammation of the colon), Crohn’s Disease (inflammation of the colon and intestines which could cause pain and bloody stools) and yes, colon cancer.

Your colon is also known as the large intestine. The start of your colon, which is called the ileum, is connected to your small intestines and the end of it is known as the rectum. The colon’s main role is to absorb the needed water, from food which passes salt and nutrients through the colon. Food and which is not absorbed by the body will then be formed into stools that are eliminated through the anus.

The walls of your colon consist of muscles that contract and relax, creating an effect that allows the content in the colon to move along and be removed. Billions of bacteria live in your colon. These bacteria aid the absorption of nutrients. Here are some key steps and lifestyle adjustments you can make to maintain a healthy colon.

Ideal numbers

Maintaining a healthy weight reduces your risk of many diseases and this includes colon related conditions. According to the American Cancer Society, there is a strong link between your weight, diet and colon cancer. As a matter of fact, 50 to 75 percent of colon cancer can be prevented by sticking to a healthy lifestyle. So, be vigilant when it comes to your body mass index (BMI) as obesity is a major risk factor for colon cancer. A healthy BMI level is between 18.5 to 24.9. If your BMI reading is not within this range, take the necessary steps to get it where it needs to be so you can improve your colon health and reduce your risk of colon cancer.

‘Yes’ to fibre

High fibre meals generally benefit your overall colon and intestinal health. Fibre helps you to maintain a healthy colon by encouraging regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. Constipation is not only uncomfortable and painful, it also increases your risk of hemorrhoids and the formation of small pouches in your colon which can lead to diverticular disease; classified as an inflamed and infected colon. Malaysians are recommended to consume at least 2 servings of fruits and three servings of vegetables, daily.  Some fibre-rich foods are bananas, broccoli, oranges and pears. You should also focus on consuming natural food sources as not only does it provide the fibre content you need but vitamins and nutrients as well, which are important for your health.

Limit the red

Red meat such as beef, lamb and pork as well as processed meat (bacon, sausages and burger patties) can affect your colon health and increase your risk of colon cancer. The American Cancer Society states that for every 100 grams of red meat consumed, your risk of colon cancer increases by 15 to 20 percent! However, this does not mean that you should completely exclude red meat from your diet. While you can (and should) do without processed food, you can continue to consume red meat as long as it is limited to two portions of 113 grams a week.

Choose wholegrain

Wholegrain contains essential nutrients such as antioxidants, vitamins, essential fatty acids and fibre. Wholegrain also has higher nutritional content and is more beneficial to your colon health compared to refined grains such as white rice and flour. Wholegrain prevents constipation which helps to protect your colon. Besides being beneficial for your colon, wholegrain also contains less starch which is great news if you are watching your weight, insulin level and heart health.

Reduce the sweetness

According to RUSH University Medical Centre in the United States, patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease consume a diet that is high in sugar and low in fibre. Taking simple but important steps such as reducing added sugar in your diet is one way you can limit and control your sugar intake. So, the next time you head to the coffee shop or mamak, be sure to order drinks that do not contain any added sugar. This rule applies to condensed milk as well as granulated sugar. You should also remember that sugar is often hidden in all kinds of food. For example, tomato ketchup contains a lot of sugar and so do sauces such as barbeque sauce. So, be aware of the food contents in every bite that you take.

Focus on the good bacteria

Probiotics, also known as good bacteria, can be found in food such as yoghurt, kimchi and in the form of supplements. Researchers are still trying to determine if probiotics benefit your overall gut health. However, it was discovered, in a 2012 study conducted by researchers from Yale University, that probiotics can help to prevent diarrhoea caused by antibiotics and manage symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well as Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Speak to your healthcare provider to find out if probiotics is appropriate for you.

Your diet choices and lifestyle can have a huge positive impact on all aspects of your health including your colon. So, take charge of your life and make the changes that will lead to a healthy and happy colon.

Get screened!

A colonoscopy is an examination of your colon which allows your physician to identify the presence of any abnormalities in your colon such as polyps. A colonoscopy is also one of the best methods to identify early stages of colon cancer. According to RUSH University Medical Centre, 95 percent of colon cancers are curable when detected early. So, be sure to include a colonoscopy when it’s time for your routine health screening. Consult your doctor to find out more.

Study links insomnia genes to heart disease, stroke risk
Published        Today By Yella Hewings-Martin PhD        Fact checked by Isabel Godfrey

Scientists used data from more than 1.6 million people to link insomnia genes to a higher risk of heart disease and stroke but not atrial fibrillation.
Insomnia link to heart disease
Does insomnia contribute to heart disease, or is heart disease a contributing factor for insomnia?
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with stroke coming in at number five.

Maintaining a healthy heart is central to preventing heart or cardiovascular disease (CVD), and our sleep is part of this strategy.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise that "most adults need at least 7 hours of sleep each night."

But what links sleep to our hearts?

Experts have previously identified associations between poor sleep and heart disease.

Earlier this year, Medical News Today featured a study that identified a significantly greater risk of death from heart disease in people who had high blood pressure together with insomnia and stress.

So, what can another study add to the picture?

