Epicenter was off Moluccas islands, official reports

Panties snipper strikes again

KUALA TERENGGANU: A pervert who breaks into homes to snip pieces of panties off sleeping teenagers has struck again.

His latest victims are two teenagers from Kampung Tanjung Jaafar in Gong Badak, near here.

Following the first scare two weeks ago, villagers had warned their daughters to wear track pants or slacks over their panties when going to bed and also to cover their body with a thick blanket to deter the hantu gunting.

However, this did not work as the culprit could deftly cut through the thick protection to reach the panty and slice out a piece from the groin area.

Since Aug 11, several teenage girls from Gong Badak, Pengkalan Arang, Taman Baiduri and Taman Desa Bakti have become victims of the ?anty snipper.?

From descriptions given by them, the culprit is short and has body odour.

Initially, the suspect was thought to be a ghoulish figure or someone who was getting snippets of panty for black magic. However, police suspect that he is just a perverted sex fiend.

Siti Aisha Rashid and Nurfiri Razali, both 15, told The Star that the culprit broke into their homes several days ago while they slept.

Siti said she was asleep in the hall when she sensed someone touching her thighs, causing her to wake up.

?e had cut my tracksuit and was trying to pull at my panty,? she said, adding that she kicked him on the chest and he fled through an open window.

? could not catch a glimpse of his face as it was wrapped in a towel. But he had bad body odour,? Siti said, adding that her fisherman father was at sea when the incident occurred.

She said a window had been forced open, and that she later found her cell phone missing.

Nurfiri, who lives next door, said she was fast asleep and did not realise that someone had cut her long pants and sliced off a piece of her panty until she woke up.

? must have been hypnotised,? she said, adding that she was shocked to find a hole in her thick blanket.

Molesting wives of colleagues: Soldier detained
Sandakan: A soldier was arrested for allegedly molesting wives of his colleagues at their quarters at the army base here recently.

The suspect, in his 30s, who is known to be a traditional healer (Bomoh), was picked up by police after the victims lodged police reports, said deputy district police chief, Supt Mohd Zain Yaacob.

Mohd Zain said the suspect told a couple that their house was haunted and he could help them to get rid of the spirit on the evening of Aug. 25.

He told the wife of his colleague that she was "possessed" and offered to cure her. He then allegedly molested her as he performed treatment on her in a room.

The suspect repeated his modus operandi the next day at the quarters of another woman, said Mohd Zain.

Meanwhile, police believe they have solved at least 32 cases involving cable thefts, robberies and snatch-thefts here with arrest of eight people recently.

The suspects, aged between 21 and 39, are being held for further investigations, adding police are now hot on the heels of 10 other suspects.

The cases solved involved robberies and snatch-thefts at Mile 2, Mile 4 and Pecky Valley in Jalan Utara and BDC, five cases in town and three at the downtown terminal.

The suspects were armed with knives and machetes when committing the crimes.

The figure also included at least 15 cases involving theft of cables and 120 chokes from Jalan Buli Sim Sim and Jalan Utara, Mohd Zain said.

He said the suspects were from four separate groups, adding police also recovered two mobile phones and several sacks of cables.

'Islamic nations among most corrupt'
29 August, 2006
Kuala Lumpur: Islamic nations are ranked as among the world's most-corrupt and the fight to tackle the scourge could be tough due to poverty and poor governance, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (pic) said, Monday.

Taking his anti-corruption message to the rest of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) nations, Abdullah, who chairs the group, said there were no quick fixes to completely eradicate the problem.

"I am deeply saddened to note that Muslim countries, as a group, do not rate very highly when it comes to perceptions of corruption," he said at the opening of the group's first forum on graft.

"I believe that many of the development challenges that the Muslim Ummah (community) faces have their roots in problems of poverty, poor governance and limited education opportunities," he said.

Citing Transparency International's 2005 report, he said the Muslim country with the best record could only rank 29th out of 158 countries surveyed.

"More than half of the bottom 10 places were occupied by Muslim countries," he said. Chad was ranked as the most corrupt.

"The current condition that Muslim countries find themselves is deeply alarming and distressing," he said. The 57-member OIC comprises 1.8 billion people, ranging from wealthy Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to poor African states such as Chad and Sudan.

Transparency International said the perception that Muslim nations were among the most corrupt had nothing to do with Islam.

"It's more to do with...the income level," David Nussbaum, Chief eExecutive of the Berlin-based group, told Reuters. "Some of the countries right at the bottom of the list are very poor."

Abdullah, who came to office in late 2003, convincingly won elections in 2004 after campaigning to clean up corruption and cronyism.

He has charged a Minister for land with corruption and dropped another Minister from Cabinet and his party for money politics, but critics say he could do more.

OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, in a prepared speech delivered at the forum, put the blame on unethical multinational firms doing business in Muslim countries.

"I also wish to identify the role of MNCs, who are responsible for spreading the curse of corruption," he said.- Reuters

Iran Plane Crash, 80 Killed

DUBAI, Sept 2 (Bernama) - At least 80 people were feared killed Friday when an Iranian airliner burst into flames after skidding off the runway when one of its tyre burst while landing in the north-eastern city of Mashhad.

The Russian-made Tupolev 154 jet, flying from Bandar Abbas port to Mashhad, was carrying 147 passengers, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Officials and state-run television said up to 60 people had been pulled out of the burning aircraft.

The Iran Air Tours plane skidded off the runway and crashed into barriers before bursting into flames at 2.40 pm local time.

PTI quoting local reports, that many people died of suffocation and that some of survivors were in a critical condition.

"As the plane was landing one of its tyres burst, forcing to it to swerve off the runway before hitting nearby barriers and bursting into flames," an airport official said.

"The pilots are trained to control the plane in such conditions so we have to find out what happened. There are three holes in the plane's fuselage," he said.

The crash at Mashhad, home to Iran's holiest shrine, was the latest tragedy to hit the country's aviation industry, whose fleet comprises Soviet or old Western planes.

The operations of the fleet have also been hit by sanctions imposed by the US after the revolution in 1979.

State television showed the plane lying flat without its wheels, with a large hole in the centre of its fuselage. Its cockpit was largely intact and officials said the crew had survived.

Rescue workers used hoses to douse the plane and several corpses were seen on the ground beside the plane.

Hisham warns gangs preying on students

By NIK NAIZI HUSIN

JERANTUT: Gangs that target students as potential recruits have received a warning.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said his ministry had identified these groups of gangsters and had been working closely with the police to monitor their activities.

He warned those targeting students that the ministry and the police would not compromise on the matter and would hunt them down to ?he end of the earth.?

?angan main-main dengan saya (Don? fool around with me),? he said after launching the Addressing Student Disciplinary Problems campaign here yesterday.

According to Hishammuddin, gang members would hang around at places like cyber cafes to get close to students before moving in to recruit them.

?heir activities will destroy our culture. I'll make sure they will not have the chance to do so, to spoil our students, our younger generation,? he said.

Parents and the community, he added, also had to play their roles and be alert in monitoring the activities of students.

?hey should not just depend on the police or others,? he said.

Also present were Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan and Deputy Education Ministers Datuk Hon Choon Kim and Datuk Noh Omar.

Earlier, Hishammuddin said the abolishing of fees for public examinations at all Government schools from next year should not be seen as loss of revenue for the Government.

The move under Budget 2007, he noted, had been made to reduce the financial burden of parents with children sitting for examinations.

?t is for the benefit of the rakyat,? he told reporters.
