FEATURE ARTICLE, Definitions and Fixes

Topped shots.

Topped shots are caused by hitting the ball above its equator. Tee
your drives so that one-half of the ball is visible above the
clubhead.

Tee the ball inside the left heel.

Stand more upright if you find yourself crouching too much at
address. Too much crouch in the set up will cause you to compensate
by jerking your head up on the downswing and topping the shot.

Trying to 'overpower' the shot sometimes causes the head to lift at
impact. Center the swing around your head and concentrate on a
smooth, relaxed swing.

Fat Shots.

Let's make things simple: if you're hitting fat shots, your swing
is bottoming out too early. The golf swing is essentially U-shaped
and the bottom of your U is occurring before the ball, causing you
to hit the ground first.

You're chunking it. Chili-dipping it. Laying the sod over it.
Hitting the big ball before the little ball. (The big ball is
Mother Earth, by the way.)

Tour pros' swings are exactly the opposite. Their swings bottom out
after the ball. They hit the ball first as the clubhead is
descending, then take a shallow divot.

Here's a drill to help you do the same: on the practice tee, put a
tee in the ground an inch or an inch and a half in front of the
ball.

Sink it into the ground about as deeply as you would if you were
teeing up a 4-iron on a long par 3.

When you swing, your goal is to hit the ball and knock
the tee out of the ground. With some practice, you'll soon be
hitting the ball first and then taking a shallow divot. You'll
strike the ball much more crisply and solidly, and notice dramatic
improvements in both distance and accuracy.

To cure yourself of fat shots place a tee in the ground an inch or
so in front of your ball.

Try to hit the ball and then knock the tee out of the ground. This
will move the bottom of your swing forward-and reduce the
likelihood of hitting a fat shot

Skying the Ball.

The 'pop fly' of golf. The 'skied' shot flies high into the air
because the clubhead contacts the ball's center.

Skied drives are often caused by teeing the ball too high. Correct
by teeing so that one-half of the ball is visible above the clubhead.

Start back 'low and slow' with good extension away from the ball.
Center the swing around the head. Avoid lifting the head and
chopping down on the ball. Point your chin at the ball.

With skied short irons, check your grip. Try strengthening your
grip a bit by rotating your hands 'clockwise'. Move your hands
ahead of the ball in the setup and lead with your hands through the
impact zone.

Position the ball more to the center of your stance, 2" to 3"
inside your left heel.

----------------HOT TIP------------------*

How far should you stand from the ball?   Take your regular left
hand grip.  Hold the club straight out.  Slowly lower to the
ground.  There you go.  Set up to shoot.  You should have no more
than a fist and a half between the end of the club and your body.

Feel uncomfortable?  GOOD!!  You know it must be right.

*-----------------HOT TIP------------------*

>From our Readers:  Delmar Yennie

I live in the north. Minnesota in fact. My tip has to do with
feeling how much your grip can be loose and still hit
the ball a long way. I still have trouble breaking an old habit of
a very tight grip.

I used a very deep snow bank in the winter time. Just keep
loosening your grip and swing into the snow bank or sand.  You will
be very surprised at how loose it can be, because the force of the
swing moves
the snow or sand.

You need a loose grip and wrists and forearms so you can
speed up your swing without really trying.

Thanks Delmar.

We have received a lot of great tips and will be building a special
reader tip section on our web site.  Watch for it.

Jack Nicklaus in "Golf My Way" says: "If you're missing the short
ones (putts) select a specific spot two or three inches in front of
the hole and try to make the ball run over it. I think such a tiny
target is more specific than the four and a quarter inch hole
itself and thus forces you to line up and stroke more precisely."

Free Golf Tip Number 4 of 52:  Tips for Bunker Play

IN THIS ISSUE

Bunkers - How to Play Them

Fairway Bunkers

The fairway bunker shot can be an intimidating shot for many inexperienced golfers. For starters, when playing out of fairway bunkers, it is wise to take one to two clubs more than normal. Begin by setting up normally, with your feet slightly dug in for stability and the ball positioned more toward the middle of your stance. Next, grip down slightly on the club for greater control.

Right before you begin your backswing, lift your chin off your chest. That raises your center of gravity and increases your ability to hit the ball first, which is crucial in executing the shot. Swing at 70 percent of your normal speed and there's a good bet you'll hit a clean, solid shot.

So, Hitting a shot from a fairway bunker poses no great problem if the ball has a good lie. (Well, I am really just trying to build your confidence.  I could say, you are in a bunker, you're score just went up three strokes!!!)

Long or middle irons as well as 3, 4, and 5 woods can be used with confidence in this situation.
Take a open stance, wider than normal. Work your feet into the sand for better balance. Play the ball back 1" to 2" to assure that the club hits the ball before the sand.

Choke down on the shaft.
Close your eyes (just kidding)

>From an open stance, aim slightly to the left.
Swing Normal Speed
Pray.

On long fairway bunker shots, try a 5 wood in preference to a long iron. Don't try to overpower this shot. Restrict your body turn and swing easy.

Now, if it is a BAD lie, then you need to play the course.  Grab your club you are confident with, between a 7 and SW.  Observe the course.  Realize that you are not Tiger Woods.  Realize the average golfer will clunk it out about 75 yards.  Aim for a safe fairway shot to get you back into play.  Shoot for the MIDDLE of the fairway, not left or right, 75 yards 'down bunker'.

Most importantly, follow through on your swing.  Most weekend golfers, whether near the green or in a fairway bunker, STOP their swing on impact.  Golf is simple.  You ALWAYS need to follow through.  Again, swing easy and follow through.

