LOSC Lille Metropole's appeal against the validity of United's 1-0 Champions League victory has been rejected by UEFA.

The French club claimed that Ryan Giggs' goal in the last 16 first leg tie should not have stood. They believe that referee Eric Braamhaar made a technical error by not blowing his whistle before the free-kick had been taken and, therefore, were requesting that the match be replayed.

Their initial protest was vetoed by the Control and Disciplinary Body, but Les Dogues officials appealed against the ruling.

However, on Friday afternoon UEFA's Appeals Body backed the original decision. A statement on their website confirmed "that there was no proof of a technical error".

UEFA are due to meet on 22 March to discuss a number of issues that arose after the first leg tie at Stade Felix-Bollaert, including the reaction to Giggs' goal by the Lille players, though the Ligue 1 side have strenuously denied that they were contemplating an unprecedented walk-off.

The meeting will also include discussions about the possible violation of safety and security provisions by the host club, and the alleged improper conduct of both sets of supporters.

The teams meet in the second leg on Wednesday at Old Trafford with United well placed but by no means guaranteed to reach the last eight.

Bodmer, Cabaye out of Lille tie at Man United

LILLE, March 5 (Reuters) - Lille midfielders Mathieu Bodmer and Laurent Cabaye have been ruled out of Wednesday's Champions League first-round second-leg tie at Manchester United.

Claude Puel, coach of the French club, told journalists on Monday that playmaker Bodmer was still suffering from an ankle injury and Laurent Cabaye had not recovered from a stomach muscle tear.

'Both are out of the game,' he said.
Lille lost the first leg 1-0 in Lens in a match marred by crowd trouble and controversy.
Lille complained to UEFA that Ryan Giggs's goal should be disallowed because it was taken while their players were still preparing for the free kick but their appeal was turned down.

'Anything is possible in Manchester'

If there is a man who could derail Manchester United's Champions League dreams on Wednesday night, it may just be Abdul Kader Keita.

Absent from the controversial first leg of the last-16 tie in Lens due to suspension, the Ivory Coast international is undoubtedly Lille's talisman and if there is to be the shock of all shocks at Old Trafford, this gifted midfielder needs to prove he is as good as his reputation.

With a fine range of passing and a keen eye for goal, it's no surprise the likes of Liverpool, AC Milan and even Manchester United themselves are being linked with a move for the star nick-named 'Popito', and he seems to be revelling in his status as a potential match winner on one of the game's greatest stages.

'It would be disrespectful to my team-mates to suggest Lille is a much better team just because I'm back, but people have said this and my task now is to prove them right,' he begins.

'I watch the Premiership all the time and when you hear that clubs like United and Liverpool are interested in signing you, there can only be pride. Maybe this move will happen one day and playing on a massive stage like Old Trafford gives us all a chance to show we are not just average players.

'We know that anything is possible in Manchester and victory can be ours. When you look at the first leg, we matched United for long periods, especially in the second half and they only managed to score with a goal by breaking the spirit of the game, even if it didn't break the rules.'

Puel slams 'violent' United fans

Lille coach Claude Puel has accused Manchester United fans of triggering trouble between the two clubs and labelled travelling Reds 'violent'.

"It is a paradox to criticise Lille," said Puel.

"Manchester United's own fans were violent and in possession of counterfeit tickets. The facts are there for everyone to see, so it is difficult to see why it is Lille's fault.

"Since the first match, we have heard a lot of things from the Manchester United side. But the situation has been created by them (United)."

"You could say we weren't au fait with the rules that give us 24 hours to make a complaint. In France those rules are different."

Ferguson does not believe Lille's intention was merely to register an immediate protest rather than seek to have the game abandoned completely.

Yet Puel feels the United manager has shown a total lack of respect for both himself and Lille, and is probably still nursing a grievance at the French club's part in the Red Devils humiliating exit from the group phase of last season's competition.

Yet Puel insists he is not embarrassed by his side's conduct, which has drawn such fierce criticism from Ferguson.

"I am not embarrassed at all," he said.
