Local airlines allow full refund or travel date change
    Saturday, 08 Feb 2020

PETALING JAYA: In light of the novel coronavirus outbreak, all Malaysian airline companies are allowing passengers to defer their flights to China without penalty, while those who cancel will get a full refund. However, the change of dates or refunds is only available for bookings to and from China.

Even as AirAsia flights to and from Wuhan remain suspended until Feb 29, the company has extended its period for a full refund for those with flight bookings to and from other parts in China, Hong Kong and Macau. That means passengers scheduled to fly to and from these places can change to a different flight without paying a fee until March 1.

They can opt to travel on another day on the same route within 30 days from the original flight time.

“This is applicable to those affected by cancelled flights and when travel restrictions are imposed, ” said a spokesperson.

A full refund is also applicable for all flights to and from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau until March 1 ticketed prior to Jan 28.

Alternatively, passengers can retain the fare value in their AirAsia BIG Loyalty online credit account for future travel, which should be redeemed within 90 days.

“We are monitoring the situation closely. We will update the travel advisory from time to time in our newsletters, ” the spokesperson said.Malaysia Airlines is allowing passengers to defer their travel dates up to May 31 with no fees.

“Passengers with confirmed tickets from Jan 28 to Feb 29 to and from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Xiamen in China will be allowed a one-time flight change or cancellation with a full refund.

“For bookings to other places than China, flight change or cancellation will follow normal group policy, ” said a spokesperson, adding that refunds were only applicable to those travelling to and from China.Malindo Air passengers with tickets to and from points in mainland China and Hong Kong issued on or before Jan 24 to Feb 29 can change their travel time for free or get a full refund in terms of vouchers or cash.Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) president Datuk Tan Kok Liang lauded the airlines for allowing passengers to change or cancel their flights.

“Although it is not a highly fatal disease, the sharing of all sorts of news on social media has made people fearful to travel. More needs to be done to allay such fears, ” he said.Tan said the government should give flexibility to tourism industry players and workers in terms of taxes and statutory deductions.

“The travel sector, which includes tour and transport operators, provides vital links for all tourism services but are now in dire straits and in urgent need of aid, ” he said.

Tan also called on the government to look into reducing or halting contributions and taxes such as the mandatory Employees Provident Fund, Human Resources Development Fund, tourism tax, road tax and fees for various company licences and vehicle permits.

“Financial institutions could give out special loans, reduce interest rates or allow deferment in loans repayment as tour buses are idle more often than running.

“This will give cash flow flexibility to companies and allow workers to have more cash in hand to pay for their commitments, ” he said.

He added that MATTA would announce several domestic strategies to offset the adverse effects on the tourism industry next week.

Lim Yau Mien, who operates Sky Mirror Tour and Travel Sdn Bhd, which has hosted China tourists to visit Kuala Selangor for four years, said he had lost more than 90% of his customers since the outbreak.

He has had to create more tours to lure domestic travellers and offset the loss, adding: “I have 50 workers and must make sure we go on.”
