Israeli planes renewed air strikes in Gaza early on Saturday and Hamas in Gaza responded by firing rockets into Israel as their battle entered a fifth night.

I see an uprising, said one protester in Sydney, Walla Abu-Eid. I see people who are no longer going to remain silent. People who are fed up, people who are responding to oppression and violence by standing up for themselves.

In Melbourne, protesters gathered at the State Library of Victoria and then marched to Parliament House, many carrying Free Palestine posters.

At least 132 people have been killed in Gaza since Monday, including 32 children and 21 women, Palestinian medical officials said.

Eight people have been killed in Israel, including six civilians, among them two children, Israeli authorities said. Reuters

Israeli hit on Gaza refugee camp kills 10, including 8 children

Those killed at the Shati refugee camp were family members, Palestinian rescuers and relatives say.

Gaza City CAt least 10 member of a Palestinian family C two women and eight children C have been killed by an Israeli air raid on their home in the Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, following the fifth night of relentless bombardment of the besieged enclave.

In the early hours of Saturday, rescue workers were digging through the rubble of the Abu Hatab family home where more people are believed to be buried.

At least 15 people were also wounded in the air raid, including an infant named Omar.

Nabil Abu Al Reesh, a doctor treating survivors at al-Shifa Hospital, said responders are still trying to recover more bodies and figure out who is who.

This is truly a massacre that cannot be described, he told Al Jazeera.

A man who identified himself as a cousin of the owner of the house told Al Jazeera the attack happened without any warning.

We ran outside; we saw the four-storey house get completely demolished. It was completely levelled, he said.

He added the homeowners sister and children were visiting when the attack occurred.

They were all killed, he said. All of them.

A boy who was wounded in the attack told Al Jazeera from the hospital that the missiles hit and the windows got shattered.

It hit our head. We got wounded, he said. We started running barefoot and my sister left all our belongings behind.

Funerals for the family were held early Saturday.

14 May 2021

Lebanese protester killed by Israeli troops at border

UNIFIL says it has launched an investigation into the incident, and increased its presence at the border alongside the Lebanese army.

A Lebanese man was shot and killed by Israeli troops after he and others protesting in support of Palestinians tried to cross a security fence on the border with Israel, Lebanons state news agency NNA reported.

NNA said another person was wounded on Friday after protesters gathered along the border in a show of solidarity with Palestinians as Israel continued a relentless bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip.

Lebanons Marjayoun Governmental Hospital told Al Jazeera that 21-year-old Mohammad Tahhan had died of his wounds. The condition of the second protester was not immediately known.

Earlier, the Israeli military said a number of people in Lebanon had damaged the border fence and set fire to a field. They retreated after Israeli tanks fired warning shots.

The Lebanese protesters had gathered close to the fence, waving flags, including the Palestinian national flag and the flag of Lebanons Iran-backed Hezbollah movement, a staunch opponent of Israel.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun said in a statement he strongly condemned the crime committed by Israeli forces.

The protesters were later dispersed by the Lebanese army in the presence of UNIFIL, the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon that monitors the boundary with Israel, a witness said.

UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Teneti said in the statement they launched an investigation into the incident, and have increased their presence at the border alongside the Lebanese army.

We are aware of reports that a Lebanese civilian was killed along the Blue Line near Kafer Kila today during a confrontation with the IDF, the statement read. Any loss of life is tragic, and we urge everyone to remain calm and avoid further escalating the situation and risking more lives.

Hezbollah released after the incident, saying that he died as a martyr.

On Thursday, three rockets were fired from southern Lebanon near the Palestinian refugee camp of Rashidiyeh towards Israel, a Lebanese military source said. Israels army said the rockets landed in the sea.

A source close to Hezbollah said the Lebanese Shia group had no link to the incident.

Additional reporting by Kareem Chehayeb in Beirut.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/15/far-right-jewish-groups-arab-youths-claim-streets-lod-israel-loses-control

Far-right Jewish groups and Arab youths claim streets of Lod as Israel loses control

Lods mayor has described events as a civil war with city filled with rocks, burnt cars and armed police in riot gear

A smell of petrol lingered in the air and the synagogues metal gate had been completely ripped from its hinges. Inside, a small room filled with colourful books for children had been blackened by smoke. Outside, the skeletons of palm trees stood charred, save for a few bits of green at the top.

