Malaysia the worst in Asean in handling Covid-19, says Najib

Malaysia can no longer claim it is among the countries that have been successful in containing the Covid-19 pandemic, says Najib Razak.

In the wake of the recent surge in infections, the former prime minister said the country missed the opportunity to better manage the third wave in October when Putrajaya refused to ban interstate travel and impose stricter measures.

Singapore, on the other hand, took sterner action to contain the spread among the migrant workers, he said, including quarantining the community in dormitories and preventing them from working until they were Covid-19 free.

The island republic had in April recorded a sudden spike in cases involving mostly foreign workers.

Najib said that due to such measures, the local transmission in Singapore was the lowest although its Covid-19 statistics were much higher by percentage due to the size of its population.

Malaysia, he said, had the worst record of local transmission in Asean, even surpassing the Philippines last week.

“We can no longer claim that Malaysia is among the nations that are successful in containing Covid.

“We need to learn from our mistakes and realise that stricter measures in the early stages could have prevented a calamity in the long run,” he said in a Facebook post.

Najib had earlier this month told the Perikatan Nasional government to admit it had failed to manage the pandemic in the country, following a record-high spike in new cases.

To date, the country has reported 165,371 cases and 619 deaths.