Most population studies look for associations, but they cannot pinpoint cause and effect. While it may make sense to many people that poor sleep causes poor heart health, there is little data to confirm which is the chicken and which is the egg.

A new study aims to do just that.

Japan team transplants stem cells into brain to treat Parkinson’s

Japanese researchers said they have transplanted stem cells into the brain of a patient in the first stage of an innovative trial to cure Parkinson’s disease.

The research team at Kyoto University injected induced Pluripotent Stem (iPS) cells – which have the potential to develop into any cell in the body – into the brain of a male patient in his fifties, the university said in a press release.

The man was stable after the operation, which was performed last month, and he will now be monitored for two years, the university added.
The researchers injected 2.4 million iPS cells into the left side of the patient’s brain, in an operation that took about three hours.

If no problems are observed in the coming six months, they will implant another 2.4 million cells into the right side.

The iPS cells from healthy donors have been developed into the precursors of dopamine-producing brain cells, which are no longer present in people with Parkinson’s disease.
The operation came after the university announced in July they would carry out the trial with seven participants aged between 50 and 69.

It is the first involving implanting stem cells into the brain to cure Parkinson’s.

“I appreciate the patients for participating in the trial with courage and determination,” Kyoto University professor Jun Takahashi told reporters, according to public broadcaster NHK.
Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects the body’s motor system, often causing shaking and other difficulties in movement. Worldwide, about 10 million people have the illness, according to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Currently available therapies “improve symptoms without slowing or halting the disease progression”, the foundation says.

The human trial comes after an earlier trial involving monkeys. Researchers announced last year that primates with Parkinson’s symptoms regained significant mobility after iPS cells were inserted into their brains. They also confirmed that the iPS cells had not transformed into tumours during the two years after the implant.

iPS cells are created by stimulating mature, already specialised, cells back into a juvenile state – basically cloning without the need for an embryo. The cells can be transformed into a range of different types of cells, and their use is a key sector of medical research. – AFP Relaxnews

Why A Baby Cries?
Colostrum Naturally Helps with Tummy Upset
Whenever a baby cries, it has a very good reason to do so. What most parents don’t know is that in vast majority of the cases their baby cries because of some tummy issues. In the US, each child will have had 7-15 episodes of diarrhea by the age of 5 years, say researchers writing in Scientific Reports whose study finds that supplementing bovine colostrum (BC) helps to prevent future episodes of childhood infectious diarrhea.

What Causes Childhood Diarrhea?
Acute infectious diarrhea, frequently caused by the rotovirus, is one of the more common childhood diseases worldwide, especially in the first three years of life. Nine percent of all hospitalizations of children less than five-years old are associated with diarrhea, and 300-500 children die each year from this potentially preventable condition.

What Is Colostrum?
Colostrum is the golden milky fluid that all newborn mammals receive upon birth in order to fortify their immunity and growth. BC is a source of immunoglobulins that can enhance resistance to the virus. It is available commercially in powder form as a dietary supplement.

Why Colostrum?
In this pooled analysis of five randomly controlled trials, BC consumption correlated with a “significant reduction in stool frequency of infectious diarrhea by 1.42 times per day.” Bovine colostrum intervention also reduced occurrence of future cases of diarrhea by 71%.

The study concludes: “Bovine colostrum significantly reduced stool frequency, occurrence of diarrhea and pathogen detection. BC and related products have a significant benefit in reducing the frequency and relieving the symptoms of childhood infectious diarrhea.”

Giving your baby powdered BC, which looks and tastes like dry milk or a regular baby powder, with their first foods could reduce the risk of this largely preventable childhood disease. Look for a first-milking product that is richest in immunoglobulins that bolster your child’s defenses against the rotavirus, and talk to your pediatrician.

Blocking key protein could treat chronic pain

Published        Just now By Lauren Sharkey        Fact checked by Paula Field

New research in mice suggests that targeting a particular protein in the spinal cord could form the basis of a new pain relief medication that could relieve chronic pain for thousands of people.

Approximately 20% of adults in the U.S. are currently living with chronic pain.
About one-fifth of adults in the United States are living with chronic pain, which is a pain that lasts for longer than 3 months. However, one specific type of chronic pain is of particular concern — neuropathic pain.

Neuropathic pain results from nerve injury and around 10% of the U.S. population may be living with it. Due to rising life expectancy and contributory lifestyle factors, estimates suggest that this figure will increase.

Neuropathic pain has a range of causes, including physical injury to the nerves that send information between the spinal cord and brain, viral infections, conditions such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis, medication side effects, and excessive alcohol consumption.

The cause does not alter the fact that doctors find this type of pain challenging to treat. It can also significantly impact a person's life, with symptoms ranging from burning and tingling to stabbing and stinging.

Traditional pain relief medications are often ineffective against neuropathic pain. As assistant professor Mette Richner from Aarhus University, Denmark, puts it, people with neuropathic pain can try a shopping basket of medications "without ever really getting any good results."

But Richner and a team from the university have identified a protein that could be an effective target for pain relieving drugs. A decade's worth of research spurred the new study, published in the journal Science Advances.