=========================================

Greenside Bunkers

The most common mistake weekend players make in the greenside bunker is allowing their lower bodies to get too active. If you shift your weight or make a turn with your lower body, your swing's shape and impact position will never be the same from one swing to the next--you'll never know whether you'll leave the ball in the bunker or skull one 35 yards across the green.

Proper bunker technique requires that you place your weight forward--and leave it there throughout the swing. Here's a great drill to engrain this feeling. Go to a practice bunker and hit 25 bunker shots with your right (for right-handed golfers) heel in the air--only your right toes should be dug into the sand for balance. This will position the majority of your weight forward to begin your swing. If you try to shift your weight back to your right side as you play the shot, you'll feel the pressure in your right toes and you'll have to fight to keep your right heel from lowering into the sand. It might feel as though you're actually shifting your weight forward in a reverse pivot, but you're not--you're just not used to the feel of the proper bunker technique.

As you learn to keep your weight forward and quiet your lower body on these greenside bunker shots, you'll begin to notice the ball flying the same distance and on the same trajectory again and again. Once this happens, you'll start to develop some touch and begin to think about not only getting the ball out, but also about getting it close.

Poor bunker players have a far-too-active lower body. If you make a turn or weight shift, your swing's shape and the club's impact position will change from swing-with inconsistent results.

To quiet your lower body bring consistency to your greenside bunker game, practice hitting sand shots with your right heel raised. Your swing's shape and club's impact position will be the same-shot after shot.
When you are in a greenside bunker, and you need to get out (like you would need to stay in??), the most common mistake made is taking a half swing, and not following through.

Try this:  Pretend the ball is lying on a pancake, or sprinkler head.  You want to aim FOR THE FRONT EDGE of the 'pancake' that the ball is lying on.  DO NOT stop your swing upon contact.  FOLLOW THROUGH to get the ball out.

By hitting the sand first, and hitting through the ball, you will not 'skull' it.  The ball will pop up gently, with the sand, and roll right into the cup (ok, but it will be much closer).  Do you watch pro's, or other good golfers?  Wonder why they 'take so much sand' with them?  Now you know!  Remember, don't hit the ball, hit the front edge of the pancake, and follow through.

Let your backswing determine the distance you need to go, not your follow through!

And always count to one one thousand before you lift your head.  That will insure that you KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN!!

=========================================

In "The Killer Swing" by John Daly, he says "Pull down pretty firmly with the last three fingers of your left hand, then try to follow an image of slicing a cut of sand from under the ball.  This will help keep the clubface open at impact, so that you get greater loft and cut spin on the shot.

Free Golf Tip Number 21 of 52: Golf is Actually Played Inside Your Head.

IN THIS ISSUE
=========================================

- Feature Article - Thinking.
- Product Review - The Golf Card - Save Money.

=========================================

Focus is keeping the mind in the here and now and dealing with
those things we are in control of. When we speculate about the
future we begin to play a dangerous game. There are many things
about the future that are uncertain and out of our control. On the
other hand, the outcome of past events is known, but they are
unalterable.

In golf, it is ideal to learn to narrow focus for
shot-making and widen focus for between shot time. This is
important so that you can learn to concentrate in golf; not for the
entire 5 hour round, but for 40 seconds, 60 + times, and still
sustain mental energy for the entire round. Our individual
personality will dictate width of focus between shots and it is
important to stay true to our own style. Some of us are better with
a more internal focus between shots (self-talk, daydreaming, small
talk with another player) and some of us are better with a broader
focus (outgoing, joking, lots of talking).

Concentration is really the partner of focusing. It does not mean
"trying hard". It is using our mind to maximize abilities to
achieve the highest degree of success.

Mental preparation begins
with a "mental diet" of positive teaching, and an "empty" mind,
perhaps by using a mantra to achieve this quiet state of mind. A
consistent ritual like a solid mental routine can help reassure and
relax, emptying the mind to let the body do what it has done
thousands of times before in practice.

Imagine when you are playing golf that you are wearing blinders. As
you approach the first tee and each subsequent shot, narrow your
blinders to focus only on execution.

The blinders should shut out
both internal and external distractions. After execution, widen the
blinders to sustain energy. Repeat this over and over for the
duration of the event.

THE MENTAL ROUTINE (narrow the blinders)

Calculations
*left brain thinking here
*decide type of shot, club, etc..
*decide with as little vacillation as possible and commit fully
*end analysis and begin next step

Visualization
*right brain thinking here
*from behind the shot, visualize the flight of the ball to the target
*visualize this shot as clearly as possible

Feel
*consciously try to feel the exact swing that you have committed to use
*imagery or physical practice swing is acceptable and individual

*HIT THE SHOT

More Greens...Less Fees - Get Golf Card!

BETWEEN GOLF SHOTS (widen the blinders)

Allowed Thoughts
*self compliments
*visual replay of good shots
*small talk
*study wildlife, landscapes, clouds and birds
*daydreams of favorite places
*humming a favorite tune
*walking with composure and confidence
*deep breathing

Not Allowed Thoughts
*mechanics
*looking ahead or looking behind
*score, cut, position, birdies, bogies
*what others think of you
*what others expect of you
*negative self talk
*what ifs
*how other players are doing
*replaying bad shots and experiences

Focus and concentration are constant challenges. Work in this
important area is rewarding. Once we have mastered the mechanics of
the various golf shots we will be performing out on the golf course
(through conceptual understanding, repetition, habituation), adopt
a generally positive outlook that is free of self defeating
negative thoughts.

Next, develop a way to control thoughts by achieving a state of focus and concentration. Never let the mind
wander away where it might find something in the past or future that will suddenly flash onto the screen of the mind. If this
happens, it creates tension in the body. Instead, keep your mind in the here and now by repeating your mantra.

Do the physical and mental routine rituals and let your body take over. The ball will
go where you want it to go. Trust this.
