Financial executive poorer by RM135,000 after being conned by 'Dutch engineer'

KEPALA BATAS: A financial executive was cheated of RM135,000 by a ‘friend’ she met through the social media.

The 37-year-old victim had befriended the man, believed to be a Dutch national, who claimed to be an engineer

Seberang Prai Utara district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said the smooth talking suspect, had managed to convince the victim that he had an ongoing construction project in Miri, Sarawak.

“The suspect told the victim that he would be coming to Malaysia to visit her, and at the same time, invited her to join in his business venture, which promised handsome returns.

“Convinced, the victim banked in the sum in several transactions into several bank accounts provided by the suspect.

“The victim only realised she was duped after suffering huge losses,” he said.

Norzainy said the victim had never met the suspect and had only conversed with him through social media and the telephone.

The case is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Noorzainy advised people not to easily fall for offers made by individuals they meet online.
