League One - Round-up: Beckford sends Leeds up
Eurosport - Sat, 08 May 16:57:00 2010

Ten-man Leeds came from a goal down to beat Bristol Rovers 2-1 at Elland Road and secure automatic promotion on a dramatic final day of the League One season.

Leeds were reduced to 10 men in the first half when Max Gradel was dismissed for an off-the-ball stamp on Daniel Jones and they fell behind to Daryl Duffy's close range effort just after the break.

But quick-fire goals from Jonathan Howson and Jermaine Beckford turned the match on its head and despite some late scares Leeds held on to end their three-year stay in the division.

Simon Grayson's side go up at the expense of Millwall and Swindon, who met at the New Den where the hosts ran out 3-2 winners.

Swindon took a third-minute lead through Daniel Ward before Steve Morrison equalised from the penalty spot. A Gordon Greer own-goal and Morrison's second of the day put Millwall 3-1 up before Billy Paynter netted a late consolation for Swindon.

Charlton, who at one point during the course of the afternoon found themselves in the automatic promotion spot, beat Oldham 2-0 at Boundary Park thanks to goals by Nicky Bailey and Miguel Angel Llera, but the result at Elland Road rendered their victory insignificant.

The Addicks, Millwall and Swindon will contest the play-offs.

Joining them there will be Huddersfield, despite a 2-1 defeat at Exeter, who secured their League One status at the expense of Gillingham.

Matt Taylor and Ryan Harley were on target for Exeter after Gary Roberts had given the Yorkshire side an early lead at St James' Park.

Gillingham's fate was sealed by a 3-0 defeat to Wycombe, with Matt Phillips, Alan Bennett and Kevin Betsy on target.

The results meant Tranmere and Hartlepool also secured their safety.

Tranmere beat Stockport 3-0 at Edgely Park thanks to goals by Ian Goodison, Ian Thomas-Moore and Joss Labadie, while Hartlepool played out a nervy goalless draw at Brentford.

Champions Norwich ended their season with a surprise 2-0 reverse against Carlisle, Gary Madine and Jason Price on the scoresheet for the visitors to Carrow Road.

In other games, Brighton edged Yeovil 1-0 thanks to Elliot Bennett's goal, Colchester beat Leyton Orient 1-0, Kevin Lisbie on the scoresheet, and Southampton saw off Southend 3-1, Rickie Lambert grabbing two and Adam Lallana the other.

Rounding off the day's action, Matthew Richards and Emmanuele Smith struck in Walsall's 2-1 victory over Milton Keynes Dons.