Those animals destroyed and burnt, said Eytan Schnur of his Arab neighbours, who, he said, had torched the Jewish house of worship on Thursday night. We will rebuild; well build it bigger."

The synagogue was the fifth to have been burnt this week in Lod, a city in central Israel that has become the focal point of a vicious and rapid rise in communal violence that has spread across the country and which the government has failed to control.

Videos shared online have shown a terrified Arab family attempting to keep men from barging through the front door, Palestinians beating Jewish Israelis, and girls waving Israeli flags and dancing outside a smashed-up Arab-owned shop.

Far-right Jewish Israelis, often armed with pistols and operating in full view of police, have moved into mixed areas this week. In messages shared by one online Jewish supremacist group, Jews were called to flood into Lod. Dont come without any instrument for personal protection, one message read.

Amir Ohana, the public security minister, has encouraged vigilantism, that law-abiding citizens carrying weapons were an aid to authorities. He made the comments after a suspected Jewish gunman was accused of killing an Arab man in Lod. The minister, without presenting evidence, said it was in self-defence.

[size=1.0625]

Since then, attacks have intensified. One video, apparently taken by an Arab resident, showed two Jewish Israelis filling bottles with petrol at a service station next to a white car. The police are right next to them, said a voice off-camera.

Police say they are working to prevent riots and disturbances. A history of violent crime in Lod has meant some Arab residents are armed. Israeli media have reported at least two Jewish Israelis, including a paramedic, have been shot this week.

Lods mayor, Yair Revivo, has described events there as a civil war, and the city of 80,000 people looks that way. Streets are filled with rocks and the husks of burnt cars. Most people remain indoors, and heavily armed police in riot gear loiter on pavements. Authorities have declared a rare state of emergency, imposed night-time curfews, and brought in forces from the occupied West Bank.

Many Israeli officials argue that Palestinian citizens of Israel, who make up about 20% of the population, are treated equally, feel a part of the country, and care more about jobs and economic security than they do the status and fate of non-citizen Palestinians in the neighbouring occupied West Bank and Gaza

That logic came crashing down this week.

Decades of discrimination escalating bombardment in and out of Gaza and an emboldened hardline far-right buoyed up by mainstream Israeli politicians has fractured any sense of coexistence.

In Israel, local media is calling what is happening an internal intifada.

Animals are living over here, repeated Schnur, 37, who works in the diamond trade, pointing to apartments next to the synagogue. I have Arab friends [but] the people between 20- to 30 years old, they are starting to be much more extreme.

Behind him, a teenage boy at the synagogue calls out, Kill them, before walking away.

Lods Arab community is the descendants of Palestinians who stayed in the country after the 1948 war surrounding Israels creation, when an estimated 700,000 others were expelled or fled. While life has long been relatively calm in Lod, known as Lydda in Arabic, deep-seated problems have boiled under the surface.

Mirroring Palestinian voices around Israel C and certainly in Jerusalem and the West Bank C Israels Arab minority in Lod have accused police of unnecessarily rough tactics in the face of peaceful demonstrations.

Mohammad Abu Shuraiki, 65, said attempts by Arabs in Lod to hold prayers this week in solidarity with the hundreds of Palestinians wounded by police at Jerusalems al-Aqsa mosque[/url]
were met with sound grenades and teargas canisters.

Meanwhile, like many poor, mixed cities around Israel, Lod has been targeted by Jewish settler groups which C while primarily seeking to take land in the Palestinian territories C want to strengthen the Jewish presence of Israeli towns.

The community from the torched synagogue is part of that movement, hoping to increase the Jewish majority population of Lod even further in their favour. Their synagogue stands in the heart of an Arab neighbourhood and close to a mosque. Today we have 50 families, and its going to be 100 families, 200 families, said Schur.

On Thursday morning, while ignoring the fire damage, the synagogue was filled instead with dusty, sweating men determined on a different goal C to expand. Within 20 minutes, they had broken through a wall and built a new room using prefabricated walls. As a result, the synagogue had grown in size by a quarter.

A lot of volunteers came here this morning We are very strong over here. We are not afraid. We believe in our country. We believe this is ours.

Samah Al-Kadaim, 28, a supermarket worker, lives in a gated house across the street from the synagogue. She said the citys Arabs had been sharing messages of alleged mob attacks this week.

We received messages telling us that buses were coming with religious Jews who were coming to burn our houses, she said. That they will hurt us; that they will get into our house. In response, men from the community had come to guard families, she said.

