Mejia, Pichrtova tawan Kinabalu

Mius hampir mencatat sejarah kalau bukan kerana kecederaan lutut.

Milesova dijangka menjadi pesaing utama Anna tahun depan jika kembali beraksi.

Mudge bagaimanapun tetap pulang dengan gembira apabila diumumkan pemenang kategori wanita Buff Skyrunners World Series FSA 2006.

Mount Kinabalu, more than a walk uphill
By Sager Ahmad

CLIMBING Mount Kinabalu may seem like no-big-deal these days but it is no
stroll in the park either. Actually, some preparations are needed. While
climbing up is one thing, the descend can be even more taxing.
CLIMBING Mount Kinabalu may seem like no-big-deal these days but it is no

stroll in the park either. Actually, some preparations are needed. While

climbing up is one thing, the descend can be even more taxing.

Bearing that in mind, climbing Mount Kinabalu is within reach for all

able-bodied people as it is not "really full-fledged mountain climbing."

Climbers are "assisted" by steps hewn from rocks and ropes placed at

strategic points.

Hence some 30,000 people annually are able to scale Southeast Asia's

highest peak at 4,101m (13,455 ft).

Some of the more adventurous take part in the Kinabalu International

Climbaton held every September. Participants run up and down the mountain

and the present record is one hour and 50 minutes.

To embark on a Kinabalu climb, first register at the Park headquarters

and it is advisable to take a porter and guide to reach the summit.

Recently, a charity climb was organised by the Malaysian Mining

Corporation Sports Club. About 70 people were involve in the charity

drive.

After staying for two days at the State-owned Perkasa Hotel in

Kundasang, the group took a 10-minute bus ride from Kinabalu Park to the

starting point at Timpohon Gate, about 1,900 metres above sea level.

Doing charity and fulfilling a personal quest was the theme of the

climb. Of the MMC group, all except 10 managed to scale the highest point.

From Timpohon Gate, the distance covered to Laban Rata at 3,333m (11,000

ft) was about six km and most reached it after four to five hours. Those

who arrived much later chose to admire the scenery and vegetation more

closely but there were also a few who found they were not fit enough and

had to be assisted by runners and porters.

There were the usual encounters with those descending and there was a

good mix of locals and foreigners.

Laban Rata is almost like home. There is a TV set, heater, and cafeteria

serving hot food. There is pay phone too!

The material for building the houses on Laban Rata was transported using

Nuri helicopters courtesy of the Royal Malaysian Air Force in the 80s and

the job was completed in just one week.

Laban Rata food prices are slightly expensive but they are to be

expected when you consider the food ingredients and cooking gas have to be

transported on foot by porters.

The final assault on the summit, called Low's Peak, named after Sir Hugh

Low, started at an unearthly hour of 2am. Most were unsure who woke them

up but soon the noise generated by others woke everyone else.

The distance to be covered is only 2.7 km and armed with proper warm

clothes, gloves, torchlights and guides, the group made slow but sure

progress before sunrise.

The spectacular view and the brilliant sunrise makes the hard climb

worthwhile.

Regular climber Wan Abdul Rahman Wan Abdullah, IT lecturer at the Maktab

Perguruan Tuaran, said one must not only make the proper physical

preparation months in advance but also carry enough rations.

He suggested rations like raisins, dates and chocolate while not

forgetting all the necessary balm and rubbing oils that would come in

handy to ward away the numbing cold.

Ibrahim's personal feat is trotting all the way down taking one hour and

50 minutes to reach the power station, the starting point.

Kol (Rtd) Andrew Kong from MMC Defence, the company's subsidiary in

Nilai, Ngeri Sembilan, was the oldest member of the expedition to reach

the summit.

For more information on climbing Mount Kinabalu, call Wan Abdul Rahman

Lumpur; Tel: 03-21416211, fax 21484618, e-mail gtccorp@tm.net.my or visit

Records show Sir Hugh Low was the first to ascend Mount Kinabalu in

1851. He took a 15-day round trip from Tuaran. The summit was named after

him. With the creation of Kinabalu National Park 1964 and the completion

of Ranau Highway in 1982, climbing the mountain became increasingly

popular. By 1987 more than 15,000 people climbed the mountain annually.

Due to its height at 4,101m, Mount Kinabalu experiences a range of

climates and different habitats between base and summit. It is a paradise

for botanists and amature naturalists. To locals the mountain is a sacred

resting place. The name Kinabalu is derived from a Kadazan-Dusun word

akina-balu meaning the place where the departed spirit has gone. GETTING THERE

Kota Kinabalu is the modern gateway to the rest of Sabah. Major airlines

operate direct flights into KK daily. From the city, visitors can rent a

car or use public transportation like the bus, train or taxi. However, if

you do not want the hassle, just walk in to any travel agent and join day

Permandangan dari atas gunung kinabalu memang cantik..

kenangan semasa mendaki g. kinabalu

6. time petang, kita berada di atas awan, cantik
7. malam sejuk banget, langit bersih dan clear
8. first time tengok sunrise
9. dan banyak lagi............oh ya..harga maggie kari kosong di restoren masa tu (1995)  RM3.00, sekarang tak pasti..

teringin nak daki semula tapi tak tau bila nak pegi lagi..
