Thousands to lose jobs in fresh round of lay-offs as media crunch continues
November 1, 2019 1:30 PM

PETALING JAYA: Thousands of workers could be part of a fresh round of retrenchment exercises in the media industry, less than a month after the closure of two popular Malay dailies which saw some 2,000 losing their jobs.

It is understood that a conglomerate which has been operating multiple media platforms with nationwide reach is looking at reducing its number of staff to one-third of its current size.

Sources also told FMT that senior managers have been called for a meeting today to announce retrenchment plans.

“The details of the exercise will be laid out and could affect more than 2,500 employees,” said one source with knowledge of the matter.

It is also learnt that at least 500 editorial staff will be affected by the decision.

This latest move in a spate of company shutdowns and resizing exercises is seen as a signal that the media industry is far from recovery.

On Oct 9, Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo! announced their final appearance at news stands nationwide after publisher Utusan Melayu Bhd went into liquidation.

It was reported that the company would need RM400 million to settle its debts and liabilities, and to pay compensation and outstanding salaries owed to more than 1,500 former employees.

It was also reported that Berjaya Media, which publishes theSun newspaper, will be delisted from Bursa Malaysia next week. On Wednesday, the company’s shares plunged 58.54% (12 sen), its sharpest fall in history.

Media Prima’s shares close at five-month low after lay-off rumours
Friday, 01 Nov 2019 05:38 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Media conglomerate Media Prima Bhd’s shares fell to 35 sen per unit at market closing today, amid rumours of a new round of downsizing earlier today.

The share price is its lowest since June this year.

By comparison, it had opened at 36.5 sen per unit earlier today.

Media Prima’s shares have not risen above the 40 sen per unit threshold since mid-October, despite hovering near the 48 sen per unit mark between July and early last month.

The price of its shares fell in mid-October after an announcement on October 9 that Aurora Mulia Sdn Bhd, linked to tycoon Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar al-Bukhary, had gained close to one-third of its stake.

Earlier today, financial paper The Edge reported that a meeting among heads of departments was called this afternoon to discuss the outcome of a board of director's meeting earlier this morning.

Malay Mail understands the meeting is still ongoing and staff members have not been informed of its decision.

It is rumoured that the company will axe as much as one-third of its workforce.

Last year, its subsidiary and TV3 station operator, Sistem Televisyen Malaysia Bhd, retrenched 190 employees by giving them three months' notice, while mutual separation schemes were offered to 43 others.

In the second quarter of the year, Media Prima posted a net loss of RM8.83 million, as traditional revenue segments, including publishing and television networks, have seen lowered contributions.

It has seen a string of quarterly losses since the third quarter of 2016, with the exception of the fourth quarter of that year, and the second and fourth quarter of 2018.

Media Prima owns the New Straits Times Press (Malaysia) Berhad, with the newspapers New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro under it, as well as four television channels, TV3, NTV7, 8TV and TV9.

this is starting on industries yg fokus kepada buyer especially on advertising. Rantaian business makin lama makin gelap.

Media Prima assures fair compensation for affected employees
01 Nov 2019 / 19:19 H.

KUALA LUMPUR: Media Prima Bhd, which is reportedly planning a retrenchment, will ensure that all affected employees of its “restructuring” receive a fair and equitable compensation package governed by the law and respective union requirements.

The group said the compensation will be paid in full upon the fulfilment of all legal requirements.

“The group will also provide support to staff which includes job outplacement services and career counselling,“ Media Prima said in a statement.

The media group said it is embarking on the next phase of its “business transformation exercise”, including changing its business model and restructuring internally to enable the group to be future proofed and sustainable given the uncertain macroeconomic conditions and disruptive changes in the global and local media sector.

“The restructuring exercise is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2020.”

It said the global media landscape continues to change at a rapid pace and scale, requiring media companies to review and disrupt its own business model to remain sustainable and successful.

“Moving forward, the group will continue to focus on bringing value to its employees, customers, shareholders and stakeholders at large.”

In the first six months ended June 30, 2019, Media Prima posted a net loss of RM49.23 million compared with a net profit of RM10.13 million in the same period last year, while revenue fell 14% to RM535.87 million from RM623.04 million.

Orang2 NSTP dan Utusan pergi la ambil Kursus Bahasa Jepun.

Next year Jepun akan start pengambilan pekerja dari Malaysia.

Syaratnya cuma Lulus Peperiksaan Bahasa Jepun
