South Korea look to Seol to clinch Cup spot

TOKYO, Oct 9 (Reuters) - South Korea will rely heavily on Reading forward Seol Ki-hyeon to help them clinch their spot in the 2007 Asian Cup in Wednesday's home qualifier with Syria.

Much of the responsibility is likely to fall on the in-form Seol due to the absense of several key players from the side that played at this year's World Cup in Germany.

The Koreans, beaten 3-1 in a friendly by Ghana in Seoul on Sunday, need only a point from their Group B game with Syria at the same venue to advance to the Asian Cup finals.

The 2002 World Cup semi-finalists have 10 points after four matches with Iran second in the group on eight.

Dutch coach Pim Verbeek is having to work without the services of Manchester United's Park Ji-sung and Tottenham Hotspur's Lee Young-pyo with ankle trouble, while forward Lee Chun-soo pulled out last week.

Goalkeeper Lee Woon-jae is also out injured and Verbeek has refused to call up World Cup striker Ahn Jung-hwan as he remains without a club after leaving Germany's Duisburg.

'It's true we have several players out and I might not get much support in attack but we should still be able to get a good result against Syria,' Seol told reporters.

'There's no extra pressure on me. We still have a lot of decent players in the side.'

Iran can secure their qualification with victory away to Taiwan with seven of the 16 places at next year's finals yet to be decided.

The remaining slots will be filled over the final two rounds of qualifying on Wednesday and Nov. 15.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam all qualify automatically as co-hosts while Group A sides Saudi Arabia and Japan, Group C leaders United Arab Emirates, Group D toppers Australia and Qatar in Group F have already joined them.

China can virtually secure qualification with victory over Palestine but the 2004 runners-up will miss playmaker Shao Jiayi and captain Li Weifeng, who are both suspended.

Iraq are level with China at the top of Group E with seven points and a win over Singapore could also see them clinch their place in the finals.

Both Palestine and Iraq have been playing their games on neutral soil due to security fears. Palestine will take on China in Amman while Iraq play in the Emirates.

Holders Japan travel to India looking to restore some pride after a 1-0 defeat at home to Ghana in a midweek friendly. Group A leaders Saudi Arabia are at home to Yemen.

Other Middle East sides still capable of qualifying are Syria, Palestine, Oman, Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain with Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Uzbekistan also mathematically alive.

Coppell is manager of the month

Coppell has lost only 34 of his 144 games in charge of Reading
Reading boss Steve Coppell has won the Barclays manager of the month award for September after his newly promoted side enjoyed a three-game unbeaten run.
The Royals collected seven points from a possible nine and are currently seventh in the league.

In September, Coppell guided his side to victories over Manchester City and Sheffield United before the 1-1 draw with Manchester United.

"This is a real surprise for me, I must admit," he told Radio Five Live.

"It is testimony to what everyone is doing at the club. I get the prize but it is everyone else who is doing all the work I can assure you.

"To win this so early in the season for a newly promoted side is a reward for all the hard work that has gone in during pre-season and the early part of this campaign.

"I wish it was April or May because it would have a bit more significance. The whole club can take pride in this."