Asked if she felt protected by police, Al-Kadaim said that when far-right thugs had moved into her neighbourhood waving Israeli flags two nights ago, officers stood by clapping.

These people come into the neighbourhood to dance as a provocation, she said, and the police were joining them.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/14/progressive-us-congress-members-speak-up-to-back-palestinians

Congress members slam US support for Israel

Several Democrats urge administration to take responsibility and defend the rights of the Palestinians, as others express full backing for Israel amid Gaza conflict.

Several Democratic members of the House of Representatives have spoken out against the United States military support for Israel and called for the protection of Palestinians rights, in contrast to other Democrats and Republicans who expressed their full support for Israel during the ongoing escalation in the Gaza Strip.

In an emotional speech on the House floor, Rashida Tlaib criticised President Joe Biden and other top officials for offering statements that she said did not acknowledge Palestinian humanity.

To read the statements from President [Joe] Biden, Secretary [of State Antony] Blinken, General [Lloyd] Austin and leaders of both parties, you would hardly know Palestinians existed at all, said Tlaib, the US Congresss only Palestinian-American member.

There has been no recognition of the attack on Palestinian families being ripped from their homes right now. No mention of children being detained or murdered. No recognition of a sustained campaign of harassment and terror by Israeli police against worshippers kneeling down and praying and celebrating the holiest days in one of their holiest places, no mention of Al-Aqsa being surrounded by violence, tear gas, smoke, while people pray.

Wearing a keffiyeh and at times trying to hold back her tears, Tlaib added: If our own State Department cant even bring itself to acknowledge the killing of Palestinian children is wrong, well, I will say it for the millions of Americans who stand with me against the killing of innocent children, no matter their ethnicity, or faith, she added.

Israel continued on Friday to bombard the Gaza Strip with air raids and artillery shells and amassed troops and tanks near the besieged Palestinian enclave.

At least 119 Palestinians, including 31 children, have been killed and more than 830 wounded since hostilities flared up on Monday. Rockets fired by Palestinian groups in the Strip have also killed seven people in Israel.

The US administration has expressed its sympathy for all casualties but did not single out any side or criticise Israel for disproportional use of force.

Biden said on Wednesday that Israel has a right to defend itself, while in his latest comments on Thursday he repeated a call for both sides to hold fire.

The question is how they get to a point where there is a significant reduction in the attacks, particularly the rocket attacks that are indiscriminately fired into population centres, he said.

Etho-nationalist Netanyahu

Speaking during the same House session, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar condemned Israels policies and attacks against Palestinians and branded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu an ethno-nationalist leader.

Consider that 78 percent of their [Palestinians] land was taken from them, Omar said, referring to the time passed since the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948.

Since then, 5.6 million Palestinians have been continually displaced from their homes in one of the largest among the lasting refugee crises in human history.

Omar also slammed Israels policy of establishing illegal settlements on Palestinian soil to displace Palestinians.

It is a conflict where one country, funded and supported by the United States government, continues an illegal military occupation over another group of people, she said.

Congresswoman Cori Bush, a prominent supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, paid tribute to Bassem Masri, a Palestinian American who backed the movement and died of a heart attack in 2018.

Palestinians know what state violence, militarised policing and occupation of their communities look like, and they live that reality of having to go through checkpoints while trying to live their lives, Bush said.

We are anti-war, we are anti-occupation, and we are anti-apartheid, she said, in addition to the several other members of the US Congress who took the floor to back Palestinian human rights.

During her speech, congresswoman Ayanna Pressley said: We cannot remain silent when our government sends $3.8bn of military aid to Israel that is used to demolish Palestinian homes, imprison Palestinian children, and displace Palestinian families. A budget is a reflection of our values.

For her part, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called on the Biden administration to acknowledge its role in the injustice and human rights violations suffered by Palestinians.

This is our business. Because we are playing a role in it, said the congresswoman, before adding: This is not about both sides. This is about an imbalance of power.

The president and many other figures this week stated that Israel has a right to self-defence and this is a sentiment that is echoed across this body, the congresswoman said. But do Palestinians have a right to survive? Do we believe that and if so, we have a responsibility to that as well.

Mark Pocan said his colleagues and himself stood up because no one should suffer the loss of life, liberty, or dignity that the Palestinian people have suffered.

He added: If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.
