READING v MIDDLESBROUGH, 3-2 Sat 19 Aug 2006
Reading opened their maiden Barclays Premiership season on a triumphant note when Leroy Lita completed a stunning comeback against Middlesbrough.

Boro looked to be on course to take a simple three points from last season's Championship winners when Stewart Downing and Aiyegbeni Yakubu grabbed a 2-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes.

England winger Downing looked particularly impressive after shaking off the dead leg he suffered in the midweek international against Greece.

But the scoreline flattered the Teessiders, who had goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to thank for their advantage, with Dave Kitson, Seol Ki-Hyeon and Kevin Doyle going close.

As the first half neared its conclusion Reading were in full control and were rewarded with two goals in as many minutes from Kitson and Steve Sidwell.

The salvo was no more than Reading deserved and they completed the fightback through substitute Lita, who had replaced the injured Kitson.

Australia frontman Mark Viduka thought he had snatched a point for the visitors with eight minutes to go, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Aside from the performances of Downing and Schwarzer, it was a deflating start to the managerial career of Gareth Southgate.

Reading, however, can look ahead with confidence as their introduction to the Barclays Premiership will continue with fixtures against Aston Villa, Wigan Athletic, Manchester City and Sheffield United.

Boro looked a classier outfit early on with Downing leading the charge with a rampaging run down the left.

But Reading were soon into the swing of things as Schwarzer displayed lightning reflexes to tip over a Seol free-kick and then deal with a Bobby Convey effort.

The Madejski Stadium crackled with expectation at Reading's start but home fans were soon brought back down to earth when Boro opened the scoring in the 11th minute.

George Boateng made the initial inroads through midfield before feeding Yakubu who picked out Downing at the far post with a precision cross the 22-year-old buried emphatically.

Sidwell blazed over as the lively Convey continued to get joy down the left but a mistake then saw Reading concede a second in the 21st minute.

James Harper hacked down Yakubu on the edge of the area and Fabio Rochemback managed to slip a low free-kick through the wall.

Marcus Hahnemann spilled the shot into the path of Yakubu, who gleefully prodded home from close range.

Reading refused to buckle, and their first Barclays Premiership goal nearly arrived through Doyle only for Schwarzer to save and Chris Riggott to get across to prevent Kitson converting the rebound.

Kitson should have scored in the 35th minute but his header from Graeme Murty抯 pinpoint free-kick was weak.

Murty then curled a free-kick inside the near post only to be denied by Schwarzer's fingertips.

Reading dominated the last 20 minutes of the first half and their endeavour was rewarded with two goals - both of which highlighted frailties in Boro's defence.

Seol supplied the first with a tricky run and cross that should have been cleared but was converted by Kitson as Schwarzer and his defenders dithered.

An unmarked Sidwell then smashed home after picking up a crafty pass from Ivar Ingimarsson, who had started in place of hamstring injury victim Glen Little.

Sidwell jumped into the stands to celebrate - earning a yellow card from referee Mark Halsey - before Kitson limped off seconds before the break.

Reading抯 unlikely victory became a reality in the 56th minute when Seol's intelligent running creating problems before he squared to Doyle and although he failed to scramble it home Lita capitalised as the ball emerged from a melee of defenders.

Rochemback was booked for an off-the-ball shoulder charge on Seol before Viduka was then denied his late equaliser when the flag went up.

Reading 3-2 Middlesbrough- Royals in maiden win

• Coppell plays down Royals performance

Rochemback was booked for an off-the-ball shoulder charge on Seol, before Viduka was then denied his late equaliser when the flag went up.

At the end of a memorable day, Coppell said it was too soon to judge the performance. 'What we need to do is evaluate it in the cold light of day rather than in the emotion of this moment,' he told Sky Sports News.

'It's been a long build up for us and a it's proud moment for the club, but we've earned our right to be here and whether we are dismissed by pundits or not it makes no difference.

'Today will be typical of what the Premiership will mean to the promoted clubs...we are fighting as hard as we can to be competitive in this division.'

The former England winger said he tried to encourage his players to settle after the early goals and accepted that the build-up had had a negative effect.

'It looked as if there was a massive gap between the two leagues after 20 minutes,' he said.

'We were just really anxious and jittery and that was a by-product of the build-up and how this game had been put to such an elevated position the players couldn't really express themselves properly.

'But at 2-0 down we just wanted them to play. We know where we are and what we want to do.'

The fixture list has been kind to Reading, who face Aston Villa, Wigan, Manchester City and Sheffield United in their next four games.

However, the following four are against Manchester United, West Ham United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

GOL TERPANTAS

Sheff Utd          1 - 2          Reading
Rob Hulse (61)                  Kevin Doyle (1)

                                 Seol Ki-Hyeon (25)

Doyle lightening strike

One of the fastest goals in Premier League history set Reading on their way to a first away win in the top flight as Sheffield United's early season woes continued with a 2-1 loss.

Manager Steve Coppell's side are now riding high in fifth - just behind Chelsea - thanks to Kevin Doyle's strike after 16 seconds, followed by Seol Ki-Hyeon's first for the club.

