APART from fires that occur almost every year at peat swamp forests during the drought season, their ecological importance is rarely highlighted in the media.
These unique forests are found in the lowlands, where waterlogged soil prevents dead leaves and wood from fully decomposing.
Over time, the organic matter turns into a thick layer of acidic peat.
In many areas, peat swamp forests are surrounded by rainforests, or by saltwater mangroves near the coast.
The Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest (SEPPSF) is among the most outstanding in the country. |

With a sheer size of 160,000 hectares, it stretches from south Kuantan all the way to Pekan and the Pahang-Johor border.
Believed to be the largest in Asia, it will soon be turned into the main ecotourism attraction in the country under a project that will involve the Orang Asli community.
Tourism Pahang has already sent its team, comprising officers and tour agents, to find the best way to promote SEPPSF without jeopardising the natural flora and fauna.
The SEPPSF is home to 63 species of mammals and more than 200 birds, including eight species of hornbills.

It is also easy to find durian paya, scientifically known as Durio carinatus, which is an important food source for a wide range of animals, such as hornbills and flying foxes. Studies show that one of the largest colonies of flying foxes in the country can be found in the Nenasi area of the SEPPSF.
Tourism Pahang general manager Ishak Mokhtar says SEPPSF has the potential to become a leading eco-tourism product like the popular Everglades tropical wetlands in Florida, the United States.
In fact, he says, the local peat swamp forest in Pahang has more attractions that can lure nature lovers and tourists from all over world.

“We aim to create awareness on the importance of peat swamp forests and why we must conserve these areas, which are known as ‘black water jewels’.”
Peat swamp forests are called “black water jewels” because of their dark brown or black waters, which is caused by a high content of organic matter.
Ishak says the ecotourism project can help improve the living standard of about 2,000 Orang Asli villagers by roping them in as nature guides and boat operators. Tourists can visit their village in Runchang and buy handicraft.
Runchang is the most suitable location for the ecotourism project as it is located 14km from the Kuantan-Muadzam Shah road.
There is a 7km stretch of tarred road from the main road, while the remaining dirt road requires tourists to take a four-wheel-drive vehicle. |
