Simulated wind tunnel for skydiving enthusiasts on Sentosa

By Hong Xinyi

WE NOW have the Singapore Flyer. Coming up next: iFly Singapore.

Thrill seekers can look forward to a $16 million vertical wind tunnel that simulates a skydive, which is expected to open near Sentosa's Siloso Beach next year.

Construction on the 17m tall attraction, called the iFly Singapore, is scheduled to begin later this year and be ready by 2009, said officials from Sentosa on Thursday.

It will be managed by Mr Lawrence Koh, 32, a former officer commanding for the Singapore Armed Forces' Parachuting School.

Mr Koh, who expects the wind tunnel to attract about 300,000 visitors a year, said: 'Many people think of skydiving as risky, but in this controlled environment there is no risk.

'Anyone can do it, starting from the age of three. No prior experience is needed.'

The iFly will be the second in Asia, after the one in Genting Highlands, Malaysia.

A trip will cost about $40 - which is about 10 times cheaper than an actual skydiving experience, said Mr Koh, who promises that it will be no less thrilling.

'You will feel the same adrenaline rush,' he said.

Mr Goh Lye Whatt, director of Sentosa Leisure Group's property division, said on Thursday that it is one of several new attractions in the pipeline.

At least one new major attraction will be unveiled every year from now till 2011, he added.

Sentosa's Underwater World launches new submersible explorer
By Hiroshi Limmell, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 21 May 2008 1714 hrs

SINGAPORE : Singapore's Underwater World has launched its new exhibit - Ocean Invaders - which gives the public a chance to learn about marine life without getting wet.

The remote-operated vehicle (ROV), which weighs less than 4 kilogrammes, is used by scientists for filming and exploration in dangerous waters, and it comes equipped with a camera, lights and even a sonar for search and rescue missions.

But at the oceanarium, visitors can explore the living reefs and get a better view of the fish, with the help of a huge television screen.

One child commented, "You can move the submersible around and chase after the fish."

Another said, "I can go near the fish and see how it looks like."

Dr Jeffrey Mahon, Curatorial Director, Underwater World, said, "This ROV exhibit - which is the first in Asia - allows you to get up close and personal with the fish in our aquarium, and hopefully, it will inspire children here to do more ocean exploration in the future."

The device costs US$8,000. The oceanarium believes it is a worthwhile investment to get children interested in learning more about marine life. - CNA/ms

1.3 km road tunnel to link Sentosa to Keppel Road

By Maria Almenoar

A NEW 1.3km tunnel will be built from the Sentosa Gateway as a link to nearby roads to cope with growing traffic in the area when the integrated resort and new condominiums are completed.

This will allow outgoing traffic from Sentosa to bypass the busy cross junction of the Gateway and Telok Blangah Road.

That junction is expected to see a 60 per cent increase in traffic between 2010 and 2015 - arising mainly from the new integrated resort on Sentosa and new condominiums in the area.

Currently, about 6,000 cars use that junction during the evening peak period. That number will swell to between 9,600 and 10,800, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Friday.

When the tunnel is completed in 2015, it will start along the stretch directly between VivoCity and St. James Power Station and end along Kampong Bahru Road and Keppel Road heading east.

The LTA said that motorists who use the mainly two-lane tunnel will see a 50 per cent drop in their travel time - to under 10 minutes - for that stretch.

Travel time on surface level will also improve by 25 per cent.

The tunnel is in addition to other road works in the area which have begun since June to meet growing traffic demands.

Improvements include adding lanes on Telok Blangah Road, an extra lane for vehicles turning into the Sentosa Gateway and the widening of the Kampong Bahru Road.

These works will be completed in 2010, in time for the opening of the integrated resort on Sentosa.

LTA will start preliminary works on the tunnel, which includes laying cables, at the Sentosa Gateway area, by the end of the year.

Tunnel works proper will only begin in 2011.

LTA assured motorists that there will be minimal disruption to those heading to the area.

Cable car service on Sentosa

By Lim Wei Chean

ZIPPING around Sentosa Island will be made easier from 2011 with the launch of a new cable car service.

The new transport link may replace the present free intra-island bus service.

The above-ground system is part of Sentosa Leisure Group's (SLG) over $250 million plan to overhaul the transport system on the island to ensure that it can handle the crowds when Resorts World at Sentosa opens next year.

Currently, Sentosa receives up to 30,000 visitors daily during the peak season. But that number is expected to rise to over 100,000 people daily with the opening of Singapore's second integrated resort.

Mr Lee Chin Chuan, director of SLG's property business development, said the cable car system will offer a greener way of travel compared to the current diesel-powered bus fleet.

The new cableway system will be at most six to seven storeys tall, a third of the height of the current cable car system which runs from Mount Faber.

It is expected to take anything from 1,400 to 5,000 passengers per hour in one direction, moving at speeds of 4m to 6m a second. It will also offer express waiting times of 12 seconds to 15 seconds instead of two minutes to three minutes for the monorail and 10 minutes to 15 minutes for the bus.

Currently, four stations have been earmarked. Mr Lee did not discount the possibility of rolling out the system to the rest of the island or even to the mainland.

The cost of the project is not known yet. SLG has hired consultants to help determine the system's capacity and cost.

One other unknown: whether visitors will be charged for rides. SLG is still mulling over this. The group is also exploring other possibilities like electric trams, mini railways and buggies. Plans to boost links to the island include an $80 million, 710m-long second bridge, being built by the casino-resort and expected to be ready by the third quarter of this year.