Although Rob Hulse pulled one back for United midway through the second half, the Blades have now failed to beat the Royals in the last eight meetings between the teams.

On the evidence of this display, with three wins from five games now, Reading appear a side more than capable of avoiding any kind of relegation drama.

• Coppell coy despite high position

As for the sorry Blades, a long season of struggle beckons unless manager Neil Warnock can somehow find a cure to his side's inadequacies - both in defence and up front.

Captain Chris Morgan is struggling because while he is a grafter, he was soundly beaten for pace for Doyle's quick-fire opener, and then left floundering when Seol added the second.

Unfortunately for Warnock, he has yet to field record £3million centre-back signing Claude Davis after his arrival from Preston over the summer due to a knee injury.

It is up front, though, where United's problems are most acute as they again struggled to create chances, with Hulse's reply a rare effort on target.

Warnock is clearly going to need all the help he can get from the new addition to his backroom staff this week in experienced coach Brian Kidd, who looked on from the dug-out, if United are to haul themselves out of the bottom three.

From the off, though, this was one of those days for Warnock as Reading were lightning fast out of the blocks.

Despite United kicking off, they lost possession when a long punt upfield from David Unsworth was safely cleared by the visitors.

Bobby Convey took up the play and his lofted through ball found Doyle, who initially held off Morgan before burying a 12-yard left -foot shot beyond debut goalkeeper Ian Bennett.

Signed from Leeds in the summer, and standing in for Paddy Kenny due to a groin injury, Bennett then made a crucial save in the seventh minute.

With the Royals pressing around the United penalty area, the ball eventually made its way to Seol, who unleashed a fierce right-foot shot that Bennett turned aside.

Bennett, though, was saved by his woodwork when was beaten by a James Harper right-foot drive that crashed off the right-hand post before United scrambled clear the rebound.

With United under pressure, a tight-angled shot from Leroy Lita deflected off Morgan and into the sidenetting soon after, leading to agitation from the Blades fans.

That turned to fury in the 25th minute when Seol broke his duck for the Royals following his #1.5million summer move from Wolves.

Nicky Shorey's forward ball found Lita with his back to goal, and he in turn fed Seol, who turned inside Morgan before beating Bennett with a low 20-yard shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann was barely troubled in the opening 45 minutes, and when the half-time whistle sounded there was an unsurprising chorus of boos from the home faithful.

If Lita had converted one of his two chances in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, then it is likely the furious United fans would have reacted even more strongly.

Lita flicked a right-wing cross across the face of goal in the 51st minute, that after the ball had earlier appeared to have clearly crossed the line for a United throw.

Then three minutes later Lita came closer still in rising unmarked to meet a right-wing free-kick from Convey from 10 yards, only for Bennett to produce a superb fingertip save.

After weathering another Reading storm, United then managed to haul themselves back into the game just after the hour, with Hulse ending the club's six-hour goal drought.

Chris Armstrong's left-wing cross was nodded on from Ade Akinbiyi into Hulse, who held off Ibrahima Sonko before delivering a firm right-foot shot from an improbable angle inside Hahnemann's near post.

The American finally made his first save of the game in the 86th minute - underlining United's lack of creativity - in pushing wide a 20-yard right-foot shot from substitute Keith Gillespie.

But despite four minutes of added-on time, United failed to conjure an equaliser, with more boos ringing out at the final whistle.

• Coppell coy despite high position

'Nobody is bothered at this stage, least of all us because there's still such a long way to go,' said Coppell. 'I have said it before in relation to clubs I have managed in the past, and that is that this division can wear you down.

'It's very easy to spiral out of it, but we are on our toes and thankful for the three points today.'

'We were wide-eyed at the start of the season and we are still wide-eyed at the moment because we are enjoying the challenge.

'This is an opportunity to play on the greatest stages against the world's best players - and I hope that is still the case at the end of the season.'

Coppell could not have asked for any more from his side during the opening hour of the game by which time United should have been dead and buried.

Hulse's strike gave the Blades a lifeline, but Coppell added: 'For the first 45 minutes we played terrifically well.

'But we knew there would be a Warnock-type reaction and after they'd scored we needed different qualities to get the three points.

'Overall, it was a very good display as we created a number of opportunities, but even towards the end of the first half we were taking our foot off the gas.

'At 2-0, that is a very dangerous scoreline but thankfully we managed to hold on and see the game out.'

This latest defeat leaves United still in the bottom three with just two points from five matches, with manager Neil Warnock knowing it will not get any easier from here on in.

With regard to the crowd's reaction Warnock replied: 'I'm not sure it was all about the team.

'I thought there were one or two other things they were unhappy with, but I won't go into detail about that.

'Obviously they were disappointed with the first 30 minutes, like I was.

'In the second half I felt they appreciated the lads were trying and not making elementary mistakes.

'But after conceding a goal so early on and then playing like we did for that first half hour, I think I would have booed if I had paid good money to come here.'
