Uruguay Stunned By Peru In Copa America Opener

Uruguay 0-3 Peru

Paolo Guerrero put in a man of the match display as Peru stunned Uruguay in the Copa America opener.

Claudio Pizarro, Paolo Guerrero and Jefferson Farfan put in impressive displays for the Peruvians, as they warded of spells of dominance from Uruguay, and picked up an absolutely massive win.

First Half

Guerrero and Pizarro both had early chances as Peru started the stronger of the two teams, even if only just.

They took the lead, perhaps deservedly so, when defender Miguel Angel Villalta rose highest to head in a superb free-kick from Farfan in the 26th minute.

They should have gone 2-0 up (and actually did) when Guerrero crashed a rebound into the net after Pizarro had forced a block out of Fabian Carini. However, a rather poor piece of officiating saw the new Chelsea striker flagged offside when he was at least a yard on.

Farfan was looking impressive playing in a roaming role, while Claudio Pizarro was running into dangerous areas every time he had the ball. Guerrerro was also all over the pitch, using his physique against the Uruguayan

That slice of luck proved to shake the Celeste into action, and though efforts on goal were still few and far between, the likes of Diego Forlan and Fabian Estoyanoff, who had started in place of Recoba, were beginning to come into the game.

Estoyanoff came up with Uruguay抯 first real chance a minute before the break, when he let rip a wildly swerving shot from all of 40 yards, one which Butron only just managed to tip over.

Second Half

Uruguay started the second half very strong, with substitute Christian Rodriguez almost bringing them back level in the 47th minute with an over-head kick. However, Butron again produced a good save to keep Peru in the lead.

Farfan came close with a free-kick at the other end, as the game went from one end to another. Next, it was Guerrero who sent a stinging cross-cum-shot across the face of goal, and Pizarro almost tucked it in at the far post. Almost!

Uruguay then began piling the pressure through Rodriguez and Forlan, but Peru were looking dangerous on the break. The game was being played at a break-neck pace, and it was only a matter of time before one the two teams would give.

Unfortunately for the Group A favourites, it was Peru who got their second, through what will be one of the goals of the tournament. Number 10 Juan Carlos Marino, who had come on for Pedro Garcia, fired a stinging volley from the right corner of the box, into the top of the near post.

It gave Peru just the cushion they needed, and they looked to control the game thereafter. Farfan came off to a rousing ovation as they looked to shut shop, but they were not quite done scoring.

Uruguay were going for broke, and that left Guerrero free on a break, and the striker brushed off attention to get himself a deserving goal, and in the process, record Peru's biggest win over Uruguay ever.

The result sees Peru installed as new Group A favourites. Uruguay, 14-times Copa America winners, meanwhile, have plenty of work to do before they can qualify for the quarter-finals.
